ubikuberalles' Blog - Some OVGE Pictures - Part 1

Recommended Posts

Even though it has been two weeks, I thought I'd share a few pictures I took at OVGE.

When I talked about bringing my Altair 680's to school back in May of this year - in this blog entry, Phosphor Dot Fossils thought it would be cool to show off my Altairs at OVGE and he invited me to come over. He even bought a six foot table for me to put my stuff.

Here's a picture of my planned setup for the show: Click here to see image (Sorry about the links, but I'm only permitted ten pictures per blog entry)

On the left is the Altair 8800 (which I've dubbed "S.S. Columbia" partially hidden by the sign holders. Next to it is my terminal, an ADM 5 "dumb" terminal. Next to it is the "S.S. Atlantis", an Altair 8800b. On the far right, partially hidden, are two Altair 680b's. The one on the bottom is the turnkey version of the 680b.

Here's a better shot of the Columbia: Click here to see image the Atlantis: Click here to see image and the two Altair 680's (the S.S. Eagle and the S.S. Endeavour): Click here to see image

I decided to put some old magazines of the era to give passersby a glimpse of what the personal computing scene was like in the late 1970's.

As you can see, these are pretty big computers and they got packed into the trunck of the car pretty tightly. As a result I had one little mishap: Click here to see image

I broke one of the switches to the Atlantis! :( It wasn't too big of a deal since I wasn't planning to power up the Atlantis during the show. However, I brought a couple spare switches just in case.

I went to Tulsa with my friend Paul (aka Pantechnicon on DP - I don't think he is an AA member):

and his son Alex:

and it took a little more than nine hours to get to Tulsa from Albuquerque. We arrived safely in the early evening hours and unloaded the car quickly:

and went out to dinner with some fellow AA/DP forum members:

The next morning I met up with PDF and I was able to quickly set up the computers:

Although I had some initial troubles, I powered up the Columbia and I was able to load the Star Trek game on the computer:

I even built a display case showing off some more magazines, some Altair expansions cards and the storage options for the Altairs in thoses days (cassette tape, 8" floppy and 5" mini-floppy):

Unfortunately I didn't have any room to put the display on the table and so in ended up in a not-so-good position on the floor.

PDF's tables were right next to mine. Here's PDF giving helpful advice to a passerby:

Here's the other PDF table:

PDF was help by his friend Kent:

a very nice and friendly fellow.

I have some more pictures of the show that I'll display on my next blog entry
