Atari 2600 Gameline Modem on Ebay

Recommended Posts

The Gameline was not for playing online or against friends over phone lines.

It was able to download games from a central server, so you could play them like any other cartridge games, but for a limited number of plays (8 plays for a dollar was typical, in addition to the $49.95 cost of the master unit and a $15 annual subscription fee). When you got tired of a game or used up the plays, you could wipe it and download another (yes, the master unit only held one game at a time!)

For more details, see Remembering the Gameline.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone done anything with these since 1983? I've got one loose, but don't know much about it. I was hoping it would be hacked eventually to be superchargerish. :) -- Without changing or damaging the original unit, of course. :)
