      A Simple DIY
So, I had one 4 switch wood grain VCS that wasn't working and another 4 switch VCS that was refurbished and working perfectly but it was a vader and the serial number sticker was removed from the bottom.  I wanted a refurbished 4 switch VCS with woody grain and serial number.  Then I had an idea.  Put the board from the good one inside the one with the nice outer case.

So, I watched this video on Youtube and thought, "That doesn't look so hard."  And so I tried it.  And it worked!  I swapped the boards and the switch bezels and Voila!  Behold, my beautiful, refurbished, 4 switch wood grain VCS!  Isn't she a real beaut?

The on/off switch is tight and all of the switches are tight.  The cartridges snap in tightly.  It plays great!  It's really in excellent condition.  I'm very excited to have it.  This was the kind of console we had in our house when I was kid, so it meant a lot to me to get this exact type.

So, you guys all have one, and now I have one, again, too!

    • Couldn't agree more. Best thing to do with an 800 is upgrade it  - and on balance Incognito is the best IMHO.   It gives you a lot of flexlibility, whilst still not giving up on the core feel of the machine. In my 800 you'd never notice from the outside it wasn't a stock machine. Incognito's inbuilt side2 loader which allows XEX and ATRs to load really quickly via CF based PBI HDD. I've 1000s of games in my CF library. Bios allows you to switch back to a core 800 setup. Best of all, if you do the ATR light emitter mode, you have a totally discreet way of mounting multi disk ATRs like the 3 x disk image The Brundles and running them off the 800.     For me having the ability to have 64k as a mimimum on my a8s is a must. I upgrade all my 600XL's to 64k straight away (from the stock 16k).   I simply couldn't leave a machine with only 48k and miss out on all the great 64k minimum games. All my 800XL's will either get the Rambo XL 256k treatment, (cost of perhaps £30)m  or U1MB, (£90 odd). And all my XEs will either get the 320k upgrade, (cost of around £20), or again U1MB. Appreciate here you are having the skills to do these internal mods).   Of course there are - at times - cheaper ways to do the latter for XE line and the 800XL/600XLs (in the form of the Avg and subavg carts - which then can just be moved from one stock machine to the other).    But I digress - wer are talkin about the 800 and the incognito.     Finally, there is nothing more satisfying than booting up 1mb demos like Alley dog or the amazing Rewind demo on an Incognito'd 800.
    • Now we are testing v1.10...it seems it's works fine on NTSC...and also works very well on XEGS  now I am waiting for some new screens from KAZ which we want to add them to this version. Then we publish it.
    • Inter-network week this week!   The Bombers scored a run in the 4th inning and hold on to beat the Mutants 1-0.  Mutants get their first loss of the season.
    • Ha, I figured out actually what was wrong with mine... Nothing.  Absolutely nothing was wrong with it.  When I first got it, I'd tried it with one of my 8bit computers, and it was working fine there.  Then when I tried it on my original 800xl, it didn't work fully.  Tore it apart, shortened the ribbon, s I thought maybe one of the lines went bad, still it didn't work... then it occurred to me to try it on a different computer (I have a lot of 8bits) and it worked fine.  I then went and checked out my 800xl.  One of the pins on the joystick port was broken inside, so it was hard to spot.  I replaced it and now it's fine.  It was one of the pins that a joystick didn't actually use, which made it extra weird.  It was probably broken for ages.
    • 128k for all the levels - If running off say an XEX version of the game - it does load on 64k machines but you only get two levels. It has a cart version where I think the extra levels are in banked ram, so I think it will run off stock 64k PAL machines.
    • Yes, a Brother M1109/M1009 I think, I have it stored somewhere, the EPROM died a slow death. I used it mainly for my program listings so I could change and add improvements by hand. All my software disks has vanished into the Ether a long time ago. I hope to get a lot of my printed programs back to life over time. I wrote some stuff for the MicroBee as well. Regards Arto.
    • I do not know who owns Toki now, but Pixel Games UK owns both California Games and Impossible Mission, I believe. I think Atari could work something out with them. Or just buy the games outright from them.
