HSC Season 5 Week 39: Fishing Derby

Recommended Posts

Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Grab your rod, your bait, and your lures, because we're going down to the ol' fishing hole for a good old fashioned Fishing Derby!

Note: This game scores a little differently... there is no time limit, so the game doesn't end until someone hits 99 points. So fish as long as you like, and your score differential will be what you are ranked by (So if you beat the computer 99-80, then your score differential is 19). Note that you are not required to fish all the way to 99.

Scoring Points in Plaque Attack
  • First two rows: 2 points each
  • Second two rows: 4 points each
  • Bottom two rows: 6 points each

Hints and Tips
  • Once you've hooked your fish, you'll want to play him back and forth until the shark moves out of the way, then push the red button and land him quickly. You can reel in more or less slowly by pressing or releasing the red button and you can move your line back and forth with your Joystick.
  • Since the big fish are in the fifth and sixth rows, go deep. Start with the fifth row if you're the player on the left. You will have a little advantage there, because you can reach the fifth row first. The player on the right should go to the sixth row to catch his big ones.
  • Also, watch to see which fish start from your opponent's side and which start from your side. As fish are caught, they are replaced on the side they started from. It's better for you to catch fish that start uner your pier, because you can usually go right back for another one.
The Manual
As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have a copy of this game's manual, AtariAge has a scanned and a typed copy available online for your reading pleasure. Here are the hints it provides:
Kurt_Woloch
Through the restriction that only one player is able to pull up his fish at a time, the game gets some kind of "rhythm" to it. Either you get to hook the next fish first, or the computer does. Whoever does it gets his fish first, and also gets to throw out his rope again while the other player is pulling up his fish.
The reason for this restriction is probably the Atari 2600's restriction to two "player" objects, where the fish that currently gets pulled up becomes the 2nd player, while all the other fish are displayed multiplexing the 1st one.
Anyway... this leads to the following tips:
- The manual is a bit misleading. Actually, while one player pulls up his fish, the fish the other player caught won't move up slowly, but it won't move up at all (since it's still the same shared player). It only will start to move up once the other player has pulled up his fish completely.
That means that you're not in a big hurry with pulling up a fish once you've caught it as you otherwise would be, because the other player won't be able to overtake you... he maybe will catch a fish too, but he won't be able to move it up until you've finished yours, so you can take your time avoiding the shark.

Now the "ideal" way of playing the game would be if both players take turns pulling their fish from the 5th and 6th row. There are, however, ways that "routine" gets broken:
- One player's fish gets caught by the shark... in this case that player won't get points for his fish (but sometimes he still will, as I think I found out).
- One player "overtakes" the other by pulling up his fish and then catching another one before the other player is able to get his next one.

So... if you haven't got your rope completely pulled out yet, and you see that the computer is close to catching his next fish, it may be better to catch a fish from a higher row if that's possible more quickly than the computer can catch his. In this case, you get your fish first, and get to throw your rope again before the computer gets his, which gives you a bigger advantage than if you let the computer catch his fish and then catch yours on the lower rows.
On the other hand, while the computer is pulling up his fish, there's no need to go for a fish yourself quickly, rather you can take your time digging into deeper rows because you won't be able to pull up your fish anyway before the computer is finished with his one.

I hope that wasn't too confusing...

99-64.

I'm posting 2 screenshots from 2 different games. I finished one game with a score of 99-65. How is that possible when all fish score even numbers of points, you ask? Well, I found out that if the computer score is rolling when you hit 99, his score counter will stop. In other words, he won't get full credit for his catch. I thought I'd post that screenshot just for the heck of it.

Master Baiter! LOL!

I actually looked up Fishing Derby to see the patch, only to discover that there wasn't one. :(

Well, I fixed that! ;)

I was gonna say cool patch, till I saw your avatar. :(

;)

(actually, that was a great series, and Detroit clearly had a better defensive game, but we almost pulled off the comeback in the end there!)

Congrats to your Wings

Thanks... I think... :ponder: ;)

I was actually debating on making the patch shaped like the fish, but I didn't have the time to commit to that. That would have been A LOT more work, but could have been infinitely cooler. :) I ended up just modifying the Hero patch...

That was a great series! Sorry about the avatar, but I'm having a pretty good couple of days here. ;)

Credit to the Pens for not rolling over after the first two games. If the Pens learned the same lessons about playoff hockey in this series, as the Wings learned from the Devils in 1995, there will be a Cup in Pittsburgh soon enough. If it's any consolation, game 5 still stings... and, I just about had a heart attack at the end of game 6. :)

EDIT: Improved the patch.

OH MY GOD.

I want the top patch, and put it on my fridge.

I hear ya! Game 5 was certainly Fleury's shining moment, and to think that we were 30 seconds away from not even having a game 6!

We were all out of our seats for the last 2 minutes of last night's game. After the one goal, we all went bananas! The end to the series had us all pumped up; in spite of losing the Cup. We all knew that in the end, we couldn't have asked for more from the Pens.

I am excited for the future. I know we'll get there, I just wasn't expecting them to reach the finals so soon!

As to not get too side-tracked...

Beat my own score on my second try! 99 - 48

Hey all! Long time, no see...

Great to be back -- wish I had a better score to post for my triumphant return, however...

99-86 for a measly score of 13.

So... what's new around the HSC clubhouse?

Welcome back! I had to bump you down a notch in the standings. I almost felt bad about it too! ;)

OH MY GOD.

I want the top patch, and put it on my fridge.

:D

As soon as I posted the first version of the patch, I realized I wasn't happy with it. I like the top one much better, too!

This game would be more exciting if you could use your fishing knife to cut your opponent's line... or throat...

Ah, the innocence of games past...

As for you, aftermac, I'll get my position back.

Is there an emoticon for "I'm shaking my fist at you and the sky!"?

My score improves again: 99-56 for a score of 43. Woo-hoo!

Weird! Thanks for the heads-up... It's always good to know when games screw up their own scoring ;)
