Does anyone here own an actual 2800?

While you can easily get ahold of the Sears Branded Sears Telegames version of the Atari 2800j, the actual 2800's themselves are much more difficult to come by, they were only sold in Japan and not many are still around, even fewer are in original boxes, I'd say you'd pay $300-$500 for one if its complete in a mint condition box.

I only know of 2 others besides mine that are complete.... its a really nice system, its the only Atari 2600-line system to have 4 joystick ports and it was Atari's first production release of combo paddel/joystick controllers and that are rounded and quite comfortable compared to most of Atari's other controllers.

$200 for a box? As in, a cardboard box with nothing inside it? PLEASE tell me you're joking.CF

Last Xmas, there was a stink where some guy was selling Xbox boxes on Ebay. Got a couple hundred for it, too. Obviously people not paying attention to what they're buying - but since he spelld it out in the conditions tht all you were getting was the box, he was absolved from any wrong doing. Slimy, yes, but not technically wrong.

You could ask the Engineer in charge of the 2800 about it (Joe Tilley) but he was shot dead by the San Jose Police in 1983 around 5:AM on highway 280. He was wandering around the freeway, in his underwear, when he lunged at the police that came up to him......oh yea, he had a butcher knife in his hand.

The San Jose Newspaper article the next day was taped to the engineering directors door (Dave Remson) that had fired him a year earlier from Atari. It mentioned how his marriage was falling apart and he was unable to find a job since let go at Atari.

The story of the 2800 (Cindy) was quite a mess from an engineering standpoint, a disaster from start to finish. This is one of the reasons very few ever were badged with the Atari logo and only the Sears commitment was met.

Before anybody asks, this is an absolutely true story :(

You always hear that "Truth is Stranger Than Fiction"... but this exemplifies it. Not even Steven King, in a codine induced haze, could make this one up. Very sad...
