Lynx soundtrack rips

Hey all.

A few years back I ripped the soundtracks from quite a few Lynx games and converted them to .ogg's. At the time, the only Lynx community I was aware of was the dwindling gang at gamefaqs's Lynx sub-forum, so there was very little interest in my project. But I still have all the rips if anybody here is interested. I could probably upload them to rapidshare or something for an easy way to exchange them. ...or are they already out there somewhere? I was unable to find too much online back then.

I also did a bunch of Jaguar soundtracks, but the sound quality is horrid since I didn't have a composite cable at the time and had to go through my TV's headphone-out jack. (Urk!) But I suppose I could upload those as well if anybody wants them.

Oh, and the tunes I ripped are:

*soundtracks marked with an asterisk were ripped from an emulator, not the actual carts, and thus the quality is fairly crap. But it's better than nothin'!

how do you get s copy of the music out of the ROM?

There is really no good way to do it today. You probably have to record it.

But there is a very promising way of doing it that should be implemented in Handy.

Maxim has created a format called VGM for ripping game music. The idea is that you run the game in an emulator and whenever the code changes some sound registers on the Lynx Handy could write the register change with a clock count in a file.

The resulting file can then be played back on WinAmp with a VGM plugin. Of course you also need to write a Lynx sound emulator to the VGM plugin for this to work. The good thing is that this approach provides a clean sound instead of the stuttering sound Handy has.

I ran a cable from the Lynx headphone jack out to my laptop, and recorded/edited them with Audacity. The results were fantastic for a non-professional, unexperienced job IMO.

The rapidshare links are below. The files were too big to include as one download, so I had to split it into two. Oh, and please let me know if you've downloaded and/or enjoyed this so I can get that warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

Yup, I was a dummy and forgot to include the password with the post. When you reminded me, I figured it would be best to put the password right next to the links for minimal confusion. But it seems you're the only one who's downloaded it, so now it's all good (I think). Glad you like them!

Yes, for right this second... But you have to understand... There will be alot of people that download it and enjoy them and never take the time to write a simple email to say, Thanks... You'll see, there will be more that will enjoy them and post their opinions over time... It won't happen all tonight...

Hey PFG9000

Great Recordings!

Can you or someone record the intro to gates of zendocon? Theres a part where its shows the floating brain and it starts laughing, then bubbles fall down beneath it.

I always remember the laughing part on the real thing and always wondered why handy never did it and see they use the similiar trick as the c64 and change the volume control. I made a quick hack to handy to play it but it sounds clipped too hard. I notice theres several sound registers not utilized in the mixing of the audio in handy.

I noticed someone else mentioned that missing sound in gates in another thread. Is there any other sound discrepancies in any other games? Are there any games that specifically used stereo panning? I never did have many lynx games and mine is in storage far far away so I dont have access to it.
