      Audio Troubleshooting Story

So, the sound on my laptop computer was too low.  I checked all the audio settings in Windows 11, checked for updates, checked audio drivers.  I normally use earphones, I tried another known good set of earphones.  The audio was still too low.  It was frustrating.  I just couldn't figure out why the audio on my laptop was too low.  Then I found the reason!

Can you guess what it was?  Open the spoiler to see the solution!

      1. r_chase

Wow, I did not expect that. Eww.

      3. x=usr(1536)

I'm in a loaner car right now while my regular one is in for some body repairs.  Same manufacturer, but a different model and new.  The control layout on the steering wheel is in just the right place for my muscle memory to hit the mute button when going for the input selector, causing me to then try for where I think the volume buttons are and instead changing the input.  It's been a week since I picked up this car, and I still haven't got out of the habit of thinking that the stereo's locked up because I muted it and put it on a different input with no audio going through it when all I wanted to do was change the station and set the volume.

    • Improvement. Still not great, but an improvement
    • I will try to be more considerate next time and film some more, no sound on video because the only thing you would hear was my burping and my my kids shouting in the background. But some close up photos (and only now I see I have some more solder balls to remove), the back came out nice too, even though the paste was applied by hand with a toothpick and soldered with hot air gun, the first board I did the back with soldering iron and regular wire tin. BTW, this is all fully lead free. Anyhow, this board is now alive too, if someone in the EU zone (really, I am not going to fiddle with custom declarations and such, sorry) is interested in getting one of them cheap-ish (my parts costs plus shipping) without the case, let me know through PM.    Regarding the connector - I did the bevel by hand / sand paper, the gold plating is something that escaped me, but this was also supposed to be an exercise in FPGA board building (to prep for the PokeyMax 4 assembly) rather than producing a shiny thing, so I cut costs.
    • Glad I have my PCE Mini, still means I have access to this gem.  Also picked up a soundtrack a few years back covering the two titles, more modern symphony pieces from I think Eternal, still works for me.
    • Let's burn rubber! I'm going to be unavailable for a few days, but I wanted to get the round started. I've never played the SMS version of Super Monaco GP, and only the Genny version briefly (maybe rented once or something). So I'm not exactly sure how to set up the rules and scoring. I can adjust on Monday or Tuesday if need be. Play in Grand Prix mode. If for some reason this won't work for HSC, I'll pick another racer.       Bonus game is the classic Outrun.   This round runs May 13 - May 26.   Totals: tbd
    • Then there would be two flies identifying as the pre-teleport fly as well.
    • Squeezed in literally 10 seconds of Space Harrier... I had to plug in and unplug my cart about 10 times before I could get it to boot... but I got my bonus in!  Super busy this month, but I'm trying to make time.
    • It does transform the sound data into hex code, which is a plus! But converting the hex to decimal and using it in my code has had unexpected results. Instead of a pleasant, high-pitched coin sound, it lets out an ugly "sproink" noise, like the kind you'd hear on the NES.   #sound_coin_freq: DATA 202, 160, 160, 128 DATA 128, 100, 100, 80 DATA 80, 64, 64, 50 DATA 40, 40, 32, 32 DATA 24, 24, 20, 20 DATA 16, 16, 12, 12 DATA 10, 10, 0, 0 sound_coin_vol: DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12 DATA BYTE 12, 12, 12, 12   It sounds like you don't want to get entangled in this project anymore than you already are, so I suppose I'll need to ask Nanochess for his assistance. (Anybody else is free to chime in if they'd like!) I do wonder what the header for each line of code is supposed to represent, though. Is that a sound channel address?   0x00000027,0xCA
    • Not only is it 50 points newer, it's also a much smaller form factor!  Way easier to transport and has way more expansion ports!
    • OMFG!  The SX212 is XE GREY... DUH!   You need an 835.
    • Actually, no.... I already have an 800 (with a Sophia no less!) but maybe if you had asked REAL NICE I might have offered you a way to fix that problem.
