moycon #1 Posted December 11, 2006 (edited) Hey guys, Took the time to scan the video game section of the Sears 1982 Wish Catalog I figure we can all relive those days gone by when we'd sit down with a red pen, drool over all the great new video games and circle what we wanted for Xmas. Good stuff!! Edited December 11, 2006 by moycon
NE146 #2 Posted December 11, 2006 Great! Although I notice it has the video arcade II on there. You sure this is 82? I didnt know that was out by then... Ahh the days when the "expensive" carts were $29.99. Asteroids was notorious to me for being that price But I guess it's a lot better than the standard $59.99 now

Albert #4 Posted December 11, 2006 Wow, great scans, thanks for sharing them! That really takes me back--the Sears Wishbook was a treasure trove of fun, most of which I could only dream about actually receiving under the tree Christmas morning! ..Al
tcv #5 Posted December 12, 2006 This kind of thing was easily half-the-fun of Christmas back then. :-) I also note with a smirk how the screen shots aren't really screen shots at all but drawn representations. Next time someone complains to a developer when the developer uses a FMV cut-scene to represent game play, all the developer has to say is, "Hey, they've been doing that crap since the Atari." NovaXpress #6 Posted December 12, 2006 This book came out around September. Notice that the none of the late-92 releases are included. Sears would then send out monthly supplement catalogs until Xmas. Also note that Super Breakout is no longer labeled as a Sears Exclusive, as it was in the 81 catalog. The Smurf picture is interesting. I don't recall anything that looks particularly like that in RIGC, but that's the game isn't it?

moycon #9 Posted December 12, 2006 It's fun paging through that old catalog. There's lot's of Pac-Man themed stuff in there and tons of LCD video games. Also just think, back in 1982 you could have been the proud owner of a Beta machine for the amazingly low price of $788.00 WOW!

My parents got me Pitfall that year for Christmas. I remember thinking how cool they were for stepping so far out of their comfort zone to go into the videogame section, and to be sure they got me exactly the game they knew I wanted (since there was so much junk that I could have ended up with). I've never forgotten that.
+remowilliams #12 Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Cool, I was thinking of scanning a bunch of pages from the JC Penney '83 catalog here. TI99/Atari 8bit/5200/Colecovision/Adam/Gemeni/2600/INTV/Vectrex. Those were the days! Edited December 12, 2006 by remowilliams

NovaXpress #14 Posted December 12, 2006 Seriously kids, grab any 77-83 catalogs you can find and check for games. If we could nab every Sears/JCP catalog from that era we could answer all the release date questions. If we can find the Sears supplements, we'd even have the exact month of release. The MilkMan #22 Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Wow. The hours I would stare at those magical pages. Dog earred, highlighted, circled, tattered and torn, those WishBooks were the survival tomes that that got me thru the holidays till Christmas morning! Not only the gaming section, but the Star Wars pages didn't stand a chance either. Yes, if there are more or other years availble, please post! moycon #24 Posted December 12, 2006 Ok I started an album since a lot of this stuff has nothing to do with video games. I tried to make the pictures a tad bigger to be sure everyone could read the text if they wish, but I'm thinking the Gallery automatically sets the max image size, so that didn't really pan out. You can check it out here... http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...m&album=151 If you guys can't read the pages let me know and I guess I'll just create a thread somewhere with bigger pics. RJ #25 Posted December 13, 2006 (edited) Moycon- you simply rock. Those catalog pages of Legos, Star Wars, GI Joe & video games are a visual representation of my childhood. Bless you sir! May your luncheon meat never spoil. Edited December 13, 2006 by RJ
