Interesting PS2 problem with PS1 games

Recommended Posts

I may be having my first problem with my PS2. But, it's a very strange and interesting problem.

Recently, I got component cables for my PS2. Since then, I haven't played my PS1 games. However, I'm certain that I have loaded the PS1 Namco Museum Vol 1 in order to expose a friend to the horrors of ToyPop. So, that game at least once worked properly through component cables on my HDTV.

Today I acquired Mobile Light Force for the PS1 for $3. I popped in the disc, the familiar Playstation 1 screen appeared, it flashed once, and then...

Well, the game is loading and running. I know this because I can hear the audio of the opening cinematics and I can start games. The catch is that I'm not getting any video. As far as the video is concerned, most PS1 games are locking up at the PS1 logo screen.

So far, I've tested Mobile Light Force, Front Mission 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Qix Neo, and Namco Museum Vol 1. All do basically the same thing. Front Mission 3 provides a mild exception by actually showing the game title screen, but once FMVs begin to play or you start the game, the screen goes black.

The neat thing? Playstation 2 games play without any problem. Also, if I switch back to regular AV cables, all the above PS1 games play flawlessly. (All the PS1 games I own are known to work fine on my PS2, except for Tactics Ogre, which only ever saves properly on Japanese Sony memory cards, even on a PS1. Memory cards seem to be regionally locked on the PS2.)

I can't really think of anything that has changed other than the move from regular RCA cables to component.

Constructive thoughts?

I've never hooked up component cables to my PS2, but you have to tell it that you are using component output. Maybe when doing this, the PS1 games won't output to the TV. Also, in the owners manual (which I'm looking at right now) under notes for connecting to a TV, it says this product is not compatible with HDTV format component inputs (pg. 13 in my manual). Maybe this is the problem.

Check. I figured that part out the hard way a few weeks ago. :D

That sounds like a winner. I guess if I want to play PS1 games, I'll either have to stick to the old style cables, or hook up a PSOne I keep as a spare.

Actually, that's good. It gives me an excuse to play Tactics Ogre again.

Sounds like a plan. The PS2 barely made any good use of the component cables, so that leaves the PS1 in the dark :P :D

Could just use s-video cables. Not really a lot of advantage to component until you get past 480i, and the PS2 doesn't do progressive scan very often.

But still... real PS1 > PS2 trying to be backwards-compatible.

And PS1 games look like crap once you get off composite anyways.
