Gamefaqs top list -The Top 10 fixed shooters on the Atari 2600

Recommended Posts

I don't consider Centipede a fixed shooter because to me a fixed shooter means you are limited in movement along one plane. Centipede allows free movement, just in a limited area.

What about Wall Defender from the original list then? You have free movement on the grid, no?

I've never played it, therefore it doesn't count. :D

EDIT: I suppose a "true" fixed shooter would be one where the player (who is shooting) is, indeed, fixed in one place - like Missile Command. But I've never read/heard "fixed shooter" used in this way; I've always heard it referring to games where the shooter is fixed to a single plane/axis of movement.

Pretty pointless a category it seems. So does it mean the player must "not move at all" or does it mean the player "can't freely move"? Considering the second, any "rails" game like "Rebel Assault" would auto-qualify for "fixed" then, no?

Have a look here for some more meaningful categorisations of shoot'em ups: Shoot! :)

I've used and heard "fixed" used interchangeably with "rails".

And the list was bogus to begin with; they classify MC as a "fixed" shooter which, while maybe technically correct, isn't how I've ever seen "fixed" used.

Side note: Cosmic Ark shouldn't be there - it's amazing, but not a shooter.

It's a two-stage game, and the "A" stage is indeed a shooter: "In the game's first screen, you must fend off waves of meteors from all four sides of the screen, pushing the joystick in the direction you want to fire." Cosmic Ark

The "B" stage, while technically a "capture" game, strongly resembles a shooter, since you must fire a beam to hit and bring up the critters.

I don't consider those shooter stages. You basically described exactly why I feel the "A" stage isn't a shooter. You just push the joystick in the direction you want to fire, there is no object that you move. I feel that firing a beam and bringing up critters is exactly why the second part isn't a shooter.

Shadow's favorite 2600 fixed shooters (in no particular order):

Commie Mutants

Megamania

Commando Raid

Space Invaders

Phoenix

Missile Command

Crackpots

Plaque Attack

Ram It

Cosmic Ark

I don't care for Demon Attack very much. It lacks something for me, but I can't really figure out what.

I don't get it. If the primary (or only) means of survival/scoring in a game or stage is shooting, what would you call it besides a shooter? What does moving an object have to do with shooting? Are lightgun games not "shooters" either? (there's no onscreen object that you move) How about missile command? The cursor is only a "virtual" object showing your aimpoint. It's indestructible and has no direct effect on any game objects by itself (and is not affected by anything else either). Is this something other than a shooter too?

Basically it's just a reaction test, yes. But it doesn't get more fixed than that

snip......This is a gross over sight on Gamefaqs part......snip

I wondered about that too. Is it really an official Gamefaqs thing or can any chump submit a Top 10 list -- no matter how uninformed? Oh well, at least he's a chump that plays Atari. :)
