Great....my AV cable is kicking the dust.

Recommended Posts

Was hanging out with friends this weekend, playing Wii and Gears of War for the most part.

Were using Component at 1080i, and after about 15-20 minutes the picture just died. Would still have 5.1 sound. We didn't think anything of it at first, we just restarted the system and it worked. It did it again, so we changed it to 720p, thinking that would help, it didn't. So we switched over to just video with 5.1 sound. Same thing happened.

Got everything home, and set it back up last night. Tried it on 15" HD set I just got, and it seemed to work fine, but only played for around 10 minutes, so I really don't know. This morning, booted up Gears, I GET NOTHING, just sound. Switch to video, get a picture from 1952. Now it isn't working at all in either mode, I just have sound. I am pissed as fuck.

Do you think MS will replace it (I don't have a warranty anymore)? Or am I going to have to pay out the $40 to play my damn games again?

EDIT: Or does anyone think it could be the video card in the system itself?

Sure doesn't sound like the AV cable to me, I think you have a more serious problem with the system.

Yeah its the video card. Took the system with my AV cord to a guy across the street from me. Hooked my up with my AV cord, nothing, tried his, nothing.

Callled Xbox told the lady the problem. Told her everything that I did, and long story short, it is the video card. $139 to fix.

Don't know what I am going to do right now. Get a new system and sell the old one cheap, or get this one fixed.

The one that is broken, I got on June 16th. So any MS service plan is long gone. Who knows, maybe I can get my sister to call them and get it fixed for free, she was able to get my brother-in-laws fix for free (bad motherboard).

I understand that they are fixing for free systems that were made last year. So you might check the manufacturing date. Where did you buy it? If you got it at Costco then you should be able to just return it to them. And if you end up having to pay for the system, I would just buy a new Core system, take your hard drive and wireless controller, and sell your old system for parts on eBay. You might get $100 for it or something. New system means new warranty. You also might consider buying an extended warranty for it if you can get one for $30 or less somewhere.

I just don't know if I would invest in repairing something as prone to failiure as a disc-based gaming system. You could always also keep the broken one around for parts, in case your drive ever fails or anything. You could also buy a broken system off eBay that has a bad drive or something, but that's taking a risk.

You could also just call MS back, tell them it was the a/v cables afterall. They gave you a ticket number, so call and give that info. Then innocently ask about the extended warranty. It will be 30 for a year or 60 for 2 I think. Then add an extended warranty. Then ask lotsa questions about the extended warranty and innocently ask how long do you need to wait to use it. IE: "So if I buy this today and say my PSU dies tomorrow, would it be covered or do I need to wait until a certain point for me to be able to use the extended warranty?" Once you get your answer, then you know what to do. I would at least make it look good and wait a few weeks before making a claim though, just in case.

True, never thought about doing that. Will have to try that tomorrow.

Though I do have one other question, if I were to get a new core 360 can I just use the HDD from the old system?

Will all my game saves and all that good stuff still be there? If that were to happen I really don't want to download all my arcade games/patches again.

Yes, all the stuff will be there if you swap HDs. In fact I simply copied everything off my original HD, and back on to the new one when I finally wore out my launch 360 :D

You should have bought it at BestBuy and got their 2 year replacement plan. When mine died I got another one at no cost (the inital plan was about $50). I did buy a new replacement plan for it though.

Mine kept freezing.
