I hate Modern Consoles and Love '2600 *LONG*

Recommended Posts

:? im only 17 and i REJECT ALL modern consoles.

(This is from a teenagers view and looks at his generation, not the oldies, so no offense intended oldies!)

I have many reasons for this.

1. i AM NOT GOING TO PAY $800au FOR A CONSOLE AND THEN $50-100 au A POP for games, then accessories and then a few years time buy the new console and repeat the cycle. I am not going to do that just to be cool with my friends, or follow the trend. ( Which accounts for ALOT of sales, wether youd like to admit it or not)

2.i pride myself on bieng different if they want to follow the fad and believe graphics are everything (and hence gameplay is for loosers) than thats thier mistake, and i m said alot of the youngies i know feel this way. its disgusting. im not saying the games are bad,

3. Modern games, with the exception of a few, dont keep you hooked. Thats why half of you who have modern consoles come back to the VCS.

4. SAVE FUNCTION! Any game that has a save function will be beaten eventually. Yes, save is important uif you have to go to work, or sleep, but in reality the game with the save function is 99% of the time insuffiecently challenging and can be broken in about 12-24 hours of gameplay. If developers are going to do this, they s hould make the game exceptionally hard -OR- exceptionally long. With 12 hours of gameplay, at $100 a pop, its not worth it in my opinion. A few games are the exception to this rule, but im not going to pay $800+ just for a handfull of games that are actually worth the price they command.

How usefull would a save function be in 2600' space invaders? WORTHLESS, amd thats what makes it a great game, it never ends, unti lyou can take no more.

5. CONTROLS! Nowdays controllers have upwards of 8 different buttons. DOnt get me wrong, these buttons do serve a purpose, but alot of modern controlls are needlessly complex, and if you dont have the manual to the game depending on the game it can take a while ( 30 mins) to work out. Hell, people still buy cart only space invaders off ebay, i bet it dont take them long to figure out the controls, maybe 15 seconds at maximum?

The VCS offers so much and asks so little. And yes, bieng poor i did grow up with one. but before you say Aha! Lopsided view! i have been exposed to modern consoles PS2, Xbox 360. yes the graphics are good, but thats not the point im arguing. VCS games generally dont have a end, but the ones that do( Raiders of the lost ark, etc) actually take time to figure out and play. and with no save function you either leave the 2600 on, or turn it off and start again, which to me enhance the challenge.

And the later levels of secret quest. many people say having to map the harder levels of it bring the game down. i think these people need to go cry and play on thier xbox 360 cause i like mapping things. pulling out a pencil and paper. its fun to me. My friends just dont understand how i can play in thier eyes "a inferior piece of crap". i say " If my 2600 is so crrap, why can i play phoenix for ever while a few days later your taking your new copy of flat out 2 down to gametraders to trade it off cause youve beaten it?" this usually shuts them up. Hell, any older system like NES, Sega MASTER system, SNES and megadrive all most all games on these consoles like lufia or Super Metroid all have save functions and have sufficent lengthy gameplay and diffucilty to make these classics. So what went wrong?

Still i prefer the 2600. cheap, easy to find, some great games like phoenix and adventure and raiders of the lost ark ad space invaders all avaliable cheaply, i know what ill be buying. you just cant compete with ataris pickup and play. i collect for 2600, knowing its impossible to get every game. im not going to hunt down a NTSC motorodeo when i can easily pickup a PAL version much cheaply and easier. im just aiming ti get as many games as i can, and im not concernd about buying prototypes, im happy to see a dump of a new prototype, exciting!

My issue is not with the graphics, its the gameplay and the price of these new games and the associated console and tthe shocking trend in people of my age. Its sad whats conisiderd retro by my age group.

if anyone actually reads this please, please comment.!

While I agree the 2600 is the king of all consoles, I must also say there is a good level of enjoyment to be had from some games on modern consoles, esp. the handhelds.

Agreed. I enjoy a greater number of games on my classic consoles, but still enjoy my DS quite a bit. The 2600 and other classic systems are great for a quick fix since most of the games only last a few minutes. I'm just a game junkie I guess, because I love all kinds of videogames.

I feel the same way Inky, Atari 2600 will always rule, but I enjoy the new XBox360 and PS2

I'm 19, and the first console I got was the Atari 2600.. It was my fathers, and one morning he had it hooked up, with Centipede playing.. Ever since then, I have not stopped gaming, and love it..

The most modern console I have is an Xbox, but I will be honest.. I love my Atari and my Sega Genesis equally.. Both have great games, and are enjoyable.. My xbox, it's only one game really....

I liked my Sega Genesis as well. It didn't have enough retrocomps and games available though....if it did...I may have stuck with it longer.

Same here. It's always good to see Stella get some love from the younger crowd, but I gotta have my cutting edge entertainment too! The 360 has me into console gaming like no other machine has managed too since probably the Saturn.

I love the 2600, and I love modern consoles :D

By now it's easy to know which games are hot and which games flop on the 2600. You should easily be able to grab half a dozen top notch games here in the States for $10.

But it has its place. Even after timeless classics like Kaboom! and Moonsweeper, I'll still sit down to a newer console. I've been playing my N64 recently, and the PS2. The games I just got finished with were 2600 games. I've also stuck to a particular GBC title for a couple of months, too.

Not all 2600 games are pcik up and play simple like Space Invaders. Try playing Star Raiders without the manual or overlay. :P

Good points, though. I agree with you, my friend.

Do modern consoles have any games that you can play for a few minutes like Centipede, Galaga, Asteroids, Ms. Pac-Man etc.

Everything now seems like you have to quit your job and devote 10 hours a day just to learn the games and 400 hours of real time to finish it

Sometimes I just wanna blow stuff up and be done with it.

The best game is one you can learn from the attract mode.

The last modern console I bought was the Sega Dreamcast. I loved it but mostly for the sports games.

Yes, I like to try and beat my old high score as well.

New games are interactive movies.....*yawn* I don't get into sports games either....except on the 2600.

"Pick up and Play" style games are fading, to be sure, but they're still out there for new systems. There's still the occasional arcade style shooter, then there's the puzzle games, and plenty of 2D fighters. Play without a memory card or disable the hard drive for "Flashback to the 70's" mode, that way you get to start over every time and no scores are recorded. :D

I would agree that th e2600 is one of the best consoles of all time. But there are a few good games to be had on modern consoles as well.

Your friends that are tradeing off games to get new games, either don't have the money to really support their habbit (and they DO suffer if that's the case) or simply don't like games enough to bother with. Either way, their missing out....

My favorite new game is Halo, and it's the only Disc bassed game, that I've actually had to replace due to wearing the cd out. :P That tells you something of replayability on it, it's fairly streight forward, easy to learn, simple in principle, and long enough that if you want to spend an afternoon playing it, you can.

But over all, I'd have to say, few modern games really catch my attention like the 2600's new games, and even a lot of old games do.

rheffera, do you also enjoy the originl NES? I know many NES gamers who feel the same way you do, only about the NES instead of the 2600.

sounds to me that because you despise new games and consols, you won't waste money on them, which would be a waise thing for someone your age. It seems you will be one of those few youth who won't be neck deep in debt by the age of 25 (and this doesn't include car loans, student loans, etc), unless you like to spend just as much money on other things.

Yep i like the NES..mmm metroid.. i have a emulator on my ps1(the most modern console in my house!) i use the ps1 for a large amount of RPG'ing, as the ps1 dd have tons of long, good rpgs.( final fantasy 8!)

please note the views i take are on my generration and are generally my opinon, as no one else i know at my age has any brains.

Its great you oldies ejoy both modern and old, but as i said i simply dont believe its worth the money. even when the 2600 was brand new it didnt cost $800 for %$^ sake!

I know a friend who bought a xbox 360 and didnt have any money left for food and so begged his mother for food.!

2600 FOREVER!

Cool, interesting. I agree, but I don't have a problem with a save option.

I guess.. newer games are overdosing on saves.

Well, I haven't upgraded since SNES.

I got a working playstation 1 with games,

and I played it, didn't like it. and gave it free to thrift store.

One reason I don't collect newer systems, is cause

I don't spend much on games.

------- PS,

I don't reject new game systems, but I don't buy 'em.

I do.. reject most new music... so if you want some kick arse.. music 1982 era

feel free to contact me. I even have a song that has Atari;s Krull sound effect.
