Actually the last boss is very easy, I can tell you how to beat him, with out taking a single hit

I guess we aren't counting Kid Dracula here, the "unofficial" Castlevania game.

I wouldn't call the game "unofficial". It's clearly meant to be a parody of Castlevania. The Japanese title is Akumajou Dracula Special: Boku Dracula-Kun, which definatly means it's officially related (the Japanese title of Castlevania is Akumajou Dracula). Kid Dracula is to Castlevania what Parodius is to the Gradius series. It's not part of the main series, but it's not unrelated either.

I'm not sure what my favorites are in the series, but I like CVI, CVII, CVIII, Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge GB, Castlevania IV, SoTN, Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow, and Dawn of Sorrow quite a bit. Personally, I feel the GB/GBA/DS games should have been on the list. The GBA/DS Castlevanias are excellent games, even if they do use the same formula as SoTN. CVII Belmont's Revenge for the b/w GB is also quite good. IMO, a game that nobody has played like the unfinished DC Castlevania has no business being on the list.

I find it odd how Bloodlines is listed as being for "SEGA" and not Genesis. The other games are listed by system, not the system's maker.

:) Today I set a new Castlevania Dracula X World record, and I beat Dracula without getting hit.

I post this because a person claimed the last enemy on the snes version was next to impossible. :)

You haven't disproved that it's next to impossible.

I'm not a fan of Symphony of the Metroidvania, but, as usual, it's looking to walk away with the win. I'll take I, III, and IV, in that order, any day.

Probably just perfect pattern memorization and lots of free time.

The pre-SotN CVs seem to rely very heavily on just knowing who's going to do what when. You just have to throw hundreds of lives away learning where it all is and what it does.

That's pretty much it yeah. God bless you if you have the patience and self control to actually do the trial and error on Dracula here, as it is easily the most frustrating CV boss I have ever faced.

Luckily rjchamp3 pointed me in the right direction, and there is a kind of sweet spot where you can wait and avoid damage, then pick your well timed attacks. It is actually easy once you have it down. When Drac morphs (as he always does) it gets a hell of a lot harder, and it's largely a battle of luck and attrition, but I did manage to do it once last night.

So I officially beat CV Dracula X then. Cheers for the help. Too bad the ending sucks. In the beginning, Dracula kidnaps Richter's girl, but it doesn't mention her at all in the end. Maybe there is something I forgot about and you rescue her earlier in the game, or maybe she was sitting on my horse in that not very satisfying still shot at the end. Either way is lame though

I THINK you're supposed to rescue her in Dracula X.

I KNOW you are in Rondo of Blood, but they changed so much else that it's not a good indicator.

CastleVania: SotN is my all time favorite in the series. Closely followed by the masterpiece CastleVania III.

She can be rescued, but it is hard and it's a bitch, trust me.

If you want the better ending go for it

I voted for Super Castlevania (SNES), as I was never a fan of the Metroidvania games either. I still haven't gotten around to playing Castlevania II or III for the NES though... :(

I'm hoping that Konami will decide to make a new 2D Castlevania for home consoles, in the vein of Contra: Shattered Soldier. That would be sweet ;)

Don't bother with 2 it sucks, but be sure to pick up 3 asap.

There's no way of knowing that before playing it. To you it sucks, but to someone else it may not. It's not for everyone, but I personally like the game. It's a bit different from other Castlevanias, though somewhat more like the recent "Metroidvanias". There are only two bosses and the feel is quite different from 1 or 3.

I agree that 3 rocks, though. It's one of the better CV's out there. If you have a Famicom (a real one, not a Famiclone), I definatly recommend trying to get ahold of the Japanese version, Akumajou Densetsu. It is better than the US version with higher quality graphics and sound.
