Red 5 #1 Posted December 22, 2006 Was finally luck enough to add this to my collection. Does anyone have any idea just how many we are talking about? Since it was the same kind of deal as 'Chase the Chuckwagon' why is this one considered more rare? (Is is simply because CTC was made by a company that made carts.?) There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on Tooth Protectors (here or w/ Google searches) that I can find. Any info would be appreciated.
homerwannabee #2 Posted December 22, 2006 I would say that not more than 25,000 were made of this game. One basic Standard for a rare game is how often it shows up compared to Quadrun. Quadrun had a stated print run of 10,000. It seems to me that this game shows up 2 to 3 times as often as Quadrun. 2.5 times 10,000 and viola I get 25,000. Q x A = Total # of carts made where Q = Quadrun and A is the variable consisting of the Atari cart of your choice on Ebay.
PressureCooker2600 #4 Posted December 22, 2006 alright.....homerwannabe made the official rarity gauge.... we'll call it the Quadrun Theory
homerwannabee #5 Posted December 22, 2006 (edited) alright.....homerwannabe made the official rarity gauge.... we'll call it the Quadrun Theory Cool, I like the name of the Theory Also, one thing has to be mentioned. This theory is only good for items in the $25 to $1,000 range. There are several factors that change the variability of items outside this range. For items under $25 it is not enough of an incentive to actually sell stuff on Ebay. For items over $1,000 it becomes too much of an incentive to sell stuff on Ebay. Foxsolo2000 #6 Posted December 22, 2006 25,000 sounds a lot for a mail away game. I woudl disagree with the theory that it is more common that Quadran though for in all my years on Ebay I have only seen two Tooth Protectors (one of which I got) but I have seen a dozen Quadrans including two boxed. I'd like to think it was that extremely rare (especially now that I own it), but I have seen it quite a bit recently. Here are three in the last few weeks... http://cgi.ebay.com/Atari-Tooth-Protectors...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Extremely-Rare-Atari-T...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ATARI-2600-games-TOOTH...VQQcmdZViewItem

There were actually 3 tooth protectors that were up for sale in the last 3 weeks alone. I think you just notice quadrun more because usually it is always in the top 5 items being sold on Ebay. Tooth protectors on the other hand it sometimes buried in the second page.
A.J. Franzman #11 Posted December 23, 2006 IMO, though it's nice to know the tally of how many Quadrun carts were produced, it's a bad choice upon which to base a rarity scale. It has erroneously been termed the rarest Atari cartridge, and this bit of false info has filtered out to the non-Atari-fan public by being repeated by several popular sources. The effect of this misinformation is that many more Quadruns get sold and resold on eBay and other venues than they otherwise would, making other rare cartridges seem to be even more rare than they really are by comparison. +Omegamatrix #12 Posted December 24, 2006 I too think Tooth Protectors is less rare (but not a huge amount) then Quadrun. Atari2600.com usually has a few for sale at any given time. The going price for the original packing foam that Tooth Protectors came in is ridiculous.

I always thought that Crazy Climber was rarer than Quadran or is it more common? On ebay there alwats seems to be less Crazy Climbers than Quadrans but who knows? I try not to think about it, having sold mine (with the foam box) many years ago... heh Not beatin' myself up TOO much though, cuz I got what I considered to be a fair amount. But still... it'd be nice to see her again. :-)
Dino #15 Posted February 21, 2007 Tooth Protectors is not too common. I would say it has a rarity of 7/10 on my personal scale. It would be in the company of Bumper Bash, Chase the Chuck Wagon, Death Trap, Glib and a whole heap of other R10s, R9s and R8s.
Crazy Climber #16 Posted February 21, 2007 I remember years ago Tooth Protectors used to score a few hundred on Ebay. I thought it was the rarest Atari game made until I found this place It seems to average about $75 these days.
graywest #17 Posted February 21, 2007 I know one thing - I'd pay a lot more for a copy of Tooth Protectors than I'd pay for Chase the Chuckwagon, because Tooth Protectors is actually fun to play. It's too bad that DSD-Camelot (whoever they were) didn't make any other 2600 games, because Tooth Protectors has nice big characters, good gameplay and a level of polish that a lot of commercially released games didn't have. Crazy Climber #18 Posted February 22, 2007 I have to admit I kind of like Chase the Chuckwagon, I know it's a shitty game but for some reason I like it.
