homerwannabee
Here is a little bit of info on her. According to this she is married to a University of Georgia professor. http://www.nndb.com/people/297/000136886/
moycon
More info. None recent though. http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/v...eloperId,52278/ http://www.davidlubar.com/mygames.html Carol Shaw I met her when I was working for Activision. Her algorithm for creating the landscape in River Raid is one of the most elegant pieces of programming I ever saw. Side note -- her brother Steve did the Apple version of Deluxe Paint for Electronic Arts.
HammR25
I don't think she does games anymore. Programmer Carol Shaw - wife of Xerox's Merkle - has also designed a nanotechnology modelling program. http://www.sciencebase.com/elemnano.html
phuzzed
Interesting.... so, has no one heard or seen her since the Big video game crash of the early 80s? She keep a low profile these days?
Gregory DG
Wonder if she has anything to do with www.carol.com ? 'Tis ashame she won't take more (any?) bows for River Raid. She's gotta know it's one of the best games ever made.

I know someone who has contacted her in the last year or so regarding an interview on River Raid but she declined.

Oddly enough, we had a discussion about this at Seans party. We came up with 5 people: Dan Bunten Bill Heineman William Mataga Steve Kitchen Jay Fenton There may be another Atari person, but we couldn't recall the name. Still, five is a lot considering they're all game programmers. Must be something in the water... Tempest

mos6507
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Heineman Noooo!!!!!! Burger Bill?? I hung out with him a few times when I was on the West Coast. I was hoping to work on a classic game project with him but it fell through. I never had a clue he'd do that.
mos6507
BTW, Carol shaw used to have the domain www.carol.com. I suppose that was too lucrative a domain to hang on to, because it's obviously not owned by her anymore, but while it was up she used to put info about what she was working on, and you could email her at carol@carol.com. I mean no disrespect, but she's clearly a textbook geek with limited interpersonal skills. She's fully aware of that, which is why, while she's by no means antisocial, she is definitely camera shy. It took a lot of coaxing to get her to appear in Stella at 20, a lot of help from her peers to complete the segment on her games, and a lot of careful editing to try to present her in the best possible light. BTW, I found Doug Neubauer quite similar to Carol, but a bit more capable of being interviewed. His memory of the Atari days was surprisingly spotty. He was really not what I expected him to be at all. He talked about his games in a very layman-like or anthropomorphic way. He's pointing to the football players in Super Football like he's watching reptiles run around in a terrarium saying "and then the guys kinda run down here but they REALLY want to go this way to avoid the flicker". I was expecting him to think of his games in a more clinical, technical fashion. I guess he's more of the quintessential hacker than a cold and calculating coding genius. By and large the programmers who have done interviews and shown up at the conventions are the only ones you'd really want to hear from. Not everybody can be the life of the party like, let's say, a Eugene Jarvis. Edited October 15, 2008 by mos6507
Rik
I hope i didnt slander anyone, but since when is a sex change a crime?its so accepted now,and any other ALTERNATIVE lifestyle, which is cool, live and let live right ,anyway, I swear to god i read that a well known classic game programmer had a sex change from man to woman, and that it was one of the Kitchen bros,i might be wrong, but im about 80% sure,Can someone verify? There were quite a few game designers who had an alternative lifestyle, and quite a few who had sex changes, just interested to know.Dont laugh,i think there might be a shred of truth to this supposed MYTH that game designing attracted alot of alternative lifestyle folks for some reason.
