sega saturn x #2 Posted August 22, 2006 The original game boy vanias suck on fire. DoS was great for what it was and better than any other handheld version in my opinion.
JB #3 Posted August 23, 2006 I'm on Circle. Aria was too easy. Harmony was a mess AND too easy. The 8-bit games are legendary for sucking. I haven't played the DS game, but I suspect it's too easy.
Crazy Climber #4 Posted August 23, 2006 Dawn of Sorrow kicks ass, It's not as easy if you go for the real ending. The GB versions sucked balls if I remember correctly. I know I played Ledgends recently and it was horrible. The GBA titles were good too.
Pixelboy #5 Posted August 23, 2006 I think I should step up to the mic to say that Castlevania II GB is a pretty good game, with good music, nice levels and good control. I agree that the other two GB games were crap, but I would encourage anyone here to give C2 another look, as it really doesn't deserve to share the other two games' bad rep. It IS better than the others, decent even, but kid dracula shows what could and should have been done.
BrianC #8 Posted August 23, 2006 (edited) The 8-bit games are legendary for sucking. Huh? Castlevania Adventure and Legends have gotten their share of low reviews, but I don't know where "legendary for sucking" comes from (when I think of "legendary for sucking", Mythicon, Froggo, Mortal Kombat I GB, and Shaq Fu come to mind). CV Adventure has some annoying flaws (slow gameplay and strict jump timing), but it has some merits. The gameplay is hit or miss, but it does do some things quite well. Graphics, sound, and challenge are three of those things. Also, Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge seems to be generally well received. Going from what I heard, CV Legends is nothing special, but not the worst game out there either. I think I should step up to the mic to say that Castlevania II GB is a pretty good game, with good music, nice levels and good control. I agree that the other two GB games were crap, but I would encourage anyone here to give C2 another look, as it really doesn't deserve to share the other two games' bad rep. It IS better than the others, decent even, but kid dracula shows what could and should have been done. I feel Konami did a fine job with CVII, especially with level variety, bosses, and nifty stuff like being able to choose the first four stages. The music is awesome too. Maybe more could have been done, but I don't feel it was necessary since what is there works and works well. Kid Dracula is a very different game from CVII. Different atomsphere, different play mechanics, etc. There is no denying that it's an excellent game, but it also came out later, which means that developers may have had more to work with. Then again, CVII is quite a polished game and doesn't scream "I need to be fixed!". Edited August 23, 2006 by BrianC
Cybergoth #9 Posted August 23, 2006 Dawn is just a lame add-on for Aria, so I rather voted for Aria. I think Portrait of Ruin will claim the crown soon.

I have the Japanese version and it's actually better. The game is all the same, but they swapped out the axe with a boomerang. An interesting change, that actually changes things quite a bit. Castlevania Legends was pretty good too. Then they went and decided it "didn't count" which sucks. If I remember, it told the tale of Sonia Belmont, the very first to use the whip and take on Dracula. Then they backtracked for one of those horrible PS2 games and made up a different Belmont origin, making Legends essentially a What If? game. Anyway, my vote goes to Dawn of Sorrow. Yes it might be a bit easy, but all CVs with levelling up are. Just kill everything and by the time you get to the end, you are totally unstoppable. Still, the game is very solid throughout and the second quest really changes the gameplay by adding two characters that you can swap in and out on the fly
sega saturn x #11 Posted August 23, 2006 I really liked DoS but I just couldn't play throguh it again. I just lost interest. I'm not sure why, but I am sure I would love to see another classic vania on the handhelds.
Sonic #12 Posted August 24, 2006 (edited) i loved circle of the moon and have replayed it in all the different modes three times. Aria of sorrow was pretty easy, and i really like the soul capturing thing. i just started to play harmony of dissonance and like it so far, though the story line (at least in the beginning where i am) is very similar to lament of innocence. in my opinion definitely circle of the moon. I thought Circle of the Moon managed to avoid that issue. They scaled things enough that the game put up a good fight throughout.

You know, like in Symphony of the Night, once you beat DoS, the game is different. The second quest has no levelling, no souls or upgrades and stuff. Just an energy bar and thus gameplay that is a lot more akin to the early CV games.

Just an energy bar and thus gameplay that is a lot more akin to the early CV games. I love the Juilus mode in DoS, but unlike in the other Metroid style Castlevanias, it the alternate character mode does have levelling. No souls or upgrades, but it has the ability to play as three different characters.

rockman_x_2002 #22 Posted August 29, 2006 DoS, hands down, is the best of the bunch. But then again the DS isn't technically part of the Game Boy line (according to how Nintendo bills it anyway). But perhaps in the contest of "best handheld CV game", definitely DoS as of right now. In technicality, the best GB CV title I would say is AoS, as it feels very close to DoS.
