Evening Bubsy fans!

So this is where I stop into YouTube to see what new stuff is going on with Bubsy this month. Years from now it will be probably videos that used to be there. First off wasn't the New Horizons past Pluto a blast last month? Loved it.

Ok, so what kinda of activities are we seeing with Bubsy this month?

Well a lot of reviews, which are basically people

Yawn.

But according to Vinesauce Vinny who was extra busy making reviews both the Bubsy 3D and the Bubsy 3D museum game;

Bubsy for charity. Yeh, that is a new one.
There was a cute video made with Source Filmaker that had Mario and Luigi from Vinny's video linked above.



We also have people making Bubsy animations, or at least that is what they are calling it. I will not be featuring the animations when they are made because they look nothing like Bubsy.

But some more interesting entries are people doing speed runs of Bubsy in Sonic 2. A month or so back we featured this hack of Sonic 2, and I have played it a lot, I think I got about three or four levels in. Bubsy is more fragile than ever in this by design (and a joke). I have mentioned to programmers that Bubsy is not so fragile, but they decided to leave it as is. Despite this, whoever played this speed run did a very good job:

This is the first I've heard of this possible title and there is literally nothing else in the searches out there. Still, interesting. Someone is at least dreaming of another Bubsy. For all you fans out there that want to see another Bubsy game, I don't envy the programmer who tries to make that happen. I think Bubsy is infamous for one. Yes, many would flock to get the next game, and I think they would almost be disappointed if the game was good.

But it is all in the delivery. So here is what I like about all the Bubsy games out there (and don't like) for all game developers

Bubsy 1 (like) colorful, whimsical, well put together. (Dislike) Not much.
Bubsy 2 (like) creative additions, power ups. (Dislike) Gravity engine in game stunted gliding.
Bubsy FFT(like) Zippy, colorful, good mod music (Dislike) Not as polished feeling as Bubsy 1.
Bubsy 3D (like) The Gliding. (Dislike) The turning.
Bubsy JTE(like) The flying, multiplayer. (Dislike) Turning into the creepy man in ending.

And then you have the Sonic 2 hack which just shows what Bubsy would be like with Sonic elements.

What makes Bubsy fun? What would I like to see if Bubsy was revisited?

Well, to me with Bubsy was definitely a product of his time, also comes to mind, along with , , , and .

If you follow all those links I just provided here is what I learned from them that would benefit Bubsy:

1) Leisure Suit Larry: If you have to be lame, flant it. I always felt Bubsy had the same level of lame that Leisure Suit Larry has going on. Bubsy is all that, but just take away all the womanizing, which would leave Leisure Suit Larry with essentially nothing. But love how Leisure Suit Larry flants it (and I think Bubsy already flants it).

2) Sam & Max: So what we learn from this, be in his own world and love it. Maybe his "sidekick" Arnold can be more on par with Bubsy this time like Sam & Max to give Bubsy someone crazy to join his adventures. I really liked that character dynamic in Sam & Max.

3) The Tick: Delusions of grandeur Bubsy already has in spades. I have seen depictions of Bubsy older and worn out, or where he lost that edge, grew up, etc. Nah, Bubsy needs to remain as oblivious as ever. It is what he does best.

4) Freakazoid - I'll admit, I didn't follow this so much. Maybe an example of too much crazy, which granted the Bubsy pilot did that as well.

5) Animamanics I actually learned two things:
a) Ron Paulson needs to be the voice. Hearing him as Yakko tells me Bubsy could tone it down a bit and be fun, witty, and sarcastic all in one. And I think Bubsy is best when he is not so much sarcastic, just his usual delusions of grandeur.
b) Nostalia Critic mentions that misery is good comedy when he was talking about Sam & Max verses Animaniacs. Misery was tried with poor Arnold in the Bubsy pilot, with this you have two scenarios:
1. Bubsy in the games is all about misery done to him, being somewhat fragile, and yet coming out ahead in the end. That didn't seem to win people over though. So...
2. You have a comedy with Arnold and Bubsy like Sam & Max where they go into their own mayhem.

So how about we learn from the Animaniacs: Have Arnold and Bubsy, maybe even the twins as a comedy two-some or four-some and then bring in some misery of the villian and other characters you have to take out. The Villians could be the straight man, and then show some misery as Bubsy "humbles them". You get a little bit of that in Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales with level 9 when you "humble" the Genie, with greater graphics you could add more comedy.

And again, Bubsy 3D tried the misery angle, but at Bubsy's expense. But we are supposed to like Bubsy as the hero so that didn't work. So have Bubsy (and Arnold) bring some misery to the villians.

Lastly, there was a review of Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales. I'm always amazed when someone reviews this game 1) because it is my fav 2) most don't have Atari Jaguars so this game is often forgotten.
In the end I think they did much better than other reviewers. Hell, took me a few days to figure out what they did in a few tries. Very impressed. And certainly played it better than when the Angry Video Game Nerd tried it. Bravo guys!
