Tutankham -- Pretty darn good game!

Recommended Posts

Graphics aside, Tutankham is a pretty darn good game!

It pretty much has all the elements of the arcade game. Sure, the graphics aren't spectacular, but aside from some slight movement glitches, the gameplay is solid!

Give 'er a spin!

I used to love the full size arcade game and I think the cart game was a pretty good conversion.

 :ponder:

Well yeah, but of course that's just how the original game is. firing sideways only... that IS Tutankham the video game :)

Otherwise it's sort of like wishing you could move diagonally in Pacman :P

yea...its cool....i just hate waiting for the enemies in the later levels to come up so i can shoot em with my sideways gun...plus my copy of it is missing its label(the only game in my massive collection of atari games to have that...so that must count for something) :D

IMO the controls are crap on 2600 Tut - in the arcade, with two fire buttons, you could easily move R while firing L, move L while firing R, and fire either direction while moving U or D. On the 2600, you can still move in one direction and fire in another but the control scheme is awkward and frustrating.

Plus - keeping the sideways firing while changing the scrolling to vertical doesn't make a lot of sense.

They compromised where they had to, but tried to keep everything else true to the arcade, and ended up with a bad mish-mash.

...in the arcade, with two fire buttons...

Actually the arcade version used two joysticks. An 8-way for movement, 2-way for firing.

I agree there is a certain amount of "sloppiness" in the way the game plays. I think this is mostly due to them trying to preserve the arcade gameplay. But overall it's a pretty solid port. I was playing it just yesterday and commented to myself on the cool multi-colored levels and caverns. And virtually no flicker.

I like this game too, though the controls are a little tough to get used to.

It's good to see this much maligned title get some love. :)

Love the ideal of this one.The daring adventure moving thru a maze filled with danger.I get in the mood to play this every now and then just like another Parker Bros.game Reactor.Wish the controls were a bit better.Good game overall.

Frankly, I like shooting scorpions. I would rather shoot a scorpion than have to jump over it. \

I always loved this game and thought the graphics were great.

I agree with you there. They could have had layouts that play much like the arcade if they'd rotated everything 90 degrees. The kernel would probably have been easier, too (reuse the player's player for the shots).

that is kinda funny....back in old egypt if King Tutankham woulda saw this game and the Atari....he would have made all of Egypt worship the Atari and this game instead of Ra. All get on your knees to Parker Bros. Tutankham....lol I can just imagine lol lol

I never played ANY version of Tutankham until recent years. Though I thought it was interesting that, for a Konami game, the arcade version would have a death sequence similar to that of Defender whenever I watched somebody play it.

I actually remember buying this game for $4.95 at Toys R Us circa 1985

The 2600 version isn't horrid. But the O2 version is amazingly good. I'm hoping it gets a U.S. release - even if they can't fix the glitches that crop playing it on an NTSC machine.

I've always liked the 2600 version of Tutankham. It wasn't until years later that I played the arcade version and saw how different it was. The game itself is somewhat frustrating in places (there are some instant kill spots on levels 3 and 4 that are just plain unfair, but the bulk of the game is fun. This is one of the few games where having the manual actually improves the game since it gives since descriptions and backstories to all the treasures.
