PS2 Memory Card W/ Independence Exploit

I want to play around with my PS2 as a media streamer but I don't want to spend $30 on a mod chip or swap discs since I would basically only use them to load the Independence Exploit that one time.

So I would either like to buy a ps2 memory card (official sony one would be my first choice) with the Independence Exploit on it or possibly I could ship a memory card to you so you could put the exploit on there for me and I would pay shipping both ways and a little something for your time.

Give me a PM if you can help me out!

So I take it if someone has one of those gameshark thingies they can copy over the Independence Exploit themselves?

I always assumed it was just a specially modified PS2 memory card that couldn't be done by the average user.

Any links..

Those things are out now? What the? Anyone got a link? (I'm going to search goggle now)

What do you mean out now? It just some files that you place on a memory card from my understanding.

This is how I understand it.

You use a swap disc to load a copied PS1 game with the modified files on it.

The game copies the files to the memory card.

and according to wikipedia "The exploit relies on creating a deliberately incorrect entry inside this file, which triggers a buffer overflow and, combined with a small stub loader located in the file, allows the execution of unencrypted code from the Memory Card upon the insertion of a specific PS1 game."

I looked at the price on the special memory card--that's more than even the DMS4 modchip! :o I guess it's worth it if you don't wanna mess with soldering, though.

Exactly thats why I was wondering if someone could just get the file on the card for me. Didn't really want to drop $60 on a fancy memory card.

I can do it for you but you don't what the independance you want the new PS2 mem card mod. PM me and I can do it for you for 10 bucks and that includes return shipping. But once you do this you need another mem card and it must be an 8mb official Sony one or it won't work. You can't play normal games with this mem card so you need one for burned games and one for originals.

I thought about trying to make the memcard myself, but I do not have a game shark to do it with. I'm still considering DMS4, though, that way I don't need anything special at all to work with. It's kinda like comparing a 1.50 PSP phat to a phat running Time Machine and 1.50. Take the memstick away and the latter is stuck on 3.90 or something.

Now that is the one I thought he was referring to. Does that particular exploit have a name? Any links for directions? Does it require putting in a PS1 disc as well or does it get around that?

Is there still a place that has the DMS4 in stock? I've been wanting one of those to help with my new found taste of Euro imports (auto Y-Fix).

The new exploit is called Free McBoot. Seems to work pretty well and supposedly does not require a PS1 game to boot up. I haven't tried it though, so I'm not entirely sure.

I've done this new memory card loader and it works great. No PS1 disk needed. The best place to download any files, tutorials, and instructions is on this website:

http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast/

The exploit that needs to be installed onto a Sony 8mb memory card using something like Action Max Replay, Codebreaker, or a Swap magic disk, those cheat systems let you move things around from a usb memory stick to a ps2 memory card. You install the FreeMcboot on the card, do some configuration and then your ps2 is officially softmodded when it boots with the memory card inserted. Next to play homebrew or backups of your ps2 disks you have to install the ESR program again from a memory stick to the ps2 memory card, cool thing is now that you are softmodded you don't need any of the cheat CDs to read your usb stick. When you do a backup of your original ps2 game or if you have a .iso you have to patch the game with a esr patcher before it can run on the ps2, takes 1 second with a cross-platform java app.

I think the ESR trick works because it patches dvds with headers that makes a ps2 with FreeMcboot think it's a DVD video and it will get around Sony's protections. Anyways it's been fun to play around with this exploit.

Hmm Interesting. Not sure if I wanna go modifying my backups from their original format in order to accomodate this. (mostly cause I prefer to "preserve" everything in original format). But maybe I'll do them as I play them. One nice thing about the setup I have now is I can use that exploit that lets one play PS1 backups.

Thanks for the info though. I'll probably at least "try" it. I just like tinkering with stuff like this.

Well at the very least it looks like it works with HD loader which oughta come in handy since I already have that set-up on my PS2. :)
