+5-11under #1 Posted September 11, 2006 Hello all, I've got this crazy all-in-one device that allows me to transfer GB (and GBC) files between a 3.5" floppy disk (one file per disk!) and a flash cartridge. For the longest time, I thought it was broken, but just recently, found it working. So... I'm wondering what are some good GameBoy games to play (commercial and homebrew)? I'm more into classics, puzzles (this I think would be ideal, because I hate blurry screens), racing, and not into RPGs, Zelda, Metroid. Out of the hundreds (thousands?) of games out there, what's the best, or what are your favourites? Thanks, 5-11under P.S. I've already got Tetris
Spector #2 Posted September 11, 2006 Bomb Jack is a good conversion of the arcade, and I liked the Galaxian/Galaga two-on-one cart as well. Mario Land is a good platformer, but you've probably played that already. I always liked Duck Tales; it might be a licence, but it's above the usual derivative fare one with non-linear platform gameplay and cool tunes. +Psionic #4 Posted September 11, 2006 Balloon Kid, Donkey Kong, Qix and Solar Striker are some of my old favorites. If you like puzzle games, Dr. Mario, Tetris 2, Yoshi and a game called Daedalean Opus (a.k.a. Puzzle Road) are some that you might want to track down. Video #5 Posted September 11, 2006 Any of the Mario Land, and Wario Land games, Natch. Tetris is probably better on the DMG than any other console and handheld at the time IMO. You HAVE to get Donkey Kong 94' And Space Invaders (if the thing will work on the SGB Especially, but I don't know if that would) There's a bunch of Arcade games too, like Centipede and Frogger, Millipede, asteroids, etc, etc... There's a bunch of Mega Man games on the DMG and those rule, and there's a few Kirby games also. I think there's some Metroids, but I don't know how good those are? Anyhow... Those are just some of the games that are good enough that I regularly still play them even today.
Classic Pac #6 Posted September 11, 2006 I always liked Fuinal Fantasy Legend 3 and even though I only played it through my emulator Burgertime Deluxe is very addictive.
shadow460 #7 Posted September 11, 2006 Any of the Final Fantasy games will be good, also Power Mission is an awesome strategy game. Mindscape's Battleship has interesting twists on the classic board game, and Radar Mission adds its own ideas to said board game, plus it has an action mode, too. Zelda is decent. Also, The Game of Harmony is a very obscure puzzle title. It'll drive you bonkers sometimes, but you should try it out. Finally, what would a gameboy be without Pokemon? Pixelboy #8 Posted September 11, 2006 For puzzle games, I'd recommend Boxxle and Boxxle II, Dr. Mario, Quarth. If you're into isometric puzzle-type adventure games, Altered Space is worth a look. There's also Castelian (not isometric, but still a cool puzzle-type game) and Solomon's Club. For a fun pinball game, give Revenge of the Gator a try. For something different, go for Dragon's Lair (the arcade port, not the awful platformer). It's too bad you're not interested in Zelda, because Link's Awakening is really, really good. +5-11under #9 Posted September 12, 2006 Thanks for the information, everyone. I'll check them out. Thanks, 5-11under
cyberfluxor #10 Posted September 12, 2006 Some good sports games: Baseball Tennis Golf -Those 3 games are Mario related in some way (ie. Mario is some player) Blades of Steel -Really good hockey game. Check it out if you haven't Also look into Warrio Bomberman, Pocket Bomberman, any of the Zeldas, Mario World games, Pokemon Blue or Yellow, Qix, and of course many others. I'm not a big GB/GBC gamer so those are a few of my favorites or recommendations. I'm not sure about the Pokemon games due to I don't play them, but I'm told by people that play them that those two are the best.
Classic Pac #11 Posted September 12, 2006 If your going to go for the original Zelda game on the Gameboy I highly reccomend getting the DX version the one with both the color maze and the photos. The photo animations make this game more replayable.
Jagasian #12 Posted September 12, 2006 So you've obtained a flash kit for the original Gameboy, huh? I have a handful of such flash kits. Personally, I use them on the new backlit GBASP, as opposed to an old school Gameboy, but I'd also recommend using a Super Gameboy on the SNES. 1. The Final Fantasy games (one is actually the original Secret of Mana game). 2. The Zelda game. 3. The Metroid game. 4. The Wario games.
Matt_B #13 Posted September 12, 2006 (edited) Guttang Gottong and Quarth (aka Block Game or Block Hole) are a couple of good puzzlers that I've whiled away many an hour on. Parodius and R-Type are both excellent shooters on the GB too. IMHO they're better than the same titles on most other 8-bits. The Zelda games are also worth a look, as they're really only RPGs in name only. There's hardly any monster bashing or stats raising to be done and are more of a mixture of adventuring, puzzles and jump-and-dodge gaming. Links Awakening DX is the pick of the bunch but the two Oracle titles aren't far behind. Edited September 12, 2006 by Matt_B
Flojomojo #14 Posted September 12, 2006 Donkey Kong ("DK94") Gargoyle's Quest Bionic Commando the classic board games cartridge with chess and backgammon Mr. Do! It's hard to get into old-style GB games now, though.
keilbaca #15 Posted September 12, 2006 Definitely Qix. That's my 2 cents, its awesome, and it ported nicely to the GB.
Flojomojo #16 Posted September 12, 2006 Yah, Qix was well done. Good early game, WELL within the limits of the hardware, and one of very few ports of the game.
+5-11under #17 Posted September 12, 2006 I've got Qix on cartridge. It's one of about 3 games that I've kept, after purging myself of games I didn't play. By the way, the cartridge programmer is the CCL listed on this page (without the parallel port): http://www.ziegler.desaign.de/readplus.htm
AussieAtari #18 Posted September 12, 2006 I really liked Bomberman for the GBC and still get it out occasionally. It got me hooked on Bomberman on any format.
Video #19 Posted September 15, 2006 Someone mentioned DX, if your GameBoy thing will support color games, then yes, all the DX games, DR Mario (was that DX? ) Tetris DX, Zelda DX (zelda for gameboy was the peek of the series IMO) And a few GBCOnly games, like Top Gear Pocket (wich won't have the rumble pack, but it didn't add much to the game anyways) Pokemon Pinball, Dragons Lair, was quiet good IMO. And my favorite, WarLocked Only RTS on the GBC, that I"m aware of.
+uosipa llamxew #20 Posted October 21, 2006 *bump* Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters I picked this title up the other day at the local Video Game Trading Post. It's a fun little title - I'm addicted!
JB #21 Posted October 21, 2006 (edited) Interestingly, it seems the GBColor has a pallete designed for Qix. Right+B gets you a black screen with white lines and green fill area on fast draw zones. Green+white checkerboard on slow draw, since the original game didn't use the 4th color(which IS orange in this pallete) for slow fill. p_b #22 Posted October 22, 2006 *bump* Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters I picked this title up the other day at the local Video Game Trading Post. It's a fun little title - I'm addicted! I remember writing a complete walkthrough for this game and sending it in to a game magazine in Germany. I spent nearly a whole week playing this game, drawing maps of the levels and so on. They never printed it, though
bretthorror #23 Posted October 22, 2006 Metroid 2, Super Mario Land, Motocross Maniacs for sure. Game & Watch Gallery rules as well.
shadow460 #24 Posted October 24, 2006 I forgot to mention Miner 2049er. If you want to know what it's like, go to Big Five Software's web page and get the emulator. Play Bounty Bob Strikes Back on that, and you'll get the feel of this port of Miner 2049er, except on the Game Boy, you can't press F to fly.
Headfamily #25 Posted October 24, 2006 Mega man games were good if you want them to be like the original NES versions in play.
