Are Games Industry Professionals Buying PlayStation 3 or Wii?

Recommended Posts

It would seem that with the exception of our own lovable CPUWiz (who is still a die-hard Zelda fan, despite his strong opinion of the PS3 ;)), the game industry professionals are far more excited about the Wii than the PS3. :)

If I were a "games industry professional" (whatever that means), I'd expect to get one from work. I'd also try hard not to show favoritism unless I was trying to make a point by doing so. A "professional" would play all the systems, not just favorites.

At least one of the people interviewed did get the Wii through work. As for what "professional" means in this context, it means people who work at large game prodution studios. Ubisoft, EA, Full Sail, Activison, GarageGames, and others all reported in. :)

Some of them do say that they're getting both systems. A few are even getting a PS3 but no Wii. For personal preferences though, the majority are saying that they want a Wii for their own personal use. Apparently, most of them don't want to shell out the dough for a PS3 at the moment. I imagine that will change once Sony gets their production problems resolved, and the price of the console drops.

This is the closest picture I could find of Mario.

None shall buy or sell save those with the mark of the Wii.

*groan*

That's just terrible. How many bad jokes must we endure in this topic? :P

Although, I wonder how many people who commented in this thread actually read the article? :ponder:

I skimmed it.

I really don't ascribe much importance to it. I remember similar articles where a "significant majority" of developers were supporting the Dreamcast, X-Box, and GameCube.

Plus, it doesn't help that many of these people are regurgitating the hype machine announcements verbatim. I particularly like the lie that only Nintendo games are "pick up and play" and that the only things available for the Playstations are "100 hour extravaganzas that would have made better feature films or anime miniseries."

There are also well reasoned arguments like thise one:

I am buying a Wii because Sony is too arrogant, from their dev tools to the price point.

Wow. Glad it's all about the gaming.

Then you wouldn't be playing very many games. Nobody gets free consoles in the game industry. Companies do, but not personal systems, not even for high-ranking executives. They have to buy systems like anybody else. They can't generally even get preferential treatment on launch day.

I'd also try hard not to show favoritism unless I was trying to make a point by doing so. A "professional" would play all the systems, not just favorites.

Wow, you must be having fun living in fantasyland. Are the rivers made of chocolate and the sidewalks paved with gold there?

That's kinda like saying a professional race car driver would drive all the cars, not just his favorite. Or that a professional chef would use all brands of cutlery. Or that a professional software writer would use all operating systems.

Obviously, the world doesn't work that way. Just because somebody does something for a living doesn't mean he ceases to be a human being and suddenly sees everything in his profession exactly equally. It also doesn't mean he has to continue doing work in his free time. Maybe a "game industry professional" has to work on all the major consoles at various points in time, but that doesn't mean he or she necessarily wants to do it for fun. Working in the game industry also does not make you rich; I don't know too many people who could afford an Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. (Or at least, I don't know many people who could justify that expense.)

When I was at Rockstar, most people only had one console and it was the PS2. We bought them in stores like the rest of the pleebs. A few of us had more than one console; some people had no console at all (they just didn't play games). The CEO had a company PS2, GameCube and Xbox in his office but didn't have his own - he had to play games at work if he wanted to play games. A couple guys camped out when the Xbox was released. I personally waited in line at Toys R Us, even though I worked at Rockstar (I didn't camp out; I waited about 1 hour if I remember right, and had no trouble getting a system).

Anyway, this survey is pretty much bogus - it's a survey of just a few people. I personally know more people still in the industry than this survey interviewed, and my results would be completely different. So you can't extrapolate any real info from this survey; it may or may not reflect the industry feeling as a whole. My feeling, as someone who was part of the industry until about 2 years ago and still maintains plenty of contacts within it, is that it doesn't.

Well I qualify...

Well I have 3 XBOX 360's at home - one of which was supplied by my employer (Lionhead - part of Microsoft Game Studios) - I bought the others at launch out of my own pocket.

I have a pre-order of both other machines (I am UK based these days) - once again out of my own pocket...

A previous employer (EA) offered a refund on the purchase price of ANY ONE console purchased in my first year of my tenure - which was VERY generous.

Of my collegues all own a 360 - many have a Wii pre-order in (all the game designers and producers) - some are planning a PS3 purchase...

Me - I plan to continue to buy and enjoy ALL the new systems for this and every generation of hardware :D

Can you buy me a 360? :)

It'll be a long time before I can actually get one myself.

Uh.. Full-Sail's not a dev. studio guys. :P It's (according to a friend of mine who currently goes there) is a rather masochistic school for those wanting to get into film, digital media, or game design. It can possibly get you into a development studio, but it's not a studio in of itself. :P
