Important Note: This week's competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Roderick Hero here (R.Hero to my associates), President and Chief Executive Officer of H.E.R.O., Inc., inviting you to join me in tackling a tricky maze of mine shafts rife with the kind of danger we daring types only dream of. Until now, that is!

Think of it: miners trapped in a mountain bubbling with lava rivers and magma deposits, mine shafts crawling with vile vermin, all lethal to the touch. Oh, it's just too awful - and too exciting!

I'm armed with equipment of my own invention. My Prop-pack carries me to even deeper depths, while I zap creepy critters with my Microlaser Beam. Dynamite demolishes walls that get in my way. If my supply lasts, that is. And my power.

Did I mention the terrible tentacles that loom up out of lava? Or the massive walls that can crush me? What about the raft I ride on? Oh, never mind. Come along, and make yourself useful.

Scoring Points in H.E.R.O.
  • Shoot a critter - 50 points
  • Dynamite a wall - 75 points
  • Rescue a miner - 1000 points + bonus based on time remaining
  • Each dynamite stick remaining after rescue - 50 points

Hints and Tips
  • The dynamite R.Hero carries is potent. He doesn't need to be right next to a wall in order to blow it up.
  • If R.Hero runs out of dynamite, he can burn through walls with the Microlaser Beam. The closer he stands to the wall, the faster he'll break through.
  • If a lantern goes out, find mineshafts by looking at the rough edges along the bottom of the screen.
  • When flying above the river, ride the ceiling by pushing up as well as to the left or right.
  • Ride rafts whenever possible since it is easier than trying to go under a lava ceiling.
  • A word about tentacles: They don't move too fast, so try to outrun them.
The Manual
As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy and a scanned copy available online for your viewing pleasure. Here are the tips it provides:
theking21083
When going down a screen try to stay to the left. The lamps are always on the right side.
Captain Beard
As long as you're not standing on the platform you planted the bomb on, you will not die in the explosion, no matter how close you are. This is useful on some of the later boards where there's a wall on a narrow ledge. You can plant the bomb, step off the platform and simply hover right next to it and no harm will come to your H.E.R.O. when the bomb takes out the wall.

Another tip: If you need to get airborne, it's quicker to step off a ledge then to push up from a standing position -- your prop-pack will automatically kick on when there's nothing but air beneath your feet. Just remember to push up as soon as you step off the ledge -- gravity is stronger than your prop-pack!
Nathan Strum
(In regards to Captain Beard's second tip) You can run across the two smallest-sized gaps using this technique, too. Just hold the stick up and in the direction you're running, and you'll run right across them.
aftermac
To get past the fast moving snake in the narrow shaft on level 10, drop straight down the shaft without hesitating, turn to the left and fire as you go past. If you do hesitate (ie. use the prop pack) go back up to the previous screen and drop again and your timing will always be perfect!
toymailman
Try playing games 2, 3, and 4. These start you at higher levels. It is a great way to practice them. This way you are not "blind-sided" when you finally advance there beginning from Level 1. I found just learning/memorizing the levels and doing them quickly is one of the best ways to score high points.

Another tip (sorta) that worked for me was to push myself on every level to see if I could do it faster than previous attempts. I tracked this by writing down my best accumulative score after each level. Every time I played I always tried to beat this. It was a good motivator and maximized my points on the earlier (and therefore easier) levels. This is what I ended up with for the initial levels.

1: 2935
2: 7485
3: 13420
4: 20340
5: 28000
6: 36015
7: 44185
8: 53975
9: 64665
10: 76225
11: 87155
12: 100435
13: 112455
14: 121155

This was all done by not losing a life or not finishing and getting to do the level again. I never made it past level 15 without either of these happening so I did not put them up.

By the way, I only have 2 games left in my list of future games (and one of them I've been intentionally delaying for reasons I prefer not to mention yet).... so send me a message and suggest some more games!

--Zero

I'll send you a list. ;)

I just finished going through all my CIB games (not quite 500) to test them all. I only found one DOA cart. It was in my NIB Dice Puzzle (yes I opened it). Arghhh! Now I will have to find a loose one somewhere. The only NIB game I didn't open was my GLIB. How much value is lost for GLIB going from NIB to CIB?

There are a number of homebrews that are really fun too.

Also, one more note. I am assuming all the Olympic-type games are off the table due to the upcoming Atari Olympics anyway.

OK, here's my first entry... 44350.

This is a game I played extensively on the C-64 back in the 80's. And it reminds me of some rewritten lyrics I created back in 1998...

H.E.R.O.

There's a H.E.R.O. if you look among your carts,

You don't have to be afraid to plug it in.

There's a girlfriend if you reach into its caves

And the walls that you can see may go away.

And then a H.E.R.O. flies along with the strength to carry bombs

And you blast the bats aside and you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone, look around you and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth that a H.E.R.O. lies in you

It's a long way when you face the caves alone

No one reaches out a hand for you to hold

You can touch lamps if you fly along the walls

And the light that lights the caves will disappear.

And then a H.E.R.O. flies along with the strength to lay his bombs

And you blast your walls aside, and you know you can survive

So when you feel like hope is gone, face the lava and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth that a H.E.R.O. lies in you

Lord knows platforms are hard to follow

But don't let anyone tear them away

Hold on, there'll be bigger sorrow,

but in time you'll find the way

And then a H.E.R.O. flies along with the strength to blast his bombs

And you shoot them all aside, and you know you can survive

And when you feel your lives are gone, just reset it and be strong

And you'll finally see the truth that a H.E.R.O. lies in you

No, No that is the actual deadline. We are just posting for the fun of it. If I were you I would stop playing and move on to something else. ;)
