Tempest #1 Posted October 5, 2006 This may be too much to ask for, but is there a list of ST/STE games that can be installed and played off a Hard Drive? I guess I'm only looking for major/commercially released games, and not all the various shareware games that were released over the years. The reason I ask is that I have a PC full of game roms, but I want to load them onto my Mega STE. So far I've been writing them to disk and playing them off the disks, but that gets messy quick and the disk writer isn't too reliable. Playing them off the hard drive would be much easier. I guess what I really need is a WHDLoad for the ST. I'm not sure if the Hard Drive was a standard enough add on for the ST for games to take advantage of it. That's what I've been hoping for, for years now - too bad nobody got around to it. Some of the DBUG guys were doing something nifty towards a loading scheme lately, but I think they got fed up with people or something. True HD installable games are very few in number. As a result I do a whole lot of the gaming on my Amigas that I should be doing on my STs.

Tempest I wish there was a WHDLoad for the ST! Didn't somebody attempt that once? I've not heard anything from it in a long time though. Anyways, I guess we could just start our own list here, with what experience each of us has had... For me the following works: Ultima 6 Space Quest series (1,2, 3). (actually, I believe that just about any Sierra game will) Hitchhikers (again, I think most Infocom games will) Bards Tale (but requires one of the CDs to be in the floppy, IIRC) There are some that will run from HD, but then don't quit out cleanly. Star Raiders does that for me here. I think I have more but I would like to double-check before I list them. Hopefully others will post some examples as well. So what ever happened with that project? Is it still going on? Tempest
Gunstar #6 Posted October 7, 2006 Many of the Hacker disk image menu "CD's" have cracked versions of many games in file form on them which are able to run from HD, multiple load games have everything in the same file(s) as the main game though. Many games were programmed to search the A floppy specifically though, and not just the root game file directory, but loading times can still be significantly lowered by running the main program from the HD, but having the original floppy in the A drive for additional loads. It's not perfect, but it is an improvement. I've learned a few tricks like these in order to get games up and running on my Mega STE at 16mhz, which requires loading games from the desktop as autoload games from the A floppy defualt the Mega STE to 8mhz mode. sniperstorm #8 Posted October 8, 2006 I used to be a hacker back in the day on the Atari ST, everything I cracked woked on the hard drive. I used to make sure of that. Most of those cracked games on are my bbs. I used to be part of the TOS Krew!
ggn #9 Posted October 12, 2006 Hi all, ULS is not dead! D-Bug has started a few months back a big project in which all Automation/D-Bug menus will be converted to being hard disk compatible! Also, as an added bonus we support the Mega STE and the Falcon's higher cpu speeds + caches! So running a game is as simple as copying 2-3 files into your hard drive and double clicking the program icon Now, for games that need writing to disk we are using ULS, for the rest we just add hdd and falcon/mste compatibility. You are all very welcome to visit http://dbug.atari.org and download all the fixed games we've released so far (note: lots more are in the testing stage - we don't want to release faulty versions ) (btw: the games are for the time being on the news section, we are on the process of building a dedicated section for the fixed games!) You are also welcome to give us any comments (positive or negative) or offer us any help
