What do you guys make of this (Golden tee)

Recommended Posts

Radica have released a home version of golden tee but by all accounts is bloody awful.

And so Big Electronic Games are release a 'fulllsized' Club House edition.

I hope it's not like those terrible 12 in 1 midway boxes that you assemble at home... but for $699 for the 20" version of GT it's not a bad price. Be interested to hear from anyone who sees and plays it in the flesh.

Hmm, another interesting looking Radica controller. I'd bet the game is horrible, but maybe if that trackball is of decent quality it could serve other uses.

I might 'make' something out of it yet.

I saw this at the store the other day but I didn't buy it. Didn't look like it would capture the feel of the arcade very well.

That's one hell of an understatment! ;)

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of Golden Tee? I have never even played it, but I've never WANTED to... I'm just still trying to figure out why there seems to be a new version of it out every year, and why it's the ONLY arcade machine you ever seem to see anyplace anymore.

I think it is great fun when your drinking at a bar. I am pretty horrible at it, but enjoy golf games. Some people get pretty serious about the game, and go to tournaments and all of that stuff.

The reason you see it is because people play it. If it stopped making money they would put something else in there. (Gun and Driving games are pretty much the only alternatives)

I suppose so. I guess I'm just out of touch. These days I never play an arcade game at a pizza place, etc. unless it's a Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga "Class of '81" machine.

BTW, I saw a thing on MTV a few years back about the Golden Tee tournaments. Nuts!

Here's some reviews for the Radica version. One course, no control, top down view during play? Oh dear.

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?_enco...asin=B000EYF7YQ

The bad news....This version is not like the 2005, Live or Complete versions you find in the bar. If you have between $2K-$6K to get one of them, go do it. If you are looking for a cheap pacifier to play if the nearest bar with a Golden Tee is 25 minutes away, this is a $40 version to tide you over until you can get out for a pop and a round. Graphics are not near the current and the game play is actually the old old version of GT (Fore!) There is just one course on this Radica version as well...to me, that was the biggest bummer.

The good news...For those of us that would like cheaper home standup version, Target (and other stores) will be selling a standup version called 'Golden Tee Clubhouse Edition' starting in October 2006. [...] This will have 3 courses from my understanding.

GOLDEN TEE THIS IS NOT!!!!, September 15, 2006

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW AND HAVE PLAYED GOLDEN TEE, THIS IS NOTHING LIKE THE ARCADE GAME. I SAW THE CONTROLS AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GREAT. NOT EVEN CLOSE. FROM GOLDEN TEE TO GOLDEN TEE LIVE, I HAVE PLAYED THEM ALL. FIRST THE GRAPHICS ARE TERRIBLE, PIXELED AND NOTHING, I MEAN NOTHING LIKE THE ARCADE GAME. ONLY AN OVERHEAD SHOT, NO SHOTS OF BEHIND THE GOLFER, ACTUALLY, YOU NEVER SEE THE GOLFER, JUST A BALL ON A TEE. TO SLICE AND HOOK THE BALL IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, YOU ALWAYS CHANGE CLUBS WHEN YOU TRY. YOU CANNOT TELL HOW HARD YOU ARE HITTING THE BALL AS WHEN YOU PULL THE TRACKBALL BACK, NOTHING HAPPENS AND YOU ONLY KNOW HOW HARD YOU HIT THE BALL AFTER YOU PUSH THE TRACKBALL FORWARD. AFTER ONE ROUND, MY TRACKBALL WILL NOT HIT OFF THE TEE AND I ONLY GOT A SHORT DRIVE. THE ONLY THING THAT THIS GAME HAS GOING FOR IT IS THE TRIVIAL CONTROL BOARD OF GOLDEN TEE GAMES AND BACKSPIN. IN SHORT, SAVE YOUR MONEY, GO PLAY THE REAL GAME OR GET ONE FOR YOUR HOME. DISAPPOINTED GREATLY IN EVERYTHING THIS GAME WAS MADE OUT TO BE. INCREDIBLE TECHNOLOGIES NEEDS TO NOT SELL OUT THEIR NAME ON A GAME LIKE THIS WHEN THE REAL ARCADE GAME, EVEN THE PC GAME, IS SO MUCH BETTER. I AM RETURNING MINE TODAY.

I frequently see older Golden Tee's (98,99,00) go for around $500. Even cheaper for a conversion. I'd say your better off waiting around for one to show up. They sure have made enough of them. I got mine (99) for $500, its the former MK cab in the left of this picture.

You can always upgrade your boardset also.

Elsewhere on the Big Electronic Games website:

http://www.mybiggames.com/konami.html

Looks like they're following up the Midway 12-game wannabe arcade cabinet they released last year with a Konami 12-game machine this year. I must not be well versed in Konami arcade games, though, as I only recognize half of the games listed. Considering the quality of last year's machine, however, I'm not even considering getting this one, though I would play it if I saw it on display in a store.

Speaking of slightly shrunken arcade machines being sold at retail stores, I discovered that Zizzle has released at least two small-footprint pinball machines to stores. I've seen boxes of a Pirates of the Caribbean table at a Best Buy and a floor model of an X-Men table at a Dick's Sporting Goods. If I remember correctly, they were $400 each. However, the floor model I saw of the latter was more than a little underwhelming, not just because it wasn't full size (strange that the (Pirates) box claims "full size," despite it also having a picture showing clearly that it's not), but because it just looked and felt so cheap. The plunger in particular felt ready to pop out into my hand. Also annoying, the picture of the Pirates model seemed to show that its playfield was exactly the same as that of the X-Men floor model I saw. Maybe the scoring scheme works differently, but come on, that's just sad.

That picture is really funny you have an adult trying to play a small ass arcade game he’s all hunched over looks like it would give you back problems if you played it too long. That’s definitely a waste of money who wants to stare at a Marquee while their playing a game? Oh and it doesn’t even look like the spent the money to light the marquee what the hell!!

It might be cool for a kid but I would wait until after Christmas and they will be closing them out everywhere for like $200.

You think with all the advancements we have had since the original arcade days it wouldn't cost that much to throw a ligt bulb behind the marquee, wonder why they didn't?

i think i was playing that one in the early to middle 90's and i was awesome at that game

it was at Thunderbowl lanes in Allen Park
