Gabriel #1 Posted October 23, 2006 What's the freakin' deal with all the systems being set up vertically nowadays?
Lord Helmet #2 Posted October 23, 2006 I don't like it at all. I'm pretty sure that my PS2 started getting DRE's after I tried putting it verically. My 360 sits flat, as will my Wii.
Ross PK #3 Posted October 23, 2006 It's to save space, especially in Japan. I've never bothered having my PS2 vertical, for one I don't need too, and for another I'm worried about it toppling over.
keilbaca #4 Posted October 23, 2006 It's to save space, especially in Japan. I've never bothered having my PS2 vertical, for one I don't need too, and for another I'm worried about it toppling over. exactly. It is to save space, as that's a BIG thing in Japan. And I never bothered to put mine vertical either. Then again with the constant changing of games on my hard drive, it'd topple if it was vertical for sure. privateers69 #5 Posted October 23, 2006 What's the freakin' deal with all the systems being set up vertically nowadays? Smaller footprint space, So it can fit in between the TV and entertainment console wall. Would you like your computer lying flat as well?? Used to have mine sitting on my desk w/ the monitor on top of it. yechh.. barely enough room.. It was nice when it finally went vertically and sat on the floor with the drive bays high enough for you to swap CDs and floppies.
Atarifever #6 Posted October 23, 2006 My 360 sits flat, as will my Wii. *insert "that's what she said" comment*
liveinabin #7 Posted October 23, 2006 They're not as pushed for space in Japan as that. Most of the city dwellers live in apartments, sure, but not so small that you couldn't have a console lying flat in it.
xenomorpher #8 Posted October 24, 2006 I always have my PS2 and 360 stood up vertical. That way I have room for my Gamecube and Dreamcast.
shadow460 #9 Posted October 24, 2006 I've got five systems sitting atop my gaming rig, and they all sit flat. They aren't all small, either. I've got a model 2 Saturn, a 30001 boxy PS2, my third run 7800, a toaster NES, and a first run Nintendo 64. I've also got a DVD player sitting up there. All of it except the Saturn sits atop a Commodore 1701 monitor, which does not have a lot of space on top as it is. The Dreamcast, when it's hooked up, generally sits on the floor. Otherwise, it is stored amongst the game carts. Oh, BTW, my apartment is 455 square feet, too. If I've got room to set up all my consoles flat, then space must not be an issue. that will certainly change when I get a 5200.
Ze_ro #10 Posted October 26, 2006 Considering all the issues with heat generated by the latest generations of hardware, I'd have to be REALLY hard pressed for space to line them all up vertically. Maybe so many people had problems with their 360's overheating because they stupidly crammed them into tight spots without thinking of air flow. Japan aside, I think consoles standing on their sides has become somewhat of a "hip" thing now... sort of like how everything is stealing the simple white look of the iPod. Personally, I think it's silly. I keep all my systems horizontal. Although that might change with the Wii. --Zero
+FujiSkunk #11 Posted October 26, 2006 I think it's a nice choice to have. I don't necessarily buy the "pressed for space" argument either, but there are some situations where a vertically mounted console is more ideal. I'm not sure when my TV stand was made (I bought it at a thrift store), but it seems to have been intended for storing either records or laserdiscs on each side, with a couple of shelves for electronics in the middle. As it turns out, those center shelves were a perfect place for the center speaker of my surround sound system, and the vertical PS2 fits nicely in the record/LD space to the left. moycon #12 Posted October 26, 2006 My PS2 and 360 sit vertical. Mostly to save space in or around the entertainment centers.
liveinabin #13 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm gonna lay my Vectrex on it's side! Damn vertical systems
jaybird3rd #14 Posted October 27, 2006 I managed to find a way to hook up a 7800, a 2600, a Jaguar, an Intellivision, a Dreamcast, an XEGS, and three PCs all in one 11'x12' room (which also has a Pong cabinet and a couch in it), so I don't understand the "not enough space" argument either. I'm a firm believer in staying horizontal.
BeerGnome #15 Posted October 28, 2006 me personaly.. with electronics. I perfer to stack them instead of line them up.. I meen .. I'm really not saving, or losing any space becouse of it. and really.. i'm a little pissed off at the 2600 becouse of its slant cartrige loading forces me to put the system on top of the pile, and allow enough room for the supercharger! what I NEED to do is to case mod my spare 26k into a rack case and be done with it.. well.. y'know.. enough "hobbying" and we can all make everything intigrate perfectly.. but, you look at all the designs.. and stacking on the horizontal is really only been the prevence of the PS2. even the X-box, while relitivly flat and front loading has a bit of an arch to its case, and the 360 has a dogbone shape to it. I persoanly I can't say I've seen the case layouts for the PS3, or Wii so I can't comment on how they "stack Up" as it were.. but what I've noticed is that all the manufactures is that somehow. some way. they try to put thier system at the top of the pile as it were.. and who can blame them? bear in mind.. the most of us here.. are pretty hard core and own a plethera of systems. to keep them all accessable at once poses orginizational problems.. but as a whole.. we don't carry brand loyalty as much game play loyalty.. and thats why most family freindly games are multi-platform, and most gamer specific games are console specific. but most of the time.. the console is designed so that when you hook it up.. its too much of a pain in the ass to hook up something else so you keep to one system hooked up the majority of the time. what I can comment on is that most componants nowadays are keeping within a 14"x8" footprint.. Vic George 2K3 #16 Posted October 28, 2006 I don't like having to stack a game system like it's a PC tower.
JB #17 Posted October 28, 2006 I'm gonna lay my Vectrex on it's side! Damn vertical systems And thus we find the heart of the matter... all the vertical systems now are designed to complement the ultimate game system that is The Vectrex.
BydoEmpire #18 Posted October 28, 2006 I like my ps2 vertical - it fits well in the entertainment center next to my TV. It's nice to have the option.
