Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Welcome aboard the missile laser base. I'm Commander Champion, your training instructor. These laser bases are used to protect our Universe from alien attack. Each laser base carries missiles which you'll launch from your control panel.

In your first training mission, you'll be battling an age-old threat, the Galaxian fleet, which has thrived on war and terrorism for centuries. Together, we must destroy these warmongers to maintain peace and tranquility over the Universe.

Scoring Points in Galaxian
  • Drones (Green) - 30 points in formation, 60 points in flight
  • Emissaries (Purple) - 40 points in formation, 80 points in flight
  • Escorts (Red) - 50 points in formation, 100 points in flight
  • Flagships (White) - 60 points in formation, 120 points in flight alone
  • Flagship in flight with escort - 200 points (one escort), 300 points (two escorts)
  • Shoot both escorts first, then Flagship - 800 points

Hints and Tips
  • Sometimes exploding particles from a destroyed red escort are deadly.
  • Shoot escorts (red members of the Galaxian fleet) only when they are escorting a Flagship; shoot the Flagship only in flight. Doing this will help you score higher points.
  • Study the Galaxian attack patterns; that way you'll know what to expect from each member of the Galaxian fleet.
  • If you need a rest while fighting waves 1 and 2 of the Galaxian attacks, go to the extreme right or extreme left of the screen for a few seconds. During the higher level waves, stay away from the corners to avoid being trapped by a Galaxian.
The Manual
As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available. Here are the hints it provides:
homerwannabee
First and foremost, keep an eye on the purple ships when they are in flight. The purple ships are by far the most dangerous. The reason being is that they have the ability to swoop down and hit you from the side. When they come down do all you can to destroy them as quick as possible.

Second, be sure to move slightly when you shoot a ship. There have been some times when I have literally been hit by a last second shot while sitting there.

Third, as much as possible always go after the two red ships and the white ship when they come down. There are some big points that can be had by doing this.

Fourth, for some reason levels 10,15,20,25,30 and so on are especially hard. The game switches up the way the ships fly on these levels and they swoop at a much quicker rate. If you can get past level ten then you will have a couple of easier levels before the game is amped up again.

Fifth, stay in the middle as much as possible. One reason for this is that if you are being attacked you can go either left or right to avoid the attack. The other reason is that the purple ships tend to slow down right in the middle as they change direction. This is one of the few times the purple ships are sitting ducks in a sense.

Lastly, accuracy is very important. If you can get your timing down and hit about 70 to 80 percent of your shots you will do pretty good.
Captain Beard
--- Don't shoot ships that haven't broken formation. Just don't. Seriously.

--- Let the flagships in formation go by if you don't think you can take out all three (or both, if it's down to only two.) This is where the real points are, folks, so don't waste'em. You should be scoring 3000+ points on every board.

--- It's much easier to hit enemies when they are closer to the bottom. Let them come to you to reduce the flight time of your missile, 'cuz when you can't shoot is when you're most vulnerable.

--- Along similar lines, make sure to only fire once by taking your finger off the fire button fast. It takes a light touch if the ship you're shooting at is very close to your own but you stand to lose valuable time as well as points if you accidentally nail a ship which has yet to break formation.

--- Don't be afraid to cut it close. The collision detection in this game is really good - if the enemy (or their shot) doesn't hit your ship, you won't die. So don't panic if the only way out of a tough situation is to squeak right under a low-flying baddie. And although staying alive is always preferable to dying, if you've already taken out the two escorts, by all means slide under the flag ship. If there's an escort directly in front of an incoming flagship, you can wait until the last possible second and still easily get off two shots to nail them both.

--- Make sure to re-center your ship at the end of every level. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten to do so and ended up getting nailed by a fast-diving ship as soon as the next wave started.

I've been fiddling around with the formatting of the top post a bit. Still wrestling with some of the alignment, but what do you guys think so far? It uses the CSS styles that AtariAge itself uses, so it should inherit the style of whatever skin you have set up (or at least, it WOULD do this if there were more than one skin for this board :P )

I'm using the 'B' or 'Novice' setting, but I don't really use the auto fire until the later rounds. The first 3 levels, or so, I wait for the enemies to dive before I pick them off. Once they start dive boming in large numbers, I let the missles fly! That's probably why my score is so low, though. :( Great choice for the week. I'll be playing lots of Galaxian this week! :)
