Fallout

Hi there!

Interplaying Fallout (1997):

It's been quite a while since the last Interplaying article. First I sunk a lot of time into getting Waterworld to work on my computer and when I finally got it working on my wifes new ThinkPad, it felt rather boring. Similar story with MDK: I remember liking it in the past, but these days definitely not so much that I could actually imagine playing completely through it.

So Fallout is it now! Believe it or not, but I never played it before :o I (very) vaguely remember checking out a demo of it that was on a Power Play cover disk around the time it was released, but for reasons I can't remember I never bought it. Probably some sort of shiny object syndrome - I bet I was busy with a lot of other games at the time...

After some preparation over the weekend (Reading the 120 page manual, trying the tutorial chapter, creating a character), I spent the whole evening playing Fallout, getting totally sucked into this post nuclear world (Yay! I love turn based combat!). After starting it around 17:00 it was already well past midnight the next time I realized my real world surroundings, so it was way too late already to still write an entry

The game has come quite a long way from the days of Wasteland, with great audio-visuals and fantastic gameplay systems: The UI, the skills system, the combat system, the story presentation, navigation within the game world, everything in this RPG has been totally fun so far!

The character I made is some sort of a Science Cowboy, with high Intelligence and Agility values, but also high skills at Outdoor survival and Handguns. Of course, after playing the whole night I now know I made a couple of mistakes with my character, e.g. I should've upped his Agility to maximum so that he could shoot twice in each combat round, but well, I'm making progress anyway :)

The story starts with a simple task: You're supposed to find a replacement water-chip for your vault and you have 150 days to accomplish that. The plan was to go to a neighbouring vault and get it from there, but it was completely destroyed when I found it. After some smaller missions in a little village called "Shady Sands" I'm now starting in a town called "Junktown".

It seems there's like 3 rivaling fractions in this town: Some kind of Sheriff, a punk gang and a casino boss. Somewhat unfortunately, during my first visit of the casino boss some discussion went a bit out of control end I ended up killing him within the first half an hour I was in the town. I bet that wasn't the "best" solution for this bit, but well, I'll see how the story continues now tonight :lolblue:

Version Played: Download from GoG.

How to Run: It runs absolutely fine on my system.

IP Status: Interplay sold the IP to Bethesda Softworks.

Greetings,

Manuel

Oh dear, I think I manged to screw up almost every single quest in "Junktown" :D

I couldn't manage to end one of the quests, so by looking it up in gamefaqs I realized that I practically didn't figure out the "correct" path of most of the story bits, by either having a bad timing of things, doing stuff in the wrong order or by just failing them generally.

Thank heavens at least it looks like I didn't do anything game breaking so far! :D

Lets hope the story/script designer of the next part (a location called "Hub") did think more like me and designed his part accordingly :D

Okay, okay. I considered continuing to play with that unfinished quest for a while, but ultimately I'm too much of a perfectionist to let this slip. So today I started with an older save game, completely replaying the whole "Junktown" bit. Knowing what to do this time, I wasted less than an hour for this :D

Back to "The Hub", I first spent a lot of time wandering through the city. If it wasn't for two smaller sub-quests with some action, this would've been a pretty boring experience. But so I at least finished of a gang of raiders and some very big monster. Still, I'd really love to see some bigger dungeon with a lot of monster to fight by now :D

I organized a caravan transporting water to my vault, so I won some more time for the main quest of finding a replacement water chip. I got some clues regarding a nearby third vault, so I decided to try and find that next.

And it got very interesting in Nekropolis! In fact so interesting, that I almost missed tonights Heroes episode! :D

Nekropolis finally is a really dangerous place, with ghouls lurking on every corner. There's a lot of fights and I also like the story for this bit so far: I decided to help a smaller and friendlier ghoul tribe survive against a dominating and more evil ghoul group.

Right now I'm fighting a group of some kind of heavily armed super-ghouls, which is a very tough battle. I hope I can make it tomorrow!

Tonight I finished most of "Nekropolis", where I finally found a water chip! Too bad that besides rescuing my vault my reports of "mutants" scared my boss a lot, so that he sent me straight off to my next mission, finding out what's going on there.

I ended up in post apocalyptic Los Angeles, again getting thrown between several rivaling fractions. And again I had a quest getting corrupted - there's a surprising lot of bugs in this game... :D

Anyway, even when this already was the fifth day where I usually bail out and end my articles, I decided to play it at least for another day: I'm having way too much fun to stop right now! :D

Phew, free at last! After sinking almost the complete weekend into Fallout, I finally beat it! What a fantastic game, by far the best game featured in the Interplaying series so far. Everyone should absolutely experience it at least once in his live :D

A word of advice if you're going to play it though: Install the latest fan made patch, it corrects hundreds of bugs. I experienced a lot of them, albeit nothing really game breaking. I bet it's a lot more enjoyable that way and I wish I had known about it earlier. You can get it here: http://teamx.ru/node/297

For some unrelated Interplay news: While Interplay canceled Earthworm Jim and actually didn't release anything at all for WiiWare so far, they recently announced MDK2 for the service :D :D

Watch this space for "Descent to Undermountain", the next game I'll be Interplaying!
