Moon Patrol on Mess is glitchy for me.

Recommended Posts

Does this game give you guys trouble while running it on Mess? So far I've used the current version and a few older ones and the game won't allow me to jump with the buggy. Also the sound crackles and skips in sound here and there. I haven't tried all games within the 5200 library yet but so far this is the only one I've encounterd that does all this.

Can someone fill me in here?

Thanks.

Sound issues are par for the course. Typically means the machine isn't QUITE fast enough to do everything right, so the sound occasionally drops for an instant, causing a snap, crackle, or pop(Rice Crispies!).

As far as jumping...

Are you pushing up on the joystick to jump? If so, that's your problem.

The 5200 has 2 fire buttons, and Moon Patrol's programmers elected to use the secondary fire button for jump.

Not meant to be insulting.

I'm just guessing based on your post content that you may only have emulator experience with the 5200, and not be aware of what the actual controller was like.

Or that you have actual 5200 experience but it's been limited, so you just assumed Moon Patrol ignored Fire 2 like so many other things that needed it do(it's rather sad how poorly the 5200 was supported).

At first I tried to play it this way but after that failed I mapped the jump button to one of the pad I'm using with my emulator. Yet I still can't get the buggy to jump. I've tried mapping the jump button to each button on the controller, and still nothing. Everything else about the game works-I can change speeds and fire but just can't get the buggy to jump.

I'm using a Microsoft XBox 360 controller that is compatable with Windows systems by the way. Its played great for every game but this game. I've got an old Side Windre pad laying around-I suppose I could try that one out just to see what happens.

Not insulting at all. :) I'm new to the Atari forums but I've dipped my hand with the Mame and Sega Gens emulators time and again so I'm doing ok wuith the Mess emulator so far. Its just Moon Patrol for the 5200...what in the world is going on with the jumping for me?

If its not too much trouble, can you tell me how you have Moon Patrol mapped to a pad on your PC? I've got Moon Patrol's fire button mapped to my X360 (A) Button, while the jump button is mapped to the button to the upper right-the (B) button. I'll keep grinding away and see if it somehow works today though.

Thanks for the reply.

Umm Mess isnt the best 5200 emu thoe. i would use atari800win plus 4.0 it does both 800.5200

Yeah I'm getting that feeling. Other games have been very problematic - Defender, Donkey Kong, even Pacman at times. I like Mess for other systems but not so much for the 5200 right now. :? I saw the new version of Kat5200 was just released so I grabbed it. Hopefully its abit better. I haven't tried the one you recomended but does it come with a GUI? To be honest I truly suck at trying to handle emulators that have you input stuff like DOS Prompts.

Thanks.

I don't.

I use an actual 5200 with actual 5200 controllers.

As far as emus go, in my experience MESS lives up to the acronym. Standalone emus are almost always better solutions than MESS.

And Atari800Win Plus has a GUI, though I'd have to say that learning the command prompt is a Good Thing anyways.

Update-well I got the problems resolved. The 800 win plus emulator was giving me the same headache as Mess was - two button or more games still wouldn't work properly.

I went ahead and tried out the latest version of the Kat 5200 emulator and instantly the problem was solved. AS I have tried with the other two emulators-I mapped out the 2nd button to my joy pad and now I can jump in Moon Patrol and use the smart bombs in Defender at will.

Maybe I was doing something wrong with both Mess and 800Win+ I dunno. But I got everything working great now with the Kat 5200 one.

Thanks for helping me out folks,I do appreciate it alot.

This should hold me over till my 5200 package I purchased on EBay arrives later this week. :lust:
