The Atari Jaguar Rotary Controller will allow you to use a rotary knob with Atari Jaguar games that have built-in support for rotary controllers. This rotary controller starts life as a new Atari Jaguar controller, and the dpad on the left side of the controller is replaced with a high-quality, heavy, metal rotary knob. The rotary is buttery smooth and is perfect for enjoying games like Tempest 2000 and Rebooteroids. A complete list of games that include rotary support is below.
If you're a fan of Tempest 2000, then you know it was meant to be played with a rotary controller. With a rotary controller, you can zip around the edges of the tube with a speed and finesse that cannot be matched with a dpad! Can you imagine playing the arcade game Tempest using a joystick or buttons to move left and right? Neither can we!
If you want to retain use of the dpad on your controller, we also have a rotary controller that has the rotary on the back side of the controller.
Games with Rotary Support
Only Tempest 2000 includes rotary support from the original Jaguar library. However, several homebrew games have included rotary support. Here's a list of games we know that include rotary support. If you know of a game that has rotary support and it's not on this list, please let us know, and we'll add it!
- Arkanoid (ST Port)
- Impulse X
- Kaboom (In Development)
- Kobayashi Maru
- Project W (Warlords)
- Tempest 2000
- Virtual Xperience's Pong
Unfortunately, the game Breakout 2000 does not include rotary support.
To enable rotary support in Tempest 2000, please perform the following steps:
- Plug your rotary controller and another controller into the Jaguar.
- While on the title screen, press "B".
- Press "OPTION" to enter the Options screen.
- Simultaneously press "PAUSE" on both controllers.
- At this point you should see a third menu choice called "CONTROLLER TYPE".
- Select "CONTROLLER TYPE" and press "B" to enter the Rotary Selection screen.
- You can now select which port you have plugged your rotary controller into.
Once you've enabled rotary support in Tempest 2000, the game will remember that you've done so and the "Controller Type" option will be visible in the "Game Options" menu in the future.
