Gabriel #26 Posted November 8, 2006 thanks for the suggestions guys. I've also been eyeing FPS ports like DOOM, HeXen, and Quake; are those worth getting or are they sub-par? Also are there any good strategy/RPG games that I don't know about? Well, Dragon Force is the gem of the Saturn as far as strategy RPG games go. You'll pay a pretty penny for that one. I think there's a game called Blazing Heroes that's passable.

Also are there any good strategy/RPG games that I don't know about? All three are subpar at best. I consider them among the bad games for the system. Powerslave, a similar FPS style game, is a much better game than those three and is one of the Saturn's biggest sleepers. FWIW, most of the big PC name game ports were not good on the Saturn. Myst isn't worth buying either. Those games just didn't translate well to a closed platform like the Saturn or PS1. Get the PC versions.

bust3dstr8 #29 Posted November 8, 2006 The Saturn is the shmup king of consoles. Only problem is, most of them are JAP only. So your will need to chip it, do a jumper mod, or like Madhatter said pick up the 4-1 Action Replay expansion cart. I love the Saturn it is by far my favorite console, this is coming from a shmup freak so it's probally a bit biased. Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight is a game worth looking into and i think Treasure released a decent game for the Saturn also.
chadtower #30 Posted November 8, 2006 I have always been a die hard Saturn fan and own most of the domestic library... but I'd definitely say the PCE is the king of SHMUPs.

shadow460 #32 Posted November 9, 2006 thanks for the suggestions guys. I've also been eyeing FPS ports like DOOM, HeXen, and Quake; are those worth getting or are they sub-par? Also are there any good strategy/RPG games that I don't know about? You mean like Shining Force III? It's got great reviews and enormous battlefields. If you're looking for pure strategy, Command and Conquer fills that void. Red Alert works, too, but it's probably still in prototype form only, and it is likely to slow to a crawl during gameplay. If you're looking for a turn based RPG, Shining the Holy Ark cannot be beaten. It goes for about $50, IIRC. For someone beginning Saturn collecting, Shining the Holy Ark is a good entry level RPG. I second Gex. It's hilarious. Tempest 2000 is a good shoot 'em up game, and a worthy sequel to the classic. It features a good techno soundtrack which is recorded in redbook audio like a normal CD. I also recommend NiGHTS, and if you like gun games, Area 51 is another entry level game for ya. If you're looking for an FPS hybrid, Enemy Zero is a combination of FPS, RPG, and outright freak show. It's pretty rare, too, but doesn't sell for much. Defcon 5 is another FPS hybrid, but the Saturn port is not up to snuff. Spend a maximum of $5 for a complete copy if you have to have it. For sports titles, I recommend World Series Baseball 98, 1995 Sega Rally Championship, and any version of Worldwide Soccer. I think Grandia made it onto the Saturn, too, if so, get that. chadtower #33 Posted November 9, 2006 Command and Conquer is terrible on the Saturn. The controller is just not suited to it. Shining the Holy Ark is one of the more expensive games on the console. A good turn based substitute is Mystaria/Blazing Heroes. Very underrated game, graphics a bit basic but with strong gameplay, and much less expensive. spacecadet #34 Posted November 9, 2006 I think Grandia made it onto the Saturn, too, if so, get that. (spit-take) Grandia, in fact, is a Saturn game! It was ported (badly) to the PlayStation years after the fact. But originally, it was the game that Saturn die-hards used to throw in the faces of the Final Fantasy VII crowd, when the Saturn and PS1 were still in the midst of battle. Unfortunately, it was never released in the United States. So all we have is the sub-par, though still playable PS1 port. But you can probably get the original Grandia for pretty cheap if you just want to see what it's really supposed to look like. (And it's not like it's completely different, it just runs a lot smoother.)
shadow460 #35 Posted November 10, 2006 That;s why I wasn't sure about Grandia. I remember the hype around it, but I never saw it in stores. I didn't pay much attention to the import titles, so that would be why I missed it. I wonder if Command and Conquer was compatible with the Sega mouse. It actually isn't a bad game for the system, even if it's not the best port of the game itself. Many of the controller commands are not listed in the instructions. Mastering those commands makes the controller a lot easier to work with.
