Here's a compiled game with Batari's suggested change. Hopefully this'll work.

This new version fixes the problem with the flickering, but does not address this issue:

 

- On a six-switch system I tested it on, the octopus never appears, making the game very easy. Also, the exploding sound does not play when you crash into a wall (usually the last sonar note playing just gets stuck there).

Could that be a difficulty switch setting? Chris, how do you select between having the octopus in the game or not?

Yes, it's a difficulty setting--turns out this one system has a BROKEN Left Difficulty switch, stuck in the B position (no octopus) no less. I verified this with a Testcart. If I have time today I will be swapping that switch out, as this is one of my s-video modified systems I am taking with me to the show tomorrow. Sorry for the false alarm as far as that goes!

I had that happen with my S-Video modified Atari too. Luckily I had a spare broken Atari that I was able to swap difficulty switches with.

I put a new switch in and now the game works fine in that six-switch. It was actually stuck in the "A" position, not "B" as I wrote previously.

"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

 

"I don't know."

 

"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

 

"Yes, I think so."

 

"Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

 

"Yes, it is."

 

"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

 

"No."

 

"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

 

"Okay, here it is."

 

"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

 

"I can't reach."

 

"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

 

"No."

 

"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

 

"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle -- it's because it's dark."

 

"Dark?"

 

"Yes, the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

 

"Well, turn on the office light then."

 

"I can't."

 

"No? Why not?"

 

"Because there's a power failure."

 

"A power... A power failure? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

Actually, the "transcription" is a farce. The guy worked at an internal help desk and was very polite to the lady. He later wrote a list of things he wished he could have said, which resulted in the current form of the joke.

 

Of course, the tech later married the poor, clueless, and quite female caller, so I guess there's a silver lining to everything.

I noticed when the right difficulty switch is on A, the PAL colors still show up in the NTSC version. Hopefully it's not too late, because I fixed this.

NOTE: The NTSC version is fine and will be released on-time.

I was play-testing the PAL colors on the NTSC version and noticed the screen flashes, so I've decided to make a seperate PAL version. Is it just my stupid computer or does the screen flash in the later levels in this PAL version?

 

To set up PAL mode in Stella, press Tab, goto Game Properties, click on the display tab and change it from NTSC to PAL (that is, if you're living in the NTSC region, or have Stella on the NTSC TV type.)

Just as an FYI, the latest version of Stella includes PAL auto-detection, so it probably won't even be necessary to do this for PAL ROMs anymore.

Thank you, MausBoy. BTW, I'm beginning to dabble in Oric Basic. I don't think I can release actual games on the Oric, though, which is kinda good because I don't have one (just an emulator.)
