Cybergoth #1 Posted November 7, 2006 Hi there! Just interested in the stationary console versions. Greetings, Manuel
Gabriel #2 Posted November 7, 2006 I've never played the SMS version, but I'm confident there's no way it can compare to the Genesis adaptation.
vdub_bobby #3 Posted November 7, 2006 I think I've only ever played NES Gauntlet II and it, um, sucks. Even two-player it isn't a lot of fun, though that didn't stop me and Tommy from slogging through about a half hour of it. I was gonna say you forgot the A8 version, but realized that you're looking at console ports only.
JamesD #4 Posted November 7, 2006 And I haven't seen *any* of those versions but you didn't include an none of the above option.
+remowilliams #5 Posted November 7, 2006 Genesis, easily by a mile. I was gonna say you forgot the A8 version, but realized that you're looking at console ports only. Just as well, the A8 version was umm... lacking. Now the ST on the other hand, man that played a mean Gauntlet!
figgler #6 Posted November 8, 2006 I used to like NES Gauntlet 1, but since Midway Arcade Treasures came to consoles, if I need the Gauntlet fix, I just play the arcade version
Bruce Tomlin #7 Posted November 8, 2006 There was an SMS version? Must've been Euro-only. Gauntlet IV is a pretty much faithful conversion, with only two differences: no treasure bonus multiplier (which I never noticed in the original game), and you can't drop more than nine coins per character, which screws up the "quarters for the wizard, food for the elf" mode of one-player-two-controllers play that I learned to do on the arcade machine to get high scores. It even has the vanishing sprites problem in a screen full of ghosts. So yesterday I went to the grocery store, and in the shopping baskets of Halloween clearance crap was the GBA version of Gauntlet/Rampart for eight bucks, marked down from fifteen. The Gauntlet plays like a clone, and not the real thing. Only one character at a time, and continues instead of coins (reasonable for a GBA version), but certain things were obviously different. The first thing I noticed was that you can't shoot over keys, which I'm pretty sure you can do in the real game. Diagonal shots through cracks ALWAYS got the "one-off" hits on generators, which was something that only worked part of the time in the real game. In door levels, the edges separated differently. You can walk THROUGH Death! Hidden Potions only seemed to be on the treasure levels. And collision detect on shots seemed to be off, though it erred in the player's favor. It was okay for eight bucks.
Lauren Tyler #8 Posted November 8, 2006 Gauntlet IV is a good game, I'll give it that, but the fact each of the four players has to choose a different character really turns me off. I still think that Gauntlet 2, with the ability to choose more than one of the same character, and the constant randomization of dungeons, is the best. Just grab a few buddies (and a four player adapter) and some snacks and drinks and go for it!
Crazy Climber #9 Posted November 8, 2006 There was an SMS version? Must've been Euro-only. They made all kinds of crazy Euro only releases for the SMS. Makes me want to maybe try collecting them.
Gregory DG #10 Posted November 8, 2006 I really only played the original NES version extensively. The others I've only played for a few moments.
Almost Rice #11 Posted November 8, 2006 What, no computer versions? I only played the Atari 8bit, IIgs, and Gauntlet IV. So, I could only pick one from the above.

BrianC #14 Posted November 9, 2006 Any special reason why the GB b/w Gauntlet 2 is omitted?
Almost Rice #15 Posted November 9, 2006 Apple IIgs? Pics? I scan the box when I get home.
Cybergoth #16 Posted November 9, 2006 Any special reason why the GB b/w Gauntlet 2 is omitted? Other than that I said in my introductionary post that I'm only interested in comparing stationary console versions? No.
superjudge3 #17 Posted November 9, 2006 I & II for the NES are my favorite. I also liked the N64 multi-player version.
+remowilliams #18 Posted November 9, 2006 Apple IIgs? Pics? IIGS Gauntlet
Flojomojo #19 Posted November 9, 2006 Gauntlet IV on the Genesis looks amazing to me. Long quest mode, 4 player support, PLUS all the classic graphics and sounds from the originals. I'll never play it (seems like it would be a snoozefest), but if I were forced to play only one console version of Gauntlet, that would be it. That said, anyone want to play XBOX 360 Gauntlet with me sometime? Gamertag is "flojomojo"
