      A Simple DIY
So, I had one 4 switch wood grain VCS that wasn't working and another 4 switch VCS that was refurbished and working perfectly but it was a vader and the serial number sticker was removed from the bottom.  I wanted a refurbished 4 switch VCS with woody grain and serial number.  Then I had an idea.  Put the board from the good one inside the one with the nice outer case.

So, I watched this video on Youtube and thought, "That doesn't look so hard."  And so I tried it.  And it worked!  I swapped the boards and the switch bezels and Voila!  Behold, my beautiful, refurbished, 4 switch wood grain VCS!  Isn't she a real beaut?

The on/off switch is tight and all of the switches are tight.  The cartridges snap in tightly.  It plays great!  It's really in excellent condition.  I'm very excited to have it.  This was the kind of console we had in our house when I was kid, so it meant a lot to me to get this exact type.

So, you guys all have one, and now I have one, again, too!

    • There is a very easy way to configure the atasm-altirra-bridge to handle two basic scenarios: 1. Working on a project -> need a fully setup "build configuration" file. 2. Working on adhoc files (in a folder) -> need a more flexible "build configuration" file.   The basic idea of the extension is that you have to work in some kind of reference folder. Hence you need to open a folder to have the extension work for you. In the first scenario you have a project in some folder. Call it c:\projects\mygame. Open that folder and click the gear at the bottom of the screen to create the 'atasm-build.json' file. This will generate the default "atasm-build.json" file. The default file where the assembly start is "theapp.asm", change that in line 5: "input": ".....", With this setup you can configure which folders to use for file includes, command line parameters you want to pass to atasm, etc. Good for a project where the settings do not change and you always have the same starting point.   In the 2nd case you have multiple files that you just want to quickly edit and test out individually. - You could edit the "input" field in the "atasm-build.json" file before each assembly. But there is a better option. Just clear the input data field:  And make sure that you have the following atasm settings configured (press Ctrl+s and type atasm into the "Search settings" bar) Turn ON the creation of the 'atasm-build.json' file. (making sure you clear the "input" setting)   Turn ON Assemble Current Asm File, and leave the "Default Asm File To Assemble" blank   With these configurations set you can press F5 to assemble and run the currently open assembler file.  Makes switching between different test files very easy.
    • Ultimate Atari Video...   They can be ordered from the Brewing Academy. It is the only AV upgrade board I advise for Atari systems where composite and s-video is desired.   https://www.ebay.com/itm/284935701275   For 2600 installs, you would likely just need the basic board and have to solder up the wiring from point to point where needed. The light/heavy sixers do have a plug in type version that plugs into the 4050 IC socket, but I've seen that chip NOT in a socket on some light sixers and so it would require having to remove it etc. So again, I feel the basic version with separate wiring is easier in the end with much less risk to the system as a result.
    • Due to how the PCB is made, even if you cut a lot for the SDcard, you can't access it easily as it is designed for the entire thing to be encased into a standard 2600 cartridge shell. So the SDcard will sit to far inside and you would have to use something like tweezers etc, in order to remove it. That is how mine is as it also doesn't appear to have a spring loaded slot, but I was told that the current ones do so that might make it a little easier. But in the end @rbairos advised me that the idea is to keep it all hidden within the cart and not be easily accessed.   I did suggest redesigning the label so that the screen head is exposed and made to be part of the label design so that the cartridge can at least be opened up without any label damage. I actually cut a hole in the center of my label so I could access the screw to update the SDcard as needed. If you use one large enough, you can encode a few movies onto it and keep them in a folder where the only the main movie you want to be active, is copied to the root of the SDcart to be played.
    • So recently I've started a new job that while paying well doesn't afford me with an abundance of free time. A few things I want to get is the Aries64 adapter and Tempest 4000 from Songbird. I also want to mod my Atari 2600 for S-video. I'm in the US and from what I've seen it's the best, simplest mod available at the moment. My question is, is this a simple mod and does it offer good s-video out quality?
    • I have always felt that the 'Box Art' on the GSP looks a bit too small, making the subtle details of the artwork and font appear squished and blurry... Does anyone agree with that, or is it just me?  Are there any plans to make the 'Box Art' on the game selection screen a bit larger?...It would be great if we could get the size of the box art to look somewhat similar to that of the Atari FlashBack 9. *See below:
    • Yes, I believe next Incognito upgrade for the 800 which has been in the pipeline (in development for many years and  - with any luck we might see in the next few years) plans to have Side3 car mounting functionality as well as a lot more. (That is for the likes of Candle to confirm).   Incognito is 2010/12 tech and I believe it doesn't have enough onboard RAM and/or subsequently of course Bios support to be able to offer CAR/BIN/ROM mounting support. Makes sense really. SIDE3 tech came out in the last 5 years maybe(?), and it has far more onboard ram and car supporting tech.   I am sure there is a post on AA where Jon explains why Incognito can't support CAR mounting.
    • The SEM was a single-board kit produced in 1982 to demonstrate the TMS5220 speech chip.  It came with the VM60002 "Industrial Vocabulary" PHROM. (phrase ROM or TMS6100), two serial ports, and audio out jack.     The ROM is a Forth interpreter for the TMS7000.  The low-level code for sending bytes to the TMS5200 is in assembly.    I have just a part of the manual.  Here is the source code, which is probably all of the Forth. (except for 1 missing page in the 990 object loader.)   This should be of interest to Forth users on the 4A.  So I'm posting in Texas Instruments-99/4A Development.   When/if I get the Forth interpreter kernel (TMS7000 assembly), I'll post that in the CC-40 forum.      SPEECH_EDU.FS
    • If cheap carts with the right tech could give all the benefits then it would be great to have them available, but I don't think they'd replace the other options out there. Thing is, most of the RAM upgrades either aren't that expensive, or are way more than just a simple Ram uprade. Multicarts, especially the likes of SIDE3, AVG and SUBAVG - offer so much more.    For example  - a Rambo XL 256k upgrade for a stock 800XL will maybe cost £40 all in. A 320k upgrade for an XE might cost £20 all in. True - you have to have the skills to install them, and they are per machine.   U1MB is around £90, but is way more than just an ram upgrade.   Brian's plug in PBI upgrade boards for the 800XL and 600XL can be switched between stock machines. Same goes for his 400 and 800 ram boards:   https://www.tindie.com/stores/5cfab/   On balance - for most people a plugin Multicart like AVG or Suibavg, which can be moved between the XL/XE lines (where extra cabling is required depending on whether an XE or XL), is a good balance.
    • This is aotta's PiRTO.   It works in this Sears unit.    But here's the funny part? The console that I have that has problems is a Super Pro, that has an INTV II EXEC chip in it.   And it still has issues even with this cart.    Homebrew's, even with CFG files accompanied with it, will not play using his cart, they play in this Sears unit as you can see with my GORF example.    Mattel classic INTV games, will not play using his cart, even if they have CFG files with it, they play in this Sears unit with or without CFG files.  Flawlessly.    But every .bin I have, from Activision, Atari, or INTV Corp, like Defender, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Mud Buggies, .etc   They load right up in this Super Pro.    It really doesn't matter though, because I wanted a cart to play with my brother, and that's why I got the Sears unit, and it works perfect with that, so I'm very happy and thankful, that aotta sent me one to test for him.
