Anyone know anything about PS1 repair(not drive-related)?

Recommended Posts

My PS has, after many years of more-or-less faithful service, begun an attempt to join so many other systems in nonfunctionality.

It's resetting randomly.

I see no pattern to the resets, so I assume it isn't heat-related. Especially since sometimes it resets 6 times in a row, other times it's once and then never again.

I'd like to fix it if I can, even though I could easily substitute a PS2. Don't ask why.

Any ideas for what might be wrong, or links for repair advice?

I remember seeing a fairly comprehensive PS repair guide before, but it was many moons ago and I've long since lost the link.

Sounds like you got the same problem I have, a bad power supply. The sitch sounds the same, random resets, and my problem was fixed by putting a different power supply in the system, but that's not much help as I scavenged the power supply from an already working PSX just to see if it worked.

The reason I want my PSX's to work is because the PSOne's and PS2's don't have a working parallel port to link games (not that I have many, but stilll)

Where can I get power supplys? or find out how to fix it?

Power supply is good, if I can find instructions.

Won't be too much of a pain to work on, relatively speaking. I've opened mine just out of curiosity, and the supply board is a LOT easier to mess with on my revision.

The serial port is for linking, BTW.

Parallel port is for Gamesharks and such.

Eh, well, anyhow, the new systems don't have that. I forgot about the gameshare, but that also won't work on the newer versions (I liked the old plug in with it's auto start and no disc swapping)

As for the power supply, yeah, it's probably pretty easy to fix, but I don't know what any of that tech crap is, it's just a board with resistors and capacitors all over it, ad I wouldn't know where to begin. :P AT least it is a sperate board though, so technically fixable.

Maybe I'll jack the PS out of a dead reader playstation or something, and then sell the busted one on ebay for parts to anybody who knows what their doing.

Do note that the PS2 is not compatible with the Namco analog controllers, either. You'll need a PSX for games like wipEout XL.

I hope you get it going, JB. I kinda lay low in threads like this--listening to learn how others overcome certain problems.

I'd sure like to know how this turns out.

It's still working well enough to be playable right now.

The reboots aren't yet frequent enough to rank as a major impediment to gameplay. They're just a damned annoying minor impediment.

*sighs*

I really miss the days when you could stuff an arbitrary phrase into a search engine and find what you wanted instead of 6 pages of cybersquatters, questionable businesses, and eBay.

I'm looking at a pre-emptive strike.
