myfriendskiba #1 Posted November 5, 2006 ....but it didn't come with cables, I can use the AC cable from my Dreamcast, but I still need to find an AV cable. Do I have to get a Saturn one or will some other cable work. Just trying to expand my options. Thanks
Lost Monkey #2 Posted November 5, 2006 You need a cable specifically made for the Saturn -
JB #3 Posted November 6, 2006 Or make your own... if you can find a miniDIN10 by some miracle. http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/saturnav.htm
shadow460 #4 Posted November 6, 2006 I'm sure you could hack the console. Those mini plugs are a *blip* to find. Some of the game shops around here have the RF boxes. I haven't looked very hard, but I bet they probably have the composite cables, too.
Ghost Soldier #5 Posted November 6, 2006 The rf cables seem to be pretty common around here. They can be had on ebay for a few dollars.
cyberfluxor #6 Posted November 6, 2006 Get those cables! Do you have any games for the system yet or have any plans on certain titles? The Saturn is my favorite game consule and have been collecting for it the past 2 years. Recently I had someone online modify a unit for me so I could switch between EU/US/JPN regions and it has opened more gaming for me and has worked out great. 20eyes #7 Posted November 6, 2006 I modded my console to use RCA plugs, much easier than having to need another rf switch .
madhatter667 #8 Posted November 6, 2006 Congrats on the Saturn... it's a fun system. Poke around online, I am sure you can dig up a set.
jsoper #9 Posted November 6, 2006 There's an s-video cable for the Saturn also. People say composite is better for Sat and PSX, but I like sharpness. Can always take my glasses off to "fuzz" things up

The kid at the flea market just had the Saturn, but there's also a Virtua Cop 2 disk in there, sadly no gun, or controllers. Lately I've been really into retro games, and thought that the disc-based consoles would be a nice place to start. Plus I've rarely seen a Saturn in my expeditions, and for $3.00 I couldn't let it slip by. As for games I plan on getting anything I come across, hopefully I come across Guardian Heroes, Grandia, NiGHTS,( plus maybe Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga ) Any other recommendations? shadow460 #12 Posted November 7, 2006 Get Virtua Cop 2 even if it doesn't have a gun. It supports every controller known to man. Yes, it even supports the Sega mouse! More importantly, though, you'll have it when you do find a gun. As for guns, the blue Cobra Gun by Nuby is pretty good and it'll work with pre GunCon PSX titles, too. When you wanna play Saturn games with it, you just flip the plug around and there you go. It is quite heavy, though. In fact, you could probably pistol whip someone with it. If you want a lighter gun, get the Stunner. It's the orange version of the Saturn light gun. The blue Virtua Gun has a longer cord, but it's not quite as sturdy as the Stunner. Gabriel #13 Posted November 7, 2006 As for games I plan on getting anything I come across, hopefully I come across Guardian Heroes, Grandia, NiGHTS,( plus maybe Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga ) Any other recommendations? Well... I'd really recommend you not worry about Panzer Dragoon Saga. As far as I'm concerned, it's a semi-passable game boosted to mythic proportions by overzealous Sega Saturn fans and rarity. It just isn't worth the price you'll probably pay to acquire it. If you're going to get a Panzer Dragoon title for the Saturn, get Zwei. It doesn't age well at all, but it's the best of the bunch. I'd also steer clear of Guardian Heroes. Awful, awful game. And, along with Fighting Force, proves how far the brawler genre had fallen, and also that there is no loving god. I'm convinced the popularity of Treasure developed games is some kind of cruel prank someone started that got out of hand.
JB #14 Posted November 7, 2006 I'm sure you could hack the console. Those mini plugs are a *blip* to find. Yah... I had enough trouble finding a mini-9 for my Genny 2. I've never even LOOKED for a mini10. As for guns, the blue Cobra Gun by Nuby is pretty good and it'll work with pre GunCon PSX titles, too. And many post-Guncon games. There's basically "Konami gun" and "Namco gun" modes. Namco gun is, obviously, the Guncon. Konami gun is probably the good ol' Justifier. Most neutral-party games supported both. Obviously, Namco and Konami only support their own gun. The Guncon's a lot more accurate, though, which made it the preferred lightgun if ti was available. cyberfluxor #15 Posted November 7, 2006 Those are some expensive games you want, might want to tone it down. If you go for the costly titles first you may dislike the system, start lower. Some good quick picks: Saturn Bomberman, Hong-On GP, BakuBaku, Panzer Dragoon Zwie, Grid Runner, Darius Gaiden, Galactic Attack, Rampage, Bust-A-Move 2 or 3, Dark Stalkers Revenge, Gex
chadtower #16 Posted November 7, 2006 When Panzer Dragoon Saga came out it was superior to every similar game in just about every way. Better sound, the visuals were stunning, and the gameplay was extremely novel and fun. It was what they say it was. Sadly, most of the 32 bit generation doesn't stand up all that well. That's the pitfall of the first generation of 3D graphics.
Atariman #17 Posted November 7, 2006 Yeah, I'd agree that you should tone down your expectations for the time being. Although I would HIGHLY recommend getting NiGHTS into dreams - along with sega's 3D pad (the best controller of all time, hands down - in my opinion) Using the 3D control pad is an absolute dream with NiGHTS (the only reason I ever bought a Saturn back when they were being closed out). Another great game to keep looking for is Sonic Jam - as far as I know this is the only Sonic compilation that lets you use the spin dash in the original sonic game (which makes it quite interesting). It also has some other stuff on it such as a picture gallery and game music player, but I won't try to explain this very much more than that as I'm afraid of mixing together memories of Sonic Jam and the Sonic Mega Collection for the Xbox. Just get a few of those less-rare killer titles and your Saturn will serve you well.
chadtower #18 Posted November 7, 2006 Saturn quality is easy to tell... buy the first party Sega games. They are all great. And get a pair of Stunners... the best games on the system may be Virtua Cop 1 and 2 and House of the Dead.
Gabriel #19 Posted November 7, 2006 Galactic Attack, That one is Layer Section/Gunlock isn't it? I'd kind of like to see the redo of Shadow Squadron. I think that's a Japan only one, though.
JB #20 Posted November 7, 2006 Galactic Attack, That one is Layer Section/Gunlock isn't it? Indeed it is. Also notable as the first game in the "Ray" trilogy. Was RayForce in Japan. RayStorm and RayCrisis kept their names worldwide.... well, the Saturn release of RayStorm wound up as Layer Section 2, but the PS version remained RayStorm. myfriendskiba #21 Posted November 8, 2006 thanks for the suggestions guys. I've also been eyeing FPS ports like DOOM, HeXen, and Quake; are those worth getting or are they sub-par? Also are there any good strategy/RPG games that I don't know about?
JB #22 Posted November 8, 2006 thanks for the suggestions guys. I've also been eyeing FPS ports like DOOM, HeXen, and Quake; are those worth getting or are they sub-par? Also are there any good strategy/RPG games that I don't know about? Get the PC FPSes. The console ones are always scaled back rather markedly. Especially Quake. As I recall, that's where "mouse-look" started to become important(or trackball-look, in my case). There's not a good PoV control on the Saturn. madhatter667 #23 Posted November 8, 2006 I heard that Resident Evil for the Saturn had some system specific goodies thown in there. The Saturn is a neat console... I thoroughly love mine, although my library is very limited. I have an Action Replay for imports... to me it just seems to be the easier solution. It also acts as a RAM cart. Just a thought... you might want to pick one up, given the amount of import titles available for the console.
JB #24 Posted November 8, 2006 I heard that Resident Evil for the Saturn had some system specific goodies thown in there. Probably. Megaman 8 was the same way. Had 2 Saturn-exclusive bosses(reincarnations of Woodman and Cutman, if I recall), as well as just being better.
Atarifever #25 Posted November 8, 2006 (edited) Hey guys, while we're one it, anyone know any good online North American stores that sell a decent amount of Saturn games? I can find pretty much anything I want for most of the systems I have in good, secure online stores, but nobody seems to have any Saturn stuff. I avoid e-bay because it's so much trouble finding dealers who take money orders, ship to Canada, have a "buy now" feature (I hate the whole bidding war thing), have a good reputation, and who don't overcharge the shipping for stuff to Canada. I prefer buying my stuff through good old fashioned online stores, the way nature intended. Edited November 8, 2006 by Atarifever
