Question about a adaptor for handheld game

Recommended Posts

i was wondering if this adaptor would work with this handheld game controller

i got it with my polaroid portable dvd player but if i want to use it i have to hook up the dvd player everytime

i was wondering if this adaptor would work in changing the 3.5mm plug to an RCA plug so i can use it on my TV with no dvd player, the name of the pic is what was listed as on a website i checked

3.5mm mono jack to RCA type pin plug. Shielded. Nickel plated

It SHOULD, unless they don't use the standard ground/signal orientation on the connector.

But you'll only get mono sound(does that thing even do stereo, or just route mono to both sides?).

hey JB thanks for the reply

im not sure about stereo or mono ( the dvd player is already Regifted to someone and under the XmasTree)

but im not really worried about the sound being in mono as long as there is sound and video when its plugged in

there is only 30 cheesy games on it but a few are addicting :)

the manual says just plug it into your TVs AV jacks but it didnt come with any adaptor of anykind, the only 3.5mm jacks i remember on TVs were for Head/Earphones

it also doesnt say anything about hooking it up to the dvd player in either manual

i have many connectors for things but i never thought i would be looking for something like this, i didnt think i would find anything close to it actually

the adaptor in the pic is only like $1.88 online, im gonna hit radio shack tomorrow to see if they have something like it to test out, since the thing takes batteries only (3 AA) to power up i can take it with me and test it on their TVs

i thought about that after i posted this :D

In the picture of the game controller, it looks like the yellow plug is 2-conductor (yellow is the standard color for composite video). That should work perfectly with the adapter you show. However, the other plug is 3-conductor, which implies that it's for stereo audio. If you use the same type of adapter: 1. You will only have one channel of the game's sound go to one channel on your TV, and 2. The other channel of the game's sound will be shorted out, which could kill that channel.

EDIT: On searching the Radio Shack website, it seems that they have a product looking very similar to the adapter you show, which is stereo on the 1/8 inch phone jack side, but of course mono on the RCA phono plug side (#274-0387). This type of adapter would work with your audio connection, but not the video! So, if you already have the adapter that you show, you need to know exactly which type it is before we can tell you which plug it will work best with. If you can't tell, try it with a stereo system output phono jack and headphones. If you hear sound in both sides of the headphones, use it with your game's red plug. If only one side gets sound, use it with the yellow plug.

For the red plug, a better idea would be to find an adapter that takes a stereo 1/8 inch phone plug and splits it via a short "Y" cable into two RCA plugs with the usual red=right, white=left stereo color code. Unfortunately, Radio Shack doesn't seem to have such a thing with a female 1/8 inch phone jack. They do have one in the 1/4 inch size (#42-2548), which could work with a 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch adapter to do what you want. But before I'd go to the trouble of stacking adapters like that, I'd consider cutting off those silly non-standard plugs from the game and putting on the right ones! You'll probably want to find a stereo RCA phono plug Y-adapter to cut and splice onto the audio cable, though. Even better if you can find one with a plug, opposite from the two phono plugs, that comes apart to make the connection easier.
