Where to get an ST, and what type?...

Recommended Posts

I'd like to get one, but I don't know if I should get a Falcon or just a regular old ST. All I would use it for is gaming, so I would need to be able to hook it up to my TV, if possible.

Seems like most of the games, like Amiga games, are PAL version, though. :(

A 1040 STe would probably be the best bet for gaming. They are easily RAM upgradable too although most software will run in 1 meg.

Both ST and Amiga can change freely from PAL to NTSC mode so that shouldn't be much of an issue.

eBay is probably the best place to look. I'd advise to not pay more than $30 or so for just a system unit and mouse + joystick.

Software is a non-issue (unless you're a collector of originals). Virtually everything is freely downloadable and since the disk format is very close to MS-DOS, transferring data is easy as well.

I'd say that a 1040STFM is probably the best gaming ST by a nose.

The STEs have some nice extra features but very few games actually use any of them, and they're incompatible with a lot of earlier software. Also, there are very few games where you actually need more than 1MB of RAM, so unless you've got anything specific in mind, the ability to upgrade it easily is a fairly moot point.

Ok, so can you hook it up to a TV with AV cables, or do you need to get a monitor?

I would like to get an A1200 at aome point, and I did see one on Ebay for $99.00. So, how much should I pay for a regular old ST (not STE)?

The STM, STFM and STE models contain a TV modulator. The rest need a monitor. You'd need a monitor anyway for serious use, as the 80 column mode is practically unreadable on a TV, but you might get away without it just for games.

I'm not sure what a good guide price is, but you should be able to get a STFM for a fair bit less than an STE because of the lower spec; there are a lot more of them about so they should be easier to find too.

You would have to hook it to the TV via a game switch since the output is an RF modulator. This would be the same kind of a connection you would see/use on the Atari game systems or a Nintendo. You can get the switch box at a Radio Shack

The Amiga 1200 costs way more then a STE computer, you cannot compare the two price points. To the OP I would get a 520ST or 1040STf for the price that is the best entry level ST's to get into. That is what most of the software was made for.

Or you can use one of these. I hear you get a much cleaner picture with this.

Ive sold STEs for over $200. And Ive sold them for as little as $70. Just depends on how bad people are wanting one.
