2600Lives #1 Posted August 23, 2006 Anybody else love these types of games? I find a game like this to be a welcome change of pace from killing aliens or hacking monsters to pieces. I love a good old fashioned point 'n click adventure. Currently, I've been collecting quite a lot of them as they are super cheap at most computer stores. It seems that The Adventure Company is the reigning king of these types of games. Right now I'm engrossed in The Black Mirror, and have just finished going through Jack The Ripper, and both of the Syberia games. Next I'm gonna order a copy of Missing Since January, as I've heard that it's one of the single most intense games of this type, where you track down a serial killer and he sends you e-mails directly to your own personal inbox and you have to visit websites the company has set up to decipher clues for the game. So, anybody have any favorites of this type?
liveinabin #2 Posted August 23, 2006 I love the Lucasarts games, particularly:- Sam n Max, Day of the Tentacle, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders and the first two Monkey Island games. They should release these on the DS, main screen (with stylus control) at the bottom, with a zoom view of where your stylus is at the top (to find those difficult items). They'd be great. moycon #3 Posted August 23, 2006 Back in the day Zak McKracken was one of my favorites. There was also the one before that, where you were in a house and the family was REALLY weird and there was a tentacle in that one too, can't recall the name though. Never did beat that one...but Zak I got to the end of. Good times.
jbanes #4 Posted August 23, 2006 I've mentioned this game before, but since you asked... Stargate Adventure!(Click above to be taken to an information and download page)

The Monkey Island ones would probably be my favorites though. Loom was also another good one.

Lemmi #7 Posted August 23, 2006 ive only played maniac mansion on the NES, i think i played though it 3 times with different people also Uninvited, Deja Vu, and Shadowgate for the 3do i liked Daedalus Encounter and Dragon Lore the only ones ive played on my PC were the japanese style dirty point and click games
moycon #8 Posted August 23, 2006 Ohhh Shadowgate I think I played and beat that as well. That was on the NES wasn't it? I'd know it if I saw a picture. There was a game that would show a static first person view of the room and you had to make your way to the end. The walls were mostly made of stone and you came across underground lakes, and rooms with coffins in them.
AussieAtari #9 Posted August 23, 2006 I really enjoyed the two Discworld games, they are the newest "point and click" I've played and the speech and sounds were really impressive. The last ones I've played were Leisure Suit Larry 1 and Space Quest again, years since I last played them, had forgotten most of the clues and had a great time all over again. I've been trying to find a copy of Sam and Max but to no avail so far.

n8littlefield #11 Posted August 24, 2006 I really hope those three hit the Wii's Virtual Console. The cursor movement in them would be so much easier with the wand. Also, I don't Univited, so that way I could stop hunting

I love the old LucasArts games, too. It's as if they could do no wrong back then. SCUMM VM can play them all on modern computers. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is still one of my favorite games of all time. The unofficial sequel IJ and the Fountain of Youth looks to continue the trend, 15 years later! I loved that game, but I never got very far. I just never had the patience to click on every inch of a bare wall just to find something, and in some cases, multiple clicks on the same spot of bare wall. :\ Maybe just me though. Lemmi #14 Posted August 24, 2006 no need to click on walls just put the pointer over the areas and wait for it to change to a hand or something, i think thats what it did its been along time since i played these games, not much replay value unless you wait 10 years between playing them in shadowgate i got stuck at the part where you had to put the 3 levers in a certain position to open the well for a long time, but after i beat that game the other 2 were alot easier
moycon #15 Posted August 24, 2006 its been along time since i played these games, not much replay value unless you wait 10 years between playing them Heh I was thinking this myself. I know I got to the end of that game...but for the life of me couldn't tell you what happened!! It's been at least 10 years. I do remember a room where a dragon would breath fire on you and you needed to be holding a shield I think or you would get fried.
carpecarne #16 Posted August 24, 2006 If anyone is interested, a game is being released for the DS called "Hotel Dusk: Room 215" which is a bit of a film noir-ish adventure game. It looks really neat. http://ds.ign.com/objects/827/827002.html
Inky #17 Posted August 26, 2006 Zak was a blast. I always wondered why they never made a sequel.
liveinabin #18 Posted August 26, 2006 I was playing Zak McKracken yesterday actually. The ScummVM emulator on the Xbox does a cracking job. You gotta try out the FM Towns version of Zak. It had a total graphics and sound overhaul. I'd forgotten how funny that game was. Remember blowing up the egg in the microwave to piss off the air hostess? I know its not an "official" release, but they have made a DS version of ScummVM which is very good from what I've heard. This is the main reason I've been looking into getting a DS flash cart lately See link below for more details: http://scummvm.drunkencoders.com/
liveinabin #20 Posted August 26, 2006 That looks superb. Pity it's so expensive to get all that stuff for the DS.
Flack #21 Posted August 26, 2006 King's Quest III was just remade in all new spiffy VGA glory. http://www.infamous-adventures.com/
AussieAtari #22 Posted August 27, 2006 They both look excellent. I'll have to try out my GBA Flash cart in my DS with SCUMMVM. All I have to do is locate some games code, does anyone have any pointers there?
Atarifever #23 Posted August 28, 2006 The last game I played of this type was Trace Memory for the DS. It has some great puzzels, a decent story, and, I thought, a great feel to it. Sadly, they basically tried to make it easy for 13 year old girls, so they give WAY too many clues before asking you to solve the puzzle. Sadly, that hurts it a lot. If they'd left the puzzles more open, this would be one of the best point and clicks I'd played. Having to take pictures of stuff early on to try to read them for clues way later, having to overlap pictures of stuff you'd seen to spell out secret messages, and having to reflect things from one DS screen into the other were all really unique ways to solve puzzles. If they do a Trace memory 2 and aim it at people 18+, it'd be great.
2600Lives #24 Posted August 28, 2006 Ok, done with Black Mirror. I'm now heading through one called Post Mortem, and once I'm finished, I'ma go to Comp USA and buy it's sequel Still Life. I'm enjoying the HELL outta these games right now!
Atarifever #25 Posted August 28, 2006 (edited) By the way, you might want to keep an eye on this. I've heard it described as a MMO Point and click. http://www.urulive.com/blog/ Something about solving the puzzles in groups online if you want to and having new puzzles added to an ever growing world.
