My old Beige Power Mac G3 has a built in ZIP drive that still functions and can even boot the computer. Though I did have an external back in the day that had the click of death. Rusto
I needed one of these in 1984 - now I've got one I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it... polite suggestions welcome...

Unless you have FujiNet, hook up your Atari to the Internet with a Lantronics adapter? Get another and connect two Ataris for your own in-house BBS?

Same happened to me but in 1990... Maybe you can run @warerat firmware checksum program (dl850rom.xex) and discover which 850 firmware version you got, and report back to this topic:

bfollowell
I've been considering picking up a trackball for my 8 & 16-bit Ataris. I'm trying to decide between the Atari Trak-Ball and a Wico Trackball. Are they both pretty good? Does one come more recommended than the other? I don't have the Wico, but I have both Atari Branded Trackballs CX-22 and CX-80 (trak-ball) and I am super happy with both. I really like the look of the CX-80 since it matches the XL line better. On the other hand, I read that Wico does not have "True TB" mode and always emulates joystick... maybe someone can confirm that.
bfollowell
What's a decent going price for a CX-22? It seems like I see them typically going for around $50, at least lately.

Correct, the wico is not a true trackball
manterola
But I would like to put my hands on a Wico one to modify it to be true trackball.. I am almost sure it is possible, and it is a matter of bypassing all logic and just send the (buffered) signals from the phototransistors to the joystick port.

Text below says that the Atari Trackball maybe more reliable.

bfollowell
I was looking for a fun winter project and I finally found one. This poor old, neglected 800XL needs some love! I paid $131.53 with tax and shipping, so I'm sure I paid more than I should have, but it was nice to see a picture of it running and know it's a good machine that just needs a thorough cleaning. It works, so it shouldn't need too much more than a thorough cleaning and maybe a UAV install. Hopefully though, it will help me get my ailing original 800XL up and running. It will be nice to have a working 8-bit again and, it being identical to my ailing machine, it will be good to have this one on the workbench as I troubleshoot my original and try to get it going again, comparing waveforms. etc. I've never done any videos but since this one looks so filthy, maybe I'll do a cleaning/refurb video and show it off before and after. After I get my original 800XL going again, maybe I'll put a U1M in this one, in addition to the UAV, and sell it off to someone that isn't as technically gifted.

That's one grubby machine By the look of it, it's been somewhere very damp, hope the insides are not corroded. I think the price you paid is OK for a known working machine. hueyjones70
I have sold many of these machines and I have always wondered why the seller didn't care enough to at least clean the exterior.
bfollowell
Well, I received my new 800XL Monday afternoon and it's just a filthy in person as it is in the pictures. After I bought it I started worying the it might arrive reeking of cigarette smoke, but it doesn't. It doesn't smell of mold or mildew either, so that is promising. I haven't opened it up yet, but I did give it a good once over. It seems to work perfectly and it passed all tests when I checked out the built-in system tests and with my SysCheck device. I put in my Ultimate Cart and tried various games and everything seems to be working as expected. I probably won't get chance to spend too much time on it for another month or so but I'm looking forward to taking it all apart and giving it a good and thorough restoration. Hopefully, it will help me narrow down the issue with my ailing original 800XL.

Preppie
I've seen that book go for as little as £6 inc postage in uk, generally in the £15 range.
