Coconuts (Telesys)

Telesys wasn't known for making very good games, their quality was hit or miss at the best of times. Coconuts unfortunately is a big 'ol miss, in more ways than one. This game takes a similar concept to Telesys' other smash hit game, Fast Food and tweaks it a little, I'll get to that in the game-play section, since I feel this review may be lacking some length to it, at least in the long run. Oh... and don't expect me to review extremely rare and expensive games, like Demolition Herby, or Ram it, or Mangia, I will only review what I own, nothing else. I know nobody was asking but I feel I should address this in a way that people will probably end up missing and still ask me about anyway. But... how's abouts those graphics.

Stellar... Would be a word I'd use to describe this game's graphics. The quality would put some NES games to shame, but the main problem is that there aren't that many graphics. Let me clarify, there are two palm trees, a monkey, a man, a hat, an umbrella, and a coconut, that's it... that's all the graphics you're getting in this game. The background is solid black which is a real shame, if you ask me they could have put a real nice star-field in there (Coconuts in space... I like it), just something would be nice. They could have just stolen the horizon from Barnstorming and the game would have been made like eleven times better, since the graphics are the only thing this game has going for it, since the sounds and game-play are a stark opposite to graphics.

Sounds? Where? Oh you mean that clicking noise? Those are your footsteps, and that little krshing noise? That's the monkey! You also get a four note jingle when you get hit by a coconut, and a wierd scrambled mess of noise when you get 500 points. That's all folks! Think I'm makin' this up then play the game for yourself.

Game-play... remember when I referenced Fast Food earlier in the review? Take that game's game-play, remove the food, replace the purple pickles with coconuts, and flip it so it's vertical and BOOM!! BRAND NEW GAME!!! The monkey teleports around the top of the screen dropping coconuts on your head and you avoid them... that's it, the monkey gets more and more spasmatic as you get more points, and the coconuts drop faster as well. If you get hit one of your protective items is lost, first you have your umbrella, then your helmet, then it's your bare head, and when that gets hit its game over. Unlike other games of this style, Kaboom!, Eggomania, heck even Beat 'em & Eat 'em, Coconuts doesn't use the paddle controllers. You're stuck with a regular joystick which means you have no fluid control and that leads to stale and repetitive game-play in just a few minutes.

This game is reverse Kaboom! with half the control and double the graphics. While it is fun for the first few minutes, you'll bore quickly and put it down permanently. I would recommend only collectors go after any Telesys games, perhaps with the exception of fast food, I keep coming back to that one for some reason.
