Dragon Quest 9 will be for DS

Recommended Posts

This is unbelievable! I guess the few who have stated that the future of gaming is in handheld devices might be right. And to anyone who thinks 90+ hours of gaming on a handheld won't fly, just think Pokemon.

90+ hours on a handheld is completely doable... it's an RPG...it is supposed to take a fair amount of time to get through.

I could easily burn that much time playing. Does anyone know an estimated US launch?

I got Dragon Warrior/Quest VIII for PS2 for $20 new...

I like the Dragon Quest series myself and I am looking forward to Dragon Quest 9.

Dragon Quest 9 has an online option for 4 players to play online. I thought the psp would the handheld for online gaming not the ds. Square Enix is bringing the game to the ds becayse because Consumers are buying 16,000 to 35,000 psp units a week in Japan and the Ds is selling over 80,000 DS units along with the psp having a difficult time to make on the top 10 games sales in Japan for a week. When a psp game does in Japan, it is for a week or two only.

First was the psp viral marketing blog and videos being exposed and now this. This means the psp could be off the market in a couple years in some places in the world. We all know the psp lost to the ds in hardware and software sales worldwide. The blog shows that sony was desperate for selling the psp and Square Enix knows the psp games doesn't sell great and having a well known series like Dragon Quest would be to much of a risk for Square Enix to bring the Dragon Quest series to the psp.

I am not being fanboy here. I own nintendo and systems systemsNot having a main Dragon Quest game a system means the the psp in not doing well in Japan and the ds is doing well in Japan. The Dragon Quest series also been on a system that is leading in Japan.

It does seems like PSP isn't faring as well as Sony would have liked. I don't have PSP because it's still overpriced, glorified portable video player IMO. The number of games that I do want to buy with PSP I can easily count on one hand so not worth buying it for me.

This will be crazy indeed. The DS Lite it STILL causing lines to form in Japan. Recently when IGN did photos of Wii lines at launch they found huge line, thought for sure it Wii or PS3, turns out it was for a new shipment of Lites. This news is going to make the DSLite go even more insane over there. There's already a law on the books that makes it so they can't allow a DQ game to be released on a work day!

I'm all for a 90+ hour game on the DS! Maybe Nintendo will get a DS cart of each of the previous 1-7 games released in North America. (Sure there was 1+2 and 3 on GameBoy Color but I mean for the DS!) It would be nice to play 5 and 6 for once too.

Nice to see the DS get more love!

This is going to be crazy. A major coup for handheld gaming to be sure

http://ds.ign.com/articles/750/750590p1.html

For Japan, anyway.

Dragon Warrior VIII basically flopped here in North Am.

You're right, of course. When I look at my DQ8 poster that reads, "Four million people have become obsessed," I know that at least 3,997,000 of them were Japanese. It's a fine game, but one that's easy to miss when you've already got The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in your collection.

Still, the effects of this decision will reach across these shores. Now that Square-Enix has put its full weight behind the Nintendo DS with Final Fantasy XIII and Dragon Quest IX, other Japanese developers are sure to follow, resulting in even more great DS games released here in America. The success of the DS hinges entirely on Japanese game development... without it, we'd be stuck with lame superhero fighting games and Nicktoons-licensed platformers.

This is awesome. The perfect platform and a glorious return to Nintendo for the franchise.

Everyone's being a bit hard on the poor PSP though :) I hate Sony as much as...well.. everyone else on Earth, but the PSP is really getting some great titles now, admittedly it took a while.

"It would be nice to play 5 and 6 for once too..."

Um... rip out the cartridge lockout tabs in your SNES, buy the Super Famicom carts... and go find a foreign language faq... at least that's what I did.

All old school solutions aside... it would be cool to see some of the other releases on DS... just 'cause it's DS... I like the idea of being able to take killer games with me more or less where ever I go.

I have all of the home console Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quests... I need to still grab Rocket Slime, and maybe the ones for the Game Boy (I have a Super Game Boy, access to a GBA, and the original brick... so I would have the means to play them relatively easy).

"Horii is aiming for a Japanese release some time in 2007"

Wow... ONLY some random time within the next YEAR??!?!?! Way to estimate there! I wonder how much longer people will have to wait for the US release?

Thought of that over the years but really... it's not for me. I wanna play North American Games in english. (I've tried a Jap title or two over the years and it's not for me).

I'm guessing this will release in Japan around the end of 2007 in Japan and the following fall for North America in 2008.

Yeah that sounds like a fair estimate, but I was making fun of the article in the fact that the estimate given isn't really an estimate. When I start hearing about upcoming titles, they tend to be planned for the next year... so saying "Sometime in 2007" does nothing for the anticipation factor.

Also, I totally understand how imports aren't for everyone. As far as I know there aren't any fan translated ROMs for those games either. No, foreign language faqs don't always cut it either...although as a general rule, the ones you find on gamefaqs aren't too bad.

I only own a handful of Japanese carts myself... and they tend to be games that never saw a North American release (all my systems are NTSC, although when I was younger we had multi-region TVs and VCRs since we were military), otherwise, I would rather play the game in my native language... just you know... easier that way, and tends to make more sense. Which is why I would totally be down for some rereleases of titles that didn't hit the North American region/continent the first time around.

There are translated roms out for both DQ V and DQ VI. I've only played the first few hours of V myself, but from what I've played it, the dialogue made sense. Now since I don't know Japanese, I don't know how well they are translated.

Mention of the word Dragon Quest makes my heart race! Of course you can tell as my name is Metal Slime!

The idea of IX being released on the DS is a great idea to me, especially since I've heard rumors that imported DS games will play in American DS systems. If this is true I'll order the Jap version. Since I'm becoming pretty good with Japanese this will be jind of neat.

I like this because this means I don't have to rush out and buy a Wii or a PS3 to play the latest Dragon Quest.

I just hope they make it more like the old school NES/SNES games. That would be sweet!

I have played the roms for DQ V and VI with translation, and though the English is kind of choppy, you can follow it just fine. I think the translation for V is better than VI.

What I want to see is a translation for DQ 1,II and III remix. They exist but aren't finished, and it doesn't seem as though anyone is actively working on finishing the project. Since DQ III is my favorite DQ of all time, the idea of a new version with enhanced graphics and an added dungeon makes my mouth water.

With roms, I have all of the DQ games made so far, including the DQ Monsters games and Rocket Slime for the DS.

If the work done for future DQ games follows the superb work done with Rocket Slime, then the future of DQ on the DS in North America will be awesome!

Some of the DQVII stuff could have been polished a bit more. It makes for fun reading sometime though. :)

I'm excited to hear that I won't need a PS3 now. Admittedly, I buy the consoles that Dragon Quest comes out for. It is one of the most important games for me.

Yeah, the DS isn't region locked, neither is the GBA...I know guys who have import titles for those things. So there ARE fan translations of DQ V and VI? Neat... I'll have to find them... they wouldn't be illegal as far as that end goes... I own the games. Neat.

I DON'T have DW/DQ Monsters, though I wish I did. Those were Game Boy Color?

DW/DQ Monsters 1 and 2 are on GBC, but there was also a GBA DQ Monsters game, Caravan Hearts, that didn't make it to the US. As for imports, I usually stick to shooters, action games, and games that don't have much text, but I have made exceptions like Super Robot Taisen J (which I have played by memorizing the menus and a slight bit of help from gamefaqs).

Graphics look pretty clean. Of course, graphics DON'T make a game, they are icing on the cake. But in all honesty, DW/DQ has not disappointed me yet. I'm holding out for this one!

I can't believe it's not selling that well in NA, how many did they sell? I just beat Rapthorne for the first ime and it's 100 hours, OK, that extra 10 was from getting 500K tokens to get best weapons in Baccarat and some alchemy mixings for the best weapons. This shows how much depth the game has.

Perhaps it's the traditional graphics that didn't lure gamers, unlike Final Fantasy, which IMO is overrated and I've stopped playing after VII. I certainly hope they maintain the same type of graphics (anime styple, cel-shaded) and game play (menu-based).
