Have a favorite Atari unit?

Recommended Posts

I think if I had to choose, I like the all black 4 switch unit.

It was the first one I ever bought too. :D

I think I bought it in 1991 or 1992. In the summertime.

My favorite unit is the Sears Telegames 6-switcher. It was the first Atari unit I ever laid eyes on and I've always liked the look of it over the Atari brand unit. When I restarted my collection, I sought out the Sears Heavy Sixer. I've also got a Atari 2600A 4-switcher that I keep for parts. What sucks is I need that unit now to replace some chips, but it's buried in my shed somewhere. :(

Darth Vader 6 switcher. Yes a Frankensteins 2600, I took apart a non working Darth Vader console, removed the switch panel, and used it in the light 6 switcher I have with the 6 switch panel installed. Only issue are the extra port holes from the top shell since the 6 switch board uses bottom shell for controller ports and power in.

my fave 2600 is the original big sexy, sears or atari model, not picky. my overall fave piece of atari kit is the xegs, the ultimate attempt at combining console and computer. love the detachable keyboard :-) (and love even more that a pc joystick xtender cord works with it :-) ) a8bit on the couch made easy :-)

Favorite 2600 for nostalgia purposes: Original heavy sixer. I don't actually own one though :(

Favorite 2600 for daily use: 7800 (with Cuttle Cart 2). I use it for gaming and for development.

Favorite overall Atari unit: Atari 800 with GTIA and revision B OS ROM... though the 1200XL runs a close second.

To the guy that likes the XEGS: the detachable keyboard is cool, but it'd be a lot cooler if the start/select/option/reset buttons were on the keyboard instead of the console :(

Favorite system that will play Atari 2600 games: the 7800, especially if it plays the few Activision carts that some 7800s have problems with.

Favorite 2600-only system: the 2600jr. I love the small size and its removable (without opening the unit, that is!) RCA cable. Only problem is that you don't have that little click that lets you know that the cart is all the way in.

Third run 7800 with compatibility mods sitting right there ^^^^. Oh, my bad, you guys can't see it there.

The only thing that would make it better is if all the IC's were socketed like they should be, it had XBoarD and an AV mod.

My new favourite is a Vader that I just picked up. The signal and sounds are clean, the system is clean, and all the carts fit in with none of that silly pushing/modding/cutting the insides to make third party carts fit, and it's 100% compatible with all 2600 software. My second favourite is the Sears Video Arcade II; same as above, plus the cool LED's to let you know what is activated. The third is my original 2600A; it's packed away right now. I like Heavy-Sixers too, but not all the carts fit in easily.

7800 and NES a tie for me. Grew up with both together.

Just wish someone would make a new Atari system that would be able to play 2600, 5200, and 7800 games all together.

Ugh. Difficult choice. Do I go with nostalgia, usefulness, aesthetics, or ...?

I think overall I'd go with the 7800 I purchased in '86, as it's compatible with the problematic Activision carts and the Supercharger, and has the neat but useless expansion port ready to go when someone goes back in time to make a laserdisc attachment. It's a little bit of nostalgia, a whole lot of usefulness, and a little bit of aesthetics.

For first place in nostalgia, I'd go with my original heavy 6-switch model; my first "real" game system (outside of a flaky generic Pong-clone). I learned to play on the thing, learned to solder at the age of 10 or so when the power supply jack became loose, learned the basics of hooking up home theaters by reading and comprehending the switchbox installation instructions, etc.

For first place in aesthetics would be both Lynx models. Took them into work the other day to thrill the new-hire who's into classic games, and we actually drew a little bit of a crowd who thought the systems were modern. They just feel luxurious, large but still portable, bright and clear screens, well-thought-out control ergonomics that allowed vertical, horizontal, left- and right-handed use.

Favorite would have to be a four-switch woodgrain. That's the one my family had when I was a kid. Nothing else is "quite" an Atari VCS/2600 to me.

Four switch Taiwanese Woody. Its the one I got (still have) as a kid. Had/have a Vader too at my Dad's place but not as cool to me.

Oddly, when I first got back into gaming, I used the Vader for a time as my 'system'. My woody is more of a shelf queen :) :lust:

For day to day my Jnr as it is small and easy to have around with all of the other stuff attached to the TV.

For pure aesthetics I'd go for one of my 6-swtich woody's.
