hbomb #1 Posted August 18, 2006 Well, I finally was able to find a pair of CX10 joysticks so that my Atari hex disc has a home! Unfortunately, one out of the two joysticks does not work properly. The joystick will play in one direction, but the other directions and the fire button are not working. I did a search on the forum and saw the post about cleaning and repairing your joystick, but I'm still not sure what needs to be done. Can the parts of the CX40 joysticks be substituted for the CX10? I didn't want to waste money by buying the wrong parts. Any ideas? Thanks!

You can bend them back into shape or use your cx-40 ones. What I mean by the stick being cracked is the white joystick shaft has a white circle at the bottom of the plastic that hits the contacts on the board of the joystick and sometimes they are known to crack or bend to the point of poor contact. Worste case buy one of those 10 dollar joystick repair kits off ebay and make your Hex one all nice and new. Hell for a controller that is now worth $75+ I think another 10 bucks is a good investment Edited August 18, 2006 by Shawn Sr.
CPUWIZ #3 Posted August 18, 2006 The ebay kits won't work (neither do the CX-40 boards), luckily I have a few proper replacement boards for CX-10's in stock.
the 5th ghost #4 Posted August 18, 2006 CPUWIZ is right, the CX-40 parts are not compatible. More than likely, your stick is fine, just needs adjustment. SOmetimes stretching the springs will allow better contact, sometimes loosening the bottom screws will help too. But take it apart and manually depress each of the boards contacts just to see if they still work. If not, then check the colored wires to see if any of them have broken contacts. If they still don't work, contact CPUWIZ Hey CPUWIZ, do you have any replacement CX-10 boots?

I'll be taking it apart tomorrow night and let you know if I'm going to need any replacement parts.

Not the board just the contact dome things. Heck the CX-40 board isn't even layed out the same as the CX-10 IIRC. I'm dumb but not that dumb

I'm dumb but not that dumb It just depends on what type of contacts his board has. Some are domes, the others are rectangular. I don't know if those are swappable or not. Are all the boards in that photo CX-10 boards? Yes. I took pix of the fronts and backs of the three different boards. The two green ones with the Atari logo are Rev 4 and Rev 5 boards. The brown one says Santo 88 All came from original CX-10 sticks, and for me, are the only variations I've come across to date. If I were to guess, the green ones represent the earliest versions that would have come with the 1977 units, the Santo 88 boards came later with the early 1978 heavy sixers, before the transition to the light sixer and CX-40 sticks. Thanks for the info. The board in my CX-10 looks a little different, I'm trying to figure out if it's the original board. Do you know if CX-10 boards are the only boards with wire connection traces leading to two sides of the board or did this design carry over to the CX-40s? Only CX-10's are set like that from my experience.

I'm dumb but not that dumb The physical layout isn't quite the same, but I've used a CX40 board in a CX10. The only thing that needed to be done was a slight thinning of the CX10 upper plastic where it sits over the three upper wire contacts on the CX40 board. Screw holes are the same and line up. I have the rectangle ones on my CX-10's and they are flat. Thanks!
