    • My mentor that first helped me learn some assembly once I joined the local 9t9 users group was so good that he just read the hexcode, he was a human disassembler and compiler, he didn't need to use programs could just type the opcodes out directly and the code would work and give him a program image file and he could transcript the hex into assembly for you.   He never used comments either when coding and also made use of the registers completely, rarely using outside data statements with @ in his coding.   You can see example of one of his coding routines in some of my GitHub repos look for the blwp keyboard cursor routine it is sometimes labeled by James or Jim Ballantyne.     • Wow!  For half the price of one hour on The Source!  My original system only had cassette!    Seriously, though, I just got Wine + Classic99 to work.     Yucky: First time I've seen  Avast interfere with a brew install.  Avast quarantined all the DLLs while brew install wine-stable was writing to /private/tmp/homebrew*.   (speaking of cassettes, thanks a lot, @OLD CS1) .   I imagine it panicking: "Help! This is Mac Avast outpost 49, there's DLLs raining down!"     AFAIK, can't add Unix executables like 'brew' to trusted applications.      Classic99 is running now with Wine + MacOS 13.something.  Yay!  I'm not tethered to my PC.    
    • I live in a PAL region but try to buy NTSC carts when possible* as they are almost always superior, sometimes by a huge margin. I like to load the PAL and NTSC ROM of a game in Stella on my laptop to check them out. I hope your new game has a good PAL version.   *I started out buying PAL as it was cheaper, but have gone on to replace many of my PAL carts. I say replace but I don't actually get rid of the PAL version. I have a PAL drawer and an NTSC drawer in my TV room.
    • From what I've read and watched, the London levels are commonly viewed as the worst of all 3 TR games, and I can see why.   Dark, long, confusing, and more work than fun.  However, the levels are very much brightened in the Remaster, making the stages more palatable. I can't believe how excessive the darkness and shadows were with the Playstation graphics.  Lud's Gate has a sphinx in its Museum section, but it is more of a "hey! Remember this?" addition than something meaningful, its just another room in a sequence which is not all that fun or special.   Then there is a dark flooded section, back and forth with a submersible craft, to open doors and gates and finally reach a boiler room.  Thankfully using the guide,  using camera mode to scout around, and saving frequently made it not too bad for me.     Then you get the shortest stage, called The City, an admittedly fun boss battle and level scaling sequence against Sophia Leigh, who shoots at Lara with her power scepter.  I played this part a few times because it was brief and was so much more enjoyable than the rest of London.    Now I'm at South Seas and the Coastal Village stage, which has beautiful water, fishes, and sky. In the past I always journeyed here first, so I do recall some of it.  It appears there are 2 paths you can take to the village.  I chose the path with 3 Serpent Stones, and I belive years back I only knew the Smugglers Hut path.  
    • Sand Land: This game came into my radar when I saw a review of it from the Happy Console Gamer on Youtube. I hadn't heard a think about it or the manga it apparently based on prior to this. But I'm glad I saw the review and purchased a physical copy of the game for myself to play on my PS4. Like quite a few recent titles, it is yet another new released game that is available for both PS4 and PS5.   As I'm not familiar with any other properties this game is based on, I can only speak from the game itself and the roughly 10 - 12 hours I've put into so far.    What the game essentially is, is more or less an open world exploration action RPG. With combat that takes place in real time both on foot and vehicular. The game takes place on a planet completed covered as a desert where water is scarce and always in need. You play a demon fiend presented as a angst like teen who is recruited by human that visits the demon town needing help for a quest. I'm purposely being vague as to keep this spoiler free. The game doesn't super hold your hand in regards to tutorials and only gives you the basics needed for combat and vehicle control the first time you have to use your skills. There is not only the main quest but quite a few side quests as well that can be done at any time.    Enemies in the game will consist of both creatures found in the desert as well as humanoid like that are part of some faction. The enemies appear to level up as you do from what I've played so far. At least that seems to be true in the areas that you essentially start in. Although I did wander into a part of the game's very large world map that I hadn't explored yet and managed to suddenly come across some level 20+ enemies even though I'm still only at like level 5 myself. So it is possible to encounter some enemies much stronger than you and the game will let you know this based on icons related to the enemies.    Graphically, this game looks quite similar in art style to that of the more recent Dragon Quest games. So all of the characters have a very cartoon look to them. But surprisingly some of the environments and other world objects seem to have a more realistic look to them as compared to the characters. It isn't super obvious or anything but just something I noticed with respect to how some objects in the world are presented. All of your party members are presented quite uniquely from one another, but enemies will all look very similar in regards to creature types and humanoid with only palette swaps and their level indicator letting you know what you could be encountering. I like the graphics overall as they are pleasing and make it easy to see things that need to stand out. But I will state that since the entire planet and map is one large desert area, that aside from the mesas, valleys, and canyons you wander around in, everything looks pretty much the same throughout.   The types of quests are of your typical ones found in many modern games like this today. You will always come across someone that needs specific items that you find while battling enemies and exploring the desert. There are missions where you might have to get a specific item to continue the main quest and while doing those quests, you might come across information that gives you more information on where you might be going next. There are also bounties that you can collect on, and these are always fun. They might be a task where you go after a large and powerful creature enemy type or after a specific person essentially like a mini boss battle that you defeat for additional rewards. Some of the missions or quests in the game are also of the stealth variety where you have to get to a specific point in an enemy camp without being seen. But if you are able to sneak up behind stand alone enemies, you can do stealth take downs to remove them from the map one by one. This helps in order to gain access to some areas in these missions where chests will be sitting about that might contain useful parts you need in the game.    Combat is pretty easy for the most part. There is really just two buttons you need to worry about initially for basic and powerful attacks. Basic attacks being fast to pull off but with less damage being dealt out while powerful attacks leave you more open as they have to wind up essentially to be used. The advantage of the powerful attacks is they usually knock the enemies back allowing you time to recover and get around them for more attacks. There is thankfully a lock-on feature so you can focus on one particular enemy when you have several surrounding you. There are options to call on special attacks from your part members and these attacks and abilities can be leveled up separately from your own. Eventually you gain more skill points to apply to your combat and can combine button presses to create combos and other attacks.    Vehicular combat is more simplified as thus far I only have vehicle I can use and it is able to attack with both a power shot and less damaging but much quicker machine gun shots. I find that the machine gun isn't needed that much, but it is good to use against some creatures and human enemies that might start to swarm so that you can lower their health across the board a bit quicker and then finish them off with a power shot sometimes taking out multiple enemies at once when doing so. You can strafe around the enemies to get better angles to attack them and avoid their shots. Combat is actually quite fun and fast in this game. Additionally, there aren't random encounters and instead you can see the enemies ahead of time out in the desert and decide if you want to engage them or not. Obviously if they are hostile towards you anyway, then they are quite likely to come aggravated and come after you if you get too close to them.     There is some crafting in the game although so far it has been somewhat minimal in my current game play. Mainly consists of working on and upgrading vehicles. There are several vehicles you can get to swap out between in the game, but thus far I only have just 1 but I'm on the look out for additional parts I need to find to create another one that is required for the main quest to be continued. Additionally, the other vehicles will have abilities that allow you to explore other parts of the maps that you can't initially reach so it does have some progression there as well. I know that at some point, it will be possible to essentially craft my own vehicles but I've not gotten quite that far yet.    Overall, I'm having a lot of fun with the game as I do enjoy the art style that has been used and enjoy these kinds of action RPG and exploration games.
    • I think the reason they are similar to grasp is because Forth is actually the "Assembly Language" of Chuck Moore's idea of what a computer should be be. (Two stacks, memory, disk, an i/o terminal and about 35ish "instructions") If it stayed at that level it's not bad but then we pile on a few hundred little "programs" (words) and our human wetware strains to memorize everything. 
    • It’s hard keeping track of who is NTSC and PAL. Yes I knew Retron 77 plays PAL but never purchased any with that console. I’ve always just stuck to NTSC. Until now should be arriving today. Hopefully your game works! I took a chance because the PAL version cost less and I never owned the NTSC version.

    • V4.6 : 06-May-2024 by wavemotion-dave Each game that utilizes a High Score Cart (HSC) gets its own 2K .hsc file Improved High Score Cart (HSC) emulation - improved initialization of the SRAM contents. Sanity checks added so that carts marked as 'NORMAL' (or selected as such) but are larger than 48K will not corrupt memory. New magnifying glass icon to ZOOM (and center) the display 1:1 with real 7800 output. This will crop on a DS/DSi since it only has 256x192 but very useful to toggle the 1:1 zoom for High Score Entries, etc. Support for .a78 V4 headers (will fall back to V3 if not available)   For the new V4 header support, although I parse and interpret all V4 fields, there are some bits that the emulator does not yet support. For example, there is no dual-pokey support - for that designation in the V4 header, I'll simply enable Pokey @450 which gives you half the sound   If there are any combinations that the emulation deems invalid (e.g. Banksets with EXRAM/A8 as the option), I'll fall back to the V3 interpretation and/or some sensical defaults. You can always override any of these settings in the configuration on a per-game basis because occasionally the bits are not set correctly (they are generally spot-on once they get into @Trebor's ProPack... but early forum releases are sometimes hit-or-miss).   I've also made the hard decision to move away from a single high-score backed file to having each game separate. Some games don't play as nice with the HSC SRAM and it's safer to have each game get their own private 2K of SRAM for the high score (you must provide the HSC rom for the emulation to enable High Score support - and obviously only for those games that utilize it... see the readme file for details). I realize that a dedicated group of A7800DS players have built up their current high scores on A7800DS using the HSC feature... and this will force them to start achieving high scores from scratch again. Sorry guys! It's hard to make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
