Scoring Points in Halloween

  • Take a child to a safe room - 675 points
  • Stab the killer with a knife - 325 points
  • On each subsequent level, the point values are multiplied by the level number.

Hints and Tips

As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available. Here are the hints it provides:

- The killer will catch you only if he is toe-to-toe with the babysitter.

- When leading a child to a safe room, you may find the murderer in your patch. Try pushing up on the joystick. The babysitter and the child will momentarily separate, allowing the killer to pass harmlessly between them.

- Don't bother search for the knife while leading a child, for it won't appear.

- Listen for the ominous "HALLOWEEN" theme music, which follows the maniac wherever he goes.

My personal tips:

-Be wary about rooms that suffer from blackouts (usually they're adjacent to the safe rooms, but I could be wrong.) It's easy for the killer to come in and get you while the lights are out.

-If you can't grab a kid, such as during a blackout when you can't find them, and the killer is coming, leave the screen and return and the killer will be gone.

However, I have some really good tips that helped me!

TIPS:

#1: When you are on a screen with a child and the killer appears, the killer always seems to go for the kid first. So you can hover over the kid (with the babysitter as high up as possible). This will allow you time to grab the kid without fear of being killed.

#2: Another thing to remember is that there is no timer. Even though it feels frantic trying to save the helpless innocent little children just play it cool and safe. Backtrack if you have to.

Check out Kurt's Map

There are two rooms with blackouts, which are the second one from the left and right, respectively (as mentioned before). The doors on the left and right lead to the other floor; the doors in the middle room lead to the other door on the same floor.

Here are some more tips:

- The killer usually appears in the uppermost position, either on the left or right side, so as long as he's not in the room, it's safest to be in the lowest position possible. In rooms with doors, the killer may also appear in the door.

- The killer's position isn't consistent, that is, if you leave him behind in a room, he may still appear on the other side of the next room (and most of the time, he does appear eventually while you cross a room). In contrast to that, the position of unsaved children and the knife stay consistent until the knife is taken or the a child is saved or killed, in which case they move to some other room, which may also be the room you're just in, but in that case they won't be visible until you leave it and enter it again.

- The knife always seems to appear in a room on the lower floor. Thus, the lower floor is a little easier to play because there are no blackouts there either. However, after rescuing some children, you may find there are none left on the lower floor, so you'll have to go upstairs to rescue the children there.

- Picking up the knife usually means that you get the chance to use it in the very room you're in, since the killer will usually appear before you enter another room.

- If you have the knife, you can push the button a little in advance. The knife will stay up for about half a second, in which you can continue to run and stab the killer. If you keep the button depressed, there will be a high chance you stab the killer, because after the "up" time, the knife will be down for a split second and then be up again.

- If there's a child, the killer will first close in on it and kill it, after which he will close in on you. If there's no child in the room, he will go for you immediately, but you can outrun him because you're faster (at least in the first 2-3 levels).

* Probably an obvious hint, but you can generally avoid Micheal Myers quite easily by luring him either up or down as far as you can go, and then right before he gets you, run to the other extreme and pass him.

* As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter how many kids Micheal Myers kills. The only way you can lose the game is by your OWN death. Also, Micheal Myers will ALWAYS go for the kid first. As grisly as it is, if it comes down to you or the kid, let him take the kid.

* If you are in a room with a kid, and it's obvious that Micheal Myers is closer to the kid than you are, just leave the room and re-enter until you have a better position. The kids can't be killed off-screen

* You can only move down so far, but when he's going to kill a kid, Micheal Myers will actually move much farther down than you can. He'll have to walk back up to your level before he can kill you, which can give you a slight advantage.

* On a related note, if Micheal Myers moves "below" you to attack a kid, you won't be able to hit him with the knife (if you have one) until he moves back up (that is, after the kid is dead).

* It doesn't seem like you can make a kid follow you while you're carrying a knife, so use it at the first chance you get.

* The safe rooms are safe for you too. If you have to take a break, they make for a good pause button.

* I was trying some junk in the game, and when you're in the blackout rooms, Micheal Myers can't kill the kids while the screen is black. I just sat there waiting for him to kill the kid, but he wouldn't do it until the lights came on. This might also apply to your character as well.

- Don't EVER stop on the edge of a screen. 50% of the time, Mike will appear on the other side; 50% of the time, he appear right on top of you. When entering a new screen, move immediately AWAY from the screen edge. The center of the screen is safest.

- UNLESS you're on a screen with a closet door, which is another of Mike's favorite hiding places. On those screens, position yourself between the edge and the closet until you see where he pops out. Also, NEVER use the closet as a shortcut. It sucks to pop "out" of the closet only to have Mike pop out right behind you. It's not worth the shortcut.

- The "safe rooms" where you drop off the kids for points are a great informal "pause." Mike never shows up in these rooms, so you can go to the can or grab a snack as long as you're in there.

- For some reason, Mike almost ALWAYS (80% of the time) enters from the right-hand side in the downstairs, far left room. It's usually easier to just go upstairs to the blackout room when you're on that side of the house as you'll never get past him downstairs.

- Never use the knife for points. You're basically facing against Mike and risking a life just for a few hundred points. Not worth it.

- As stated earlier, Mike will go after the kids before he comes after you. If it looks like you're going to get killed, and you have a kid in tow, drop the kid and get away. You can always get another kid - the house is filled with them - but you don't get any extra lives. So use the kids as bait when necessary.

- When you do lose a life, GET MOVING THE SECOND YOUR NEW MAN APPEARS. The new man is sometimes placed on the edge of the screen RIGHT WHERE MIKE POPS UP. So, if you die, haul butt away from where you start again. Nothing worse than losing a life, then losing ANOTHER life immediately because you didn't think to move or you were "getting your bearings."

- If hearing the same song over and over again would drive you nuts, turn the volume down or off. There are no sound effects or music cues in the game to speak of. Although, the music only plays when Mike's on-screen, so I usually use it as a warning system. Your choice.

- Mike is a just a bit slower moving diagonally than when moving in a straight line, so hover down towards the bottom of the screen. Mike always appears toward the top of the screen, so that will buy you a few milli-seconds while he crosses diagonally downward to you. It's a minimal advantage, but it's been helpful to me and has saved me a few times.

If you're like me and HATE blackout rooms, go out of your way to avoid them. I do and it's worth it. I'd rather take the long route than risk going through a blackout room in the later levels.
1. The knife is your friend. Learn how to use it to "kill" Myers. Especially on the fast levels, it may be the only way to get to the other side of a screen.

2. Don't feel guilty about sacrificing a couple of kids here and there. The house is full of them. If you're trying to get past a screen (especially the blackout screens) let Myers off the kid, which will allow you to get by safely. I know that sounds horrible, but it helped me get that score.

Don't try to knife the killer. It doesn't seem like it is worthwhile (score-wise) eventhough it may feel satisfying. I see three reasons: it seems harder to do than saving children, it is worth less points than saving children, and it advances the level quicker (two kills vs. 5 saves). Therefore, you will end up at harder levels with a lower score. I gave up knifing early on; bad habit anyway. ;)

A precursor to the game Clock Tower, definitely.

OK, here's my first attempt... 13050.

This is a stupid question....but I'm going to ask just to be sure....I have a repro of this game....is it ok to use? (Sorry, I'm technically ignorant....I just want to be sure).

Repros work exactly like the regular copies......so GAME ON, BROTHA!!!!

And let's just hope Snider-man doesn't pop in this week.......otherwise, we'd be smoked!

I can amass a sizable score on this....but it's a chore...since the game is dull!!!

17,325. Only 100K to go to catch up to Recycled! Great score!

This game is fun. I hate the blackout rooms, though. :x

Thanks!! :D

Now the blackout rooms get really challenging at later levels of the game when Michael Myers starts moving fast....it's especially tough during the long blackout between the various flickers. My strategy is to move to the center of the room and wait until the flicker illuminates which way Myers is coming from....then run in the opposite direction (of course).

It's hard to get them kids to follow. It takes constant manipulation of the fire button. If possible, I try to pull them closer to the side that I'm coming out of, if I can't get them in one try.

Also, using the black knife jumps you ahead levels.....so you can rack up points quicker. Just saving children makes an already tedious game worse since that's a slower way to move up the speed and scoring levels.
