    • I suppose that if you are filling the top row with empty cards that are the same colour as the border, you wouldn't need to extend the border to cover the shift.  In that case, you still need to print the top row as soon as possible after the WAIT, like @nanochess mentioned, in order to "beat" the STIC buffering of the BACKTAB data.  (See below for an explanation of why this is important.)   A few key points to keep in mind: The fine-grain scroll mechanism actually shifts the screen display downwards (or in whichever direction you are scrolling).  It literally delays the output of the top row by a number of raster lines.  The end result is that the border itself (i.e., the nothingness surrounding the actual visible screen display area) is extended:  The raster beam will continue rendering the same line of pixels until the delay is fulfilled.   Smoothly scrolling a full row involves shifting the screen one pixel at a time 7 times, then resetting it back to the top on the 8th while copying all screen rows downwards.  This needs to happen fast and following the WAIT closely, so that the full screen is shifted before the STIC completes the buffering of the frame.   If you hide the top row with a border extension, you can focus on doing the screen copy first (which is time-critical), while leaving the top row as is.  Because it is hidden, nobody will see that it is now a duplicate of the 2nd row.  After the screen copy completes, you can print the top row, so that it is ready to appear one pixel at a time when you start shifting the screen again on the next frame.  This is the typical way to scroll and what the SCROLL command expects:  The third argument lets it copy the full screen one row or column as soon as possible, as fast as possible.   If you do not hide the border extension, you are forced to print the top row first -- there may not be time to do it after the full screen copy is done; that is, if you want to make it in the same frame.  This not only makes your timing more critical, it gives less time for the actual screen copy to occur.  It also means that the SCROLL command automatic screen copy will not help you, which means that you will have to copy the full screen yourself (e.g., using SCREEN or something like that), which will add delay and potentially result in screen shearing or tearing.   After the vertical-blanking (VBLANK) interrupt (which is what the WAIT command is, er, waiting for), there is a brief period in which the CPU has access to the STIC registers to update MOBs and SCROLL information, and to GRAM to update graphics.  Right after this period (VBLANK Period), the STIC starts copying data from the BACKTAB one row at a time, from top to bottom.  For smooth screen animation and scrolling, where the goal is to update all background elements within the same frame, you must make sure that anything that you PRINT or SCREEN to the BACKTAB is done before the STIC gets to read it.  You do not have to beat the STIC's full screen buffering -- all you need to do is beat it to each row.  This is why it is so crucial to start copying data from the top early on after a new frame starts:  As long as you beat it to the first row, you can stay ahead of it.  This is also the reason why it may not work to shift the full screen and then cycle back to PRINT the top row -- by then it may already be too late for it, and your screen will "tear."   I hope the above offers some insight into how the graphics sub-system works in the Intellivision.  I know that understanding what is going on under the hood helps me write games that take advantage of the strengths of the platform while working around its limitations.   Ask any questions!        -dZ.

    • There are obviously a few catch cases, for instance, if you move right and all of a sudden receive a huge negative delta, you'll have to detect that and apply the previous positive value as negative and slightly decreased (braking).   Also, I would suggest using fixed point values, easiest is obviously 8:8 and it will make it more tweakable and smoother.
    • Oh wow... this is probably the most I've ever seen from the same owner. I'm impressed!
