What color screen do you get? are you getting steady +5 on the PSU, or does it fluctuate? As for the memory, there are some 65XE boards that have spaces for an extra bank of memory (in reality they are really 130XE boards)

mimo
It is probably the RAM that is faulty anyway. I would start with de-soldering/socketing/replacing All the RAM on the 130xe. Oh, the 65XE already has the FREDDY chip Edited September 7, 2009 by mimo

A couple of alternatives: The easiest and "Best" fix is to buy a new 130XE motherboard from Best Electronics. IF your keyboard and power supply are good, and you are happy with the cosmetics of your case and keyboard, then you can have a solid computer for fairly low cost. Brad was selling these for $70 + regular USPS shipping. I've bought several of these 130XE and 800XL boards ($40) and mine are pristine. Another choice is to contact MEtalGuy66 here at AA and see if he is willing to repair yours. From my experience, he is excellent at A8 repairs. -Larry
MEtalGuy66
Ok.. First of all.. If your 65XE does not have the FULL ECI interface on the back, then its not a 130xe motherboard.. Second, yeah you could upgrade it using old drams like the 130xe has, but youd be much better off doing something like Hias's SRAM upgrade, which is 512k ram, with full 130xe compatability, ALOT less soldering/desoldering.. Third, if you get a black screen like that, I doubt it's just the DRAM thats bad.. Based on the symtoms you describe, any number of things could be causing it.. You need someone who has experience "de-flaking" and "ressurecting" dead XEs to have an indepth look at it.. I dont know anyone in the New England area, but if your willing to mail it to houston & back, I'll fix it for you as cheap as possible.. puppetmark
does any one still do repairs on these in northeast us? If you don't want to try fixing it yourself, maybe I can help you out. Like many here, I have been repairing this stuff since the mid-eighties. I am in south eastern PA. PM me if interested. I am sure I can figure it out but I will say that no one here is better than MetalGuy at this stuff. It's just a matter of postage I suppose. Well I don't remember Jim but I do remember NEAT. I was a member of ABUG (Atari Berks Users Group) and I know we had communicatons with a bunch of other groups in the area like NEAT and LACE (Lehigh Atari Computer Enthusiast) I was also a co-sysop for the Excalibur BBS which also ran on an MIO and two 10 meg full height Seagate drives. useclipse
My name is Roger and I just recently bought the 130xe and I am having the same issue. I know this thread is a little old but I did notice some people live in SE Pennsylvania and wanted to know if anyone can take a look at mine or give a name and number of someone who may be able to help me with mine. I believe replacing the mainboard will fix the issue, I am not particularly good at soldering. I also have the 1050 disk drive but cannot test it yet since the computer is not working. useclipse
I tried the RF output and also the 5pin DIN to SCART/AV cable one and always have the same results, whether there are lines of colors, like static, all over the display or minor changes to the image, no blue screen, no sound. I even tried starting the computer pressing start + option to hear the beeping for the tape recorder and no beep. Or if I start it up pressing OPTION to see get to the self test menu,I was expecting so see some changes to the screen by doing this but no changes whatsover.
