3rd party games play better than 1st party games on the ColecoVision.

Recommended Posts

Ok is it just me or does 3rd party games(Parker Bros,Epyx, ect.)seem to play better than first party ColecoVision games(Donkey Kong,Space Fury,ect.).I was playing around today with my one working ColecoVision and as normal my screens for Donkey Kong,Space Fury, and Pepper2 were screwed up(lines thru screen)but when i tried out JumpMan Jr.,Gateway to Apshai, and Montezuma's Revenge they fired up right away no problems. My copy of Spectar(Homebrew)never has any problems playing either.I was just wondering about this.I know that the power suppies on ColecoVision's can and will go bad and when they start to you can get garbage on your game screen but if this was the case i would think all my games would do the same thing. So any feedback on this would be great.Thanks.

All those 3rd party games completely bypass the built-in Coleco BIOS. I don't know what else games use the BIOS for besides the CV titles screen and level select screens. My Jaguar was like that. Some games would start right up and other games would give me the red screen over and over, even if it was a new, clean cart.

I'd almost bet that if you measured the cart thicknesses, the Coleco branded ones are thinner, thereby not making as good of contact as the other games.

At least, that is my first thought. :)
