A welcome return to the Arcades this week!

Recommended Posts

On a bit of advice, I stopped by this roller rink (I can't skate at all, mind you), and I felt my eyes grow bigger when I saw the arcades they had there. Among two pinball machines, a pool table, a hockey fooseball type table, and an air hockey table (which I kicked butt on), they had:

-Heavy Barrel

-Jr. Pac-Man

-Operation Thunderbolt

-Galaxian

-Area 51

-Crime City

-Fatal Fury/Samurai Showdown (it was a NEO GEO)

-Rough Rangers

-Street Smart

-P.O.W (which ate my flippin' quarter)

-A Ninetndo Playchoice 10 with: Double Dragon, TMNT, Pinbot, SMB 3, Ninja Gaiden, and probably a few others (this one also ate my flippin' quarter, and I was mad as BLEEP when I couldn't show off my Double Dragon skills!)

-One of those claw grabber games where you can play till you win (I wasted more quarters than should be allowed in this one, as well. I did get a pack of Go Fish cards, though. Hurrah!)

Among a few others. It was a good day for me, I got to see all the great Coin-ops again. Still mad I couldn't play NES Double Dragon, but that's life.

So why am I posting this? Well, for one simple question: Anyone else here have a place to go to relive great memories?

PS-for the record, I also go to an even better place that has a party room FULL of classic arcades.

Well if you are ever in Seattle....... You need to check out GameWorks, it is in downtown Seattle........ I am not kidding there is like 200+ or more Old School and Modern Arcade games not to mention pool, and a resturant/bar. :) :D :| :lust:

There are several Nickel Citys in San Diego. I haven't been in awhile but last time I was there, games like Joust and Dig Dug are free play. Most games are a nickel per play. The newest games are 2-4 nickels. There's a cover charge to get in. Like $3-$4.

There's also Dave & Busters which is a complete rip-off. Mostly only new games though. I like playing the VS basketball hoop games there though.

I went to the GameWorks in Las Vegas last year and wasn't very impressed with it. Only a tiny area with a few classic games lined up, maybe 6 - 8 machines, and they were all miniature cabinets (which I had never seen before). Needless to say, I was disappointed, having heard in the past that GameWorks arcades had lots of classic arcade games. I assume the one in Seattle is much better. :)

If you're in Seattle I'm sure you heard of Hi-Score Arcade right? It's the place that had TONS of classic arcade games from Space Invaders on down. Gameworks had nothing on it with their crappy cabaret cabinets, nope Hi-Score had 100% original cabinets in all their glory. It also had a nice row of Electromechanical Pinballs. And best of all they had the annual ATARI 2600 Championship Tournament! http://www.intensegames.com/photos/atari/

Unfortunately they closed just last October due to Landlord issues, but according to the owners, they hope to be back someday! So cross your fingers :)

Yeah, they opened a Dave & Busters here in Austin two years ago or so, and while it was cool at first, I quickly grew tired of it. They rarely get any new games, and the ones they do are usually of the variety I could care less about ("Oh Boy! Another Fighting Game!") Not to mention their prices are ridiculous. They have no classic games at all, mostly big, expensive racing games, lots of fighting games, many "environmental" games (like that new boxing game that senses your real-life punches and moving), lots of shooting games, and of course a million games of you-haven't-got-a-chance.

They do have the Williams Pinball 2K machines. :)

The last arcade place to go to that I know of around the down river area of Micigan is a place in Taylor called the Red Barron arcade room on Telegraph Road, but now a days the only have a few classic arcade games like Pac-man and Galaga.

:ponder: :ponder:

Red Baron is kinda weak, which is why I rarely go there. We have a Tilts in Southland that sucks. Basically, all the good close by arcades closed, save for like, Wizzards.

I've only been to two Arcades my entire life..... the first one I went to had nothing but new machines (at least in 1998) and everything costed about $.50 to $1 to play....I only went there once...it was because I got a gift certificate....

The other Arcade I've been to is a little closer to home.....(I don't really know exactly where it is...I've only gone there with friends and never really payed much attention on the way) It's called Nickle's arcade and all they have are old Arcade machines... I was a little dissapointed when I found out they didn't have Rampage(which I've only played on emulation so far). As the name suggests, the machines have been set to take nickles instead of quarters.. there's a fee to enter and a few machines in back that are on freeplay.. It's somewhere within a half-hour of Kent, WA.

I am fairly lucky I guess... about 30-45 minutes from where I live (Rockville MD) there is a cool classic arcade (in Glen Burnie MD). They have many of my favorites and other games I consider rare (Make Trax, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Mario Bros., Track and Field, Baby Pacman, ...)

However now that I have discovered MAME I can play most of these classic games and more at home (now I just need to buy a joystick). MAME is a godsend!

Did you know Disney World has a classic arcade! It is in downtown Disney in DisneyQuest. I think it is the third floor. It has a sign that says classic corner or something and it probably has 20 games. The price to enter DisneyQuest is steep, but there is tons of other stuff to do in the complex and all games are free play. I was in heaven for a couple hours when I first found it.

Although that gives me a reason to go to DisneyLand, I think I'll pass on it. If that mouse came up and hugged me, I'm afraid I punch him. When I think about it, it's not worth the chance of getting arrested :D :D :D .

If it's classic games you're after, you must make it a point to visit FUNSPOT in Weirs Beach, NH. They essentially specialize in nothing but classic games, though there are a few modern games like Daytona 2 and Police Trainer.
