30 Years!

Recommended Posts

2007 will mark thirty years of the VCS being in our lives.

I was thinking that it would be nice if some of the programmers would consider an update, sequel or tribute to one of the original releases from 1977.

Maybe a bad idea but it just popped into my head.

Hell no, that is a great idea, but would programmers like Bob Polaro, HSW or even David Crane ever want to do something like this would be the real question.

 :?:

How about a compilation cart of the first nine games? Given the 32KB carts we have today, I think it could definitely be done, and most of the games can be a little above 2KB.

I know that the homebrew scene doesn't offer the money and sales numbers that they would probably demand but it would be nice (in my opinion) if one of 'em would do something like this for the community and for posterity.

Would probably be the biggest selling hombrew game ever!

Now THAT is an idea also! :)

Would it be legal for AA to sell ad "Thirty Years of Atari" cart featuring all nine games?

No AA couldn't do it without a license from InfroAtari. But if Atariboy made the label and box art and no one was told who made it for you I thnk I could hook you up with a guy I know who might be able to help you out. Shoot me a PM if you want his email. But AtariBoys Label art will only be used with his permission.

How about if we change the sprites enough so they don't look like the original sprites, change the background color, etc.

Nope, no stupid hacks, the real deal or nothing at all. Atariboy and I are working on something right now. Stay tuned.

Sounds cool!

Of course with the baby being born last week, the missus being out of work for at least six weeks and some cowardly jackass stealing my car :x I won't be able to afford a cart until October or November, that is why I haven't ordered Ladybug yet :|

Of course if someone would like to get me a swell birthday present.......... :D

I had to drawing them one at a time bfore I begin to place each of them in a right spot for the main label center peace.

BTW I drew these all on my new wacom tablet

You are quite the artist, Atariboy2600. Love the 70's look and feel of Basic Math. Reminds me of the old Puff the Magic Dragon cartoons.

I'd love it if one of the original programmers would write a new game for the VCS but I just don't think they have the motivation. If anybody would be a candidate, I think David Crane would probably be the one since he goes to almost every CGExpo.

I interviewed these people, and I have respect for what they've done, but I think they would be at a disadvantage going back to the platform today vs. homebrewers. Today's homebrewer knows how to use today's tools and has absorbed countless technical discussions and code samples on how to do X, Y, and Z. Even someone like David Crane would have to shake off the rust and learn how to use the new tools before he would be able to get anything done.

Maybe if and when Chimera comes out I'll try to encourage David Crane to use its new features on a game since it's kind of a natural evolution of the DPC in Pitfall II. I suspect that he had at least one other game design in mind for the DPC that he was not able to do because of the crash. But I don't think even he would be able to justify the time necessary to do it today.

Here is an idea!

Granted that the homebrew authors of today have a major advantage over the old school guys and the old school guys have a major advantage as far as nostalgia is concerned.

How about a homebrewer TEAM UP with one of the original guys to make a game, Hell the old dude could do as little as come up with a vague concept for a game and the homebrew guy could do the programming, put both names on the cart and have the best selling game in years!

You owe me nothing for this brilliant idea.
